The Charleston Place Hotel is upscale, but is so worth the splurge. It is somewhere you would go for a romantic getaway when you can leave the kids at home. It is central to downtown. The brunch is to die for and the rooms are decorated beautifully. There are many little shops right at the base of the hotel and you don't even have to use your car while you are here as everything is right there. A definate splurge on yourself, but worth every penny!

Thecarriage tours are a must for visitors and residents alike. Palmetto is the most child friendly carriage tour we have found. They have a petting zoo that all three of my children love. They also accept all competitors coupons and offers so this can make them one of the lowest priced around. The fact that they have parking for their customers is another bonus. My children's school uses Palmetto when they do a carriage ride fieldtrip. I am very impressed with this company!

Gibbes Museum of Art is a great museum with tons of exhibits. They have special family days where you can go in and do things for a very low cost. They have lots of special activities, too throughout the year. It's a great place to tour in a half day when you are in the historic part of Charleston and always fun for the kids. I highly recommend them!

Upon a recent visit back to Charleston, we decided to treat ourselves and stay at the Ansonborough Inn (instead of sleeping on Mom's couch). When we lived in Charleston, we lived just a few streets away from the Inn on Society STreet, so staying here was like being back at the old house.
Of course, this isn't a $45 a night type of place. Be prepared to shell out some cold, hard cash to stay here. But you know what? It's worth it. This is a nice little inn in a very unsuspecting part of town. You're close to the Market, to King & Meeting Streets but you're not in the hustle and bustle of central downtown Charleston.
The great thing about staying downtown is that everything is within walking distance (depending on how far you want to walk). It would take you maybe 30 minutes to get to Waterfront Park, 45 to get to The Battery---and these are leisurely paces as you pass by stunning architecture. Take a trip down a little alley. Getting lost in Charleston is half the fun (unless you're driving, then it's scary).
If you're looking for something more upscale and more intimate than the Best Western, give the Ansonborough Inn a try. Stay in a real neighborhood where real locals live.

My husband and I recently returned from a 5 night stay at the French Quarter Inn. It was just wonderful!! We arrived early and our room was not ready, so they suggested we have lunch and they would call us on our cell. We had just ordered when our cell phone rang. What a surprise! Everything was perfect: the complimentary breakfast in the lobby; champagne and ladyfingers at chech-in; wine and cheese at 5PM;; cookies and milk at 9PM. There's also coffee , ice tea and lemonade available all day. Our room was spacious and clean and even had a "pillow menu". The hotel is centrally located and you can walk to everything. Be sure to try Tristan's for dinner. It was great.
Pros: location, service, amenities
Cons: none

Two Meeting Street is one of the nicest Bed & Breakfast's in Charleston. They are located right on the Battery and are within walking distance of all the major attractions. The rooms are BEAUTIFUL... with some actually overlooking the park. We stayed in one of the rooms that had it's own private balcony and were able to enjoy our breakfast and afternoon tea with just the two of us. If someone is looking for a quiet romantic inn then this is the place to stay!

Since my two-night stay was a couple of months ago, one might surmise that this made a big impression on me. The hotel has porters with a chip on their shoulder. I'm prepared to give a tip, but if you expect help with baggage, see if you see it as well. In addition, the full breakfast was a laugh - it's time for an upgrade folks.
PROS: location
CONS: Hotel parking is $18, and across the street $12 per night

The rooms are modern and minimalist--very soothing and comfortable. The grounds are SO lovely, and there's a friendly "grounds cat" named Zoe who will follow you around demanding love. The staff are accomodating and the environment is utterly relaxing. A great place to go and truly get away from it all.
Pros: Quiet, Beautiful, Relaxing

More
The thing that makes Drayton Hall unusual and a must-see is that it survived the war in 1865 when other plantations around it were burned. It has never had the modern conveniences added like some of the others. You can walk the grounds after your tour. There is a lot of nature and wildlife here. You'll see all kinds of birds and animals, along with beautiful gardens. This is one of those places if you had to choose between several places this would be one of the ones to see while in the area.
