If one takes the time to notice, all Japanese fine art is essentially minimalistic. Be it poetry, music, calligraphy or food, the Japanese aesthetic involves a minimal structure, rigidly defined, where the subtlest deviation from the norm speaks tomes. The Art of Sushi is to approach impossibly high standards which can never be realized; a meal can be evaluated only by how close it comes to the theoretical perfection. Sushi is pickled rice, just sticky enough to barely hold itself together (if you are one to dip the rice in soy sauce, stop reading and buy at Von's), and sushi (rice) must be served immediately (yes, warm). As for rolls, the only rolls served traditionally at a BAR are tekka and kappa, unless the chef decides to serve you something to sample in a hand roll. That being said, Sushi Nozawa is church for eating raw fish. LA is a huge market for sashimi grade fish, tons of GREAT fish to choose from every day, but Nozawa-san gets to pick first. So if what you want is a roll filled with three kinds of seafood with five different pieces of fish wrapped around the outside, covered in sauce, DON'T EAT HERE. On the other hand, if you want to eat mindblowing fish in an environment designed not to distract your senses, this is the place to go. Jay Patterson
Pros: Nozawa-san knows how to pick a fish.....
Cons: Occasionally a customer who is looking for something else.

I walked into Shiki a year ago and was greeted like I was family. The sushi chefs are so friendly and genuine. Since that day, I eat at Shiki 3-4 times per week..sometimes twice a day! The fish is so fresh and surprisingly affordable! The portions are generous, so you don't spend a fortune. I've gotten all my friends addicted to this place. Some of them even come out from Santa Monica to eat at Shiki! Johnny, Eric, and Jay are the best sushi chefs ever! This place is my favorite restaurant hands down! I have a difficult time eating at other sushi spots...nothing can compare to Shiki!

Micheline Guide was right about them. Asanebo is a great restaurant. In my mind, they are one of the few restaurants in LA that have class. They are traditional but not pretentious in the way Nozawa is (I'm talking about their attitude, not the decor.) Asanebo chefs use fresh sozai (materials) and yet the prices are not so high as, let's say, old Ginza Sushiko. In terms of innovativeness, they try just about enough to surprise us but won't go into the degree of banality. I like Matsuhisa too, but I think you need to think of their food as totally different category from Japanese cuisine. And nothing wrong with that. But when you are really craving for Japanese food like I do sometimes (because I'm Japanese,) I'd go to Asanebo.
Pros: Food
Cons: Some dishes are better than the other, but isn't that the case with any restaurant?

Went here for a small casual family gathering of four. First time. Was not diappointed.. Interior was welcoming, tasteful and cozy. Service was very pleasant and helpful. Classic vindaloos, kormas, and tikka masalas were not as heavy and fresher tasting than many other indian places which tend to over-cook sauces. Spice intensity is to your preference. Fried rIce was perfect. Chicken was very tender, though just a few more actual pieces would have been welcome. Although weekday room was full by 7:45pm, it was pleasant and not noisy. Reservation recommended for dinner after 7:00pm.
Pros: Cozy neighborhood classic
Cons: Tiny parking area

I am always very picky about indian food, since I have heard horror stories. This is the one place I have returned to again and again, and every time I have gone I have been very pleased with the food. I've had vegetarian dishes and meat dishes. The appetizers are good but my favorite is the Chicken tikka masala. Best I've ever had by far. If you go in enough the waiters start to recognize you. They are very friendly and accomodating. I have never had a negative experience in this establishment and have been a patron for over 2 years.
Cons: Parking

I go once or twice a week and sit at the bar. Order a spicy tuna hand roll with avocado on soy paper, then order a baked crab hand roll on soy paper, then order the yellowtail. Next, try to remember three things you have eaten in a row in the past that could possibly compete!!!
I don't go on Monday's as Richard the sushi chef is not there. He is THE MAN when it comes to sushi!
Pros: Richard and great fish
Cons: a little costly but well worth it

We came here with some friends maybe two years ago or so and really liked it. Then we moved closer to where this is and have made it one of our regular spots. We just LOVE the food! Everything that we've had it so so good. And there seems to be two guys that are normally there that wait on us, and they are just as friendly as could be. There's no frills here, if that's what you are into. It's just really good food and a friendly staff.
Pros: food, servers
