I am a regular here! I eat here every week and I love it! The fish is very fresh and they have good service.

Worst

I've been here a handful of times, always thinking that maybe it will be better, but it has never been anything but dissapointing to me. I feel like it's extremely average, consid...

My sushi purist friends insist this is one of the best spots for it. I don't like seafood, so I stick to the Kobe beef which is delicious. Nice atmosphere. more

I would never go back to Katsu-Ya 12/13/2010

My husband and I took our son and wife to dinner to celebrate his birthday Saturday evening. We had a reservation at 5:30 p.m. We all arrived promptly. By the time we ordered our drinks and food, it was 5:55. We spent $264 including tip. Our check arrived and we paid it but were still talking and finishing our drinks. My tea was hot and I had 3/4 of a cup left. A waitress tapped my son on the back and said ""we need the table"". I looked around and there were other empty tables available. We were all stunned so we got up and left without addressing this matter with the manager. We were in the parking lot handing over the ticket to the valet (another $4.00) at 6:58 p.m. I have traveled to many countries around the world and have never had this happen to me. more

Not Your Average Chain 5/9/2010

If you only order one thing, please let it be the albacore with crispy onions. Between the seared tuna, crispy shallots and vinaigrette, you might just die and you would be completely OK with it. The tuna's sliced so beautifully that it simply melts in your mouth and leaves the faintest of tongue-teasing vinaigrette. Word to the wise: seating is on the limited side, so reservations are pretty much mandatory. But it’s worth it. more

A Sushi-Lover's Spot 3/2/2010

If you try Katsuya, you gotta come here. The Studio City original knows how its done. Parking can be a nightmare but once you're inside and you try some delicious rolls, it'll be worth it! Try: Spicy Tuna on Crispy Rice with Jalapeno Spicy Albacore with Crispy Onion Honey Roll baked crab hand-roll Everyone orders this, but that's because it's so good! The fish is fresh, clean and just melts in your mouth. They have such a great chef here! The service is a toss up sometimes - you may encounter moody hostess, but usually once the waitress takes over, they're much, much better! If you haven't gone, go and if you've gone to other Katsuya's - skip them and come here. Pros: Great sushi rolls, great drinks Cons: service can be slow, hostess may have attitude, parking more

The Buzz is True 1/20/2010

I called one afternoon and was easily able to get a reservation for 4 people that evening. The food was beyond good- probably the best eel avocado roll I have ever had. Since most of the items dont have prices, I was worried about the cost. But it came to $22 per person! Pros: Fresh, delicious, low cost, easy to get reservation more

Taking Strip Mall Sushi to a New Level 1/18/2010

Before there was Katsu-Ya Hollywood, there was Katsu-Ya Studio City. This original outpost for the, now trendy, chain is nothing like the other Phillipe Stark locations. It's not about the scene. It's about the food. But don't let the fact that it's ""strip mall sushi"" deter you. This place is often packed, and all those people can't be wrong. Getting a table can be just as difficult as it is at the Hollywood location. Putting in the time is worth it though because the sushi will be some of the best you've ever tasted. Pros: Fresh sushi and no ""scene"" Cons: Crowded more

Unprofessional, very crowded, Terrible manager/host 1/17/2010

I had read mixed reviews but decided to try it. It is not the romantic place I had expected. It was crowded, noisy and you literally could not get in the door or even to the front desk to let them know you had arrived, I had reservations. When finally I got to the front desk I discovered why. The male manager was hosting, taking payments, seating and answering the phone and patrons questions. It took 15 minutes to even be able to get to the front desk as he was unable to do these tasks and actually host or even take names. We ate and the service at the table was ok til the end. The place was super loud and there were children at half of the tables. It is a smallish place, open floor and tables are crowded in together. When we got to the end of the meal and wanted to take a green tea ice cream to go, my wife's favorite, we were told we could not. I asked why and they said they didn't do that. I was astounded and said you cannot or will not put a scoop of ice cream in a to go container? She had to check with the manager who came over after 10 minutes and said they had decided they didn't do that some time ago. I told him I thought it strange that they would not sell an extra dessert or accommodate their guests. He said they just don't want to do it. He said he would make an exception this ONE time but he did not want me to ask next time because he did not want to have an argument. I had not argued actually and the more I thought about how rude this was after I left, the hotter I got. I will never go back. There are so many good sushi spots in LA I find no reason to subject myself and my wife to this atmosphere and belittling treatment. Pros: Food was ok Cons: so crowded you cannot even get in the door more

Katsu-ya is always packed with its loyal following, but it's unquestionably worth the wait. The good-looking Valley crowd doesn't even mind putting up with Hollywood types...
