The MCPL is one of the finest libraries I've ever been to. I began my first date here in one of the movie booths. It's so enormous, the staff are friendly and helpful. If you consider the population it's meant to serve and compare that to a lot of libraries across the US that serve much larger populations, you might just be amazed.

So when I was pregnant and someone from Healthy Families called me and asked if I would like to sign up once my baby was born. I was clueless as to what this program was about. I agreed to an initial visit mostly because they promised to bring gifts for my baby. No, I am not proud of this, but I hadn't had my baby shower yet. I still wasn't sold after that first meeting, it felt like I was being quizzed and tested. Boy, was I wrong. I blame the pregnancy hormones for my paranoia. I cannot tell you how valuable this program has been to me in the last 14 months. I count the 2 ladies who have visted me as not just friends but valuable resources for advice( the kind I actually want) and ideas. My baby adores these visits as do I. They were my only regular company for months. They don't ever tell you how to parent but they can tell you tips and facts andthings to help you gauge your child's development. Plus they hold group days every month. Sometimes they are like a field trip to somewhere cool like the Zoo or the pool, sometimes more of a playgroup. They are always free or almost free. It was 3 dollars to go to the Indianapolis Zoo, including admission, transportation, lunch, drinks, and sunscreen. I can't say enough good things about these guys.

I had a visit with Jan Harnett recently and I really liked her. I think she is a great alternative to the super busy doctor's at Aegis. She was really nice and put me at ease, which is so important at any gyno appointment. I found her to be professional and knowledgable. She seemed to really put more weight on my own observations about my problem, and I respected that. I think that's how it should be. She also wrote me a prescription for an antibiotic to have on hand if I need it. I have never had that happen before!

Dr Aronoff is probably my very favorite doctor ever. And I have been to more than a few. He used to be my gynecologist when I was a teenager. He made me as comfortable as possible for a first timer. I used to go see him for just about everything, even bronchitis. So forward 10 or 12 years and now he is with Aegis group. He handles any illness that's not pregnancy related for them. I couldn't believe it when he remembered me after all of those years. His nurse did also. He is such a nice guy. I was actually happy to have a respiratory infection just to catch up with him. Okay, maybe not, but he is still awesome.

The Crisis Pregnancy Center is a great resource for women or families who need a little help. They can help with clothing for babies and children, formula , diapers, wipes, food, juice, bottles, blankets and just about any other baby item you can think of. They are free in terms of real money, but they charge "baby bucks" for their items. You can earn baby bucks many ways like going to church, work, pre-natal appointments, parenting classes, or even for reading parenting articles. Basically anything that makes you a productive member of society or an engaged parent. They also have bigger items like strollers, highchairs, changing tables and cribs. I wish I had known about them when I was pregnant! I don't think that you really have to be in a serious crisis to go there, just have to need the services.

I went to see John Ebling when I was a teenager dealing with post traumatic stress disorder. He helped me so much. He is very easy to trust. He's very empathetic and comforting. He had me do writing exercise that really helped me more than I would have thought possible. He even wrote me a college recommendation.

I have volunteered for the Monroe County Democratic Party since I was in elementary school. I think I started doing it to get out of school, but i soon fell in love with the process, and the excitement and the teamwork that is shared. And of corse i fell in love with the party itself. Our local group is full of great people. They are passionate, intelligent and motivated. I am happy to have been associated with them over the years.

It's funny how you can live in a town for most of your life and not know that certain places even exist. I have recently met some people who work here and they have told me so many good things about it, that even though I have never been here myself, I feel like I should say some good things about it. So this is what I know...they feed people, meals on site and let people grocery shop from their pantry, provide diapers, clothes,a place to study, rides to appointments for those in need. I think they also have playgroups for parents and kids. I think it's great that there is such a valuable set of resources under one roof.
