In a world of hurt, thank goodness we still have Planet Records and its awesome selection. They put out the CD booklets sans jewel cases, which means you can look at twice as much merchandise in a small space. If you want to buy you bring the booklet to the desk and they'll fetch the CD. All sections are extensive especially R&B and foreign music, and they also sell new and sealed recordings. You can find some really unusual and esoteric recordings here and the staff is usually knowledgeable. If the place is quiet they'll even let you hear a little bit of a CD on the sound system, but don't try this on a Saturday. Buyback here is picky - give it a try, then take your discards to CD Spins. They also sell DVDs. Open until 10pm most nights, as it should be.

I always try to go to as many Newbury Comics stores as possible every time I visit Boston (that explains why I'm always broke!), and this is a great store. They always have a great selection of new and used CDs, as well as movies and other various trinkets and clothing. They usually have a decent selection of clearance items, as well. You're bound to find something good here. The prices are actually decent, and the employees are always really helpful.

This theater is one of a kind. Here they show really good old movies, the essential classic films. Last month was dedicated to Hitchcock (one of my personal favorites). Sometimes the dedicate a month to a great actor or great director and show their films. They also show independent films, which is a rare thing nowadays. Basically, I have never seen a bad movie here and I've been going for 3 years. Top notch.

Sure, Man Ray closed last summer, and we wept bitter, gothy tears. Where could the club kids dance to endless remixes of pop music? Where could the alienated swoop and dive to the Smiths and Peter Murphy? Where could the fetish crowd get publicly spanked (and get that discount at the door for wearing PVC)? The fetish crowd might still be waiting, but fans of Man Ray Saturdays can at least come to Toast now. The techno portion is gone, but the New Wave portion is here even if the crowd is a little more homogeneous. Toast is not as big or as daring as Man Ray but hopefully as the word gets out it'll pick up and the music will be even better. The bartenders are terrific here and there are red velvet couch/chair things to lounge upon and look tragic. Open until 2am; come shake your booty. Right on the 87 bus line, mostly permit parking only if you drive.

Cheapo is certainly that. They have way way way better prices than mainstream stores. For a CD that Virgin Records would charge 21 bucks for, you can buy the same damn thing at cheapo for 10. It is almost ridiculous. It is especially cheaper for independent labels which if you try to buy anywhere else will cost you twice as much. I am a big fan of not overpaying so I like this place.

More
The Sackler Museum is relatively small compared to other Boston museums, but well-worth the trip to Cambridge. It is easily accessible from the redline, although parking is almost non-existant. Changing exhibits, free to members of the Harvard community, reasonably priced for members of the public.
