The South Carolina Aquarium is a great spot to spend an afternoon. It's small enough that you can do it all and yet fun at the same time. We had a family membership that just expired and we went dozens of times in the past year. They are very friendly to kid's and homeschoolers. Lot of educational projects can be done at your visit. They have a very unique touch tank where the kids can touch and pick up most everything in the tank. Volunteers are standing right there and keep the animals safe. They have a nice play area inside with a slide and ship to crawl into that is a new addition. Very nice way to spend the day. Parking is somewhat of a pain. You can park on the street if you find a spot but of course that takes change. Plan on at least a couple of dollars in loose change for the parking meter for your visit. Parking is available at the garage across the street but it ranges from $1 (for under one hour which is almost impossible) to $10 for the day. On a 2 or three hour visit we normally would spend $5 at the parking garage. So, be aware if you have never visited that you'll need to plan to pay for parking along with admission. Street parking is nearly impossible to get close and you'd have to keep feeding the meter if you stayed more than an hour or two. The aquarium itself is pricey but it's worth it . A family admission is very reasonable and inlcudes all your children under 18.
PROS: Great exhibits
CONS: Parking is a pain

I took my daughter to see Beauty and the Beast when it came out. I had never been to an Imax before this, but I heard that the screen was huge. So My Daughter and I decided to see this animated feature for our first IMAX visit and I was like "WOOOOOWWWW!!!!!" I was very impressed with the theater itself. Very clean and a courteous staff. Even though I have seen this movie before, it was like seeing again for the first time on the IMAX screen. I felt like I was actually IN the movie. It was great, I can't wait to go back!

Gibbes Museum of Art is a great museum with tons of exhibits. They have special family days where you can go in and do things for a very low cost. They have lots of special activities, too throughout the year. It's a great place to tour in a half day when you are in the historic part of Charleston and always fun for the kids. I highly recommend them!

Good space for intimate performances. I can't count the number of nights I lied to my mom and told her I was staying at a friend's house when in reality I was sneaking into The Music Farm to see bands like Cracker or Matthew Sweet play.
Small space, not too much room but that's okay. Who wants to feel like an anonymous face amongst 10,000 fans anyways? Here, you can stand around, drink some beer, run into old friends and actually SEE the performer without having to sit on someone's shoulders.
Check out their listings--alot of big-time performers come here. Great place to go if you have the opportunity.

More
The Charleston County Parks have three parks. Having a son who is 7 and not a strong swimmer, our favorite is James Island County Park's Splash Zone. They have a lazy river you can float in inner tubes on, a fun kids zone with buckets and fountains, sprayers, etc. , a pool and a place to sit down and eat. You can rent a locker for $3 or $5 to put your wallet, etc. in. Lifeguards are everywhere and it is a safe and family friendly atmosphere. No big rides at this one but fun for kids and teens, still. You can buy a yearly pass or pay as you go. After 3:00 pm admission is cheaper. You do have to pay $1 a person to get into the park gate (the entrance is at the County Park gate) so keep that in mind.

More
Magnolia Plantation and Gardens is our favorite plantation in the Hwy 61 area. They have the house, gardens, swamp, a petting zoo, playground and amazing gardens. You can rent bikes and canoes and spend the entire day having fun here with your family. The gardens are great and you can walk forever in them without feeling like you are looking at the same old same old. The petting zoo is our favorite as many of the animals walk around and you can pet them. Our favorites are the deer and all the bird type animals. The playground is an older one, but still is safe and functional and the kids definately need a break from viewing the gardens (at least mine do). The staff is friendly and the plantation is very child friendly compared to most plantations. You can also get a family membership for very cheap!

If you want to take a trip to Charleston, SC, and stay in a luxurious yet reasonable Bed & Breakfast, check out the Ashley Inn. Located a little way from downtown, yet still a short drive to the main Charleston attractions, Ashley Inn could be just what you are looking for. It is housed in a beautiful historic home and completely restored. It has several bedrooms, each with it's own private bath. They offer a full breakfast each morning and afternoon tea with light refreshments every day. The owners and proprietors are very knowledgeable about the Charleston area and can help you plan your trip with tips about attractions and restaurants. I got a wonderful dip recipe when we stayed that make often at home to great reviews. I definitely plan on returning to the Ashley Inn.
