The Sex Offender Went To Ironworks 7/7/2010

The registered sex offender has left the South SIde Athletic Club for good. He works at Ironworks now (they may have changed their name, I'm not sure). No worries potential members, your daughters are now safe from creepy pedophilia and can work out at the best gym on the South Side. The staff are extremely friendly and they go out of their way to make sure your experience at the gym is a positive one! Pros: Friendly staff and members, clean, locally owned more

A perfect gym for daily workouts 5/30/2009

This is the perfect gym for those who want to work out, exercise, and take classes without all the hassle and crowds of higher scale, social, pick up gyms. Plenty of well maintained equipment, free weights, a room full of cardio machines, and a room for classes, yoga, etc. The staff is friendly and helpful, very informed. The locker rooms (at least the guys') is adequate, clean showers and the gym provides a work out towel. I've been going since January and really enjoy the warm neighborhood atmosphere and access to a lot of equipment. A great deal for the price. Pros: Clean, helpful staff, good equipment, showers, lockers more

Not bad. 1/25/2009

Friendly staff. Plenty of weights. Minimal cardio equipment. Overall, not bad but I'm not planning to join. more

Basic, affordable, pleasant. 5/31/2007

I've been going to this gym for about 8 months now, so I figured I'd share my experiences. At first glance, as the editorial review points out, this place is pretty much ""no-frills."" That said, after shopping around, it made the most sense for me. It's convenient to where I work. I almost never have to wait for anything. The staff is very pleasant and responsive. People seem to be there to work out and not just to stand around flexing in the mirror, which is a big differentiator from several other local fitness places. They provide hand/sweat towels, but don't provide bath towels for the handful of customers that shower there; a mild annoyance since I'm one of them. The editorial review is low on the cardio machine counts (there are a few more now,) there ARE classes (but I haven't taken any,) and I happen to know there are some ""big-time execs"" who work out there, but you'd never know it because the overall tone is spot on; This gym does the basics, and does them well. As long as the full service gyms are twice the price and located inconveniently, SSAC will have my business. more

  • The Scene
The South Side Athletic Club is hip and styled with a funky amalgam of black, red, and gray. Its studio-apartment-esque interior is brand new and uncluttered--airy, in fact....
