Went to Sammy's in December, 2009 and really enjoyed the food and service. On Fri., 9/10/10, the family wanted to go out for a seafood/fish dinner and everyone agreed on Sammy's. ...

Warm And Inviting 1/19/2012

I went here for new years eve and was pleasantly surprised. Food was great. and the atmosphere was cozy and inviting. The large crackling fireplace was warm and inviting . I can't wait to return. It was a real surprise finding such a wonderful restaurant on City Island in the Bronx..I am so glad I watched the movie City Island with Andy Garcia otherwise I would never have thought to visit City Island. more

fantastic Raw Bar 1/18/2012

Always outstanding. The raw bar is a good as they get, supported by a great staff and very fresh seafood. I consistently rate the oysters, little necks as well as the Shrimp cocktail ""the best I've ever had"". I f you get there late, be prepared to wait. It's worth it. more

Lobster, Lobster, Lobster 1/18/2012

..\r I love lobster especially the way they prepare and serve it at Sammy's Fishbox. I really love their Lobster combination plates… I most enjoy the Whole lobster and baby back rib combo plate. I request a female lobster, because the tail has more meat than a male lobster. Then I ask that it be stuffed with crabmaet..wWow me getting hungry just thinking about it as I right this.\r Sammy's a great spot. I ALWAYS RUN ITO FAMILY AND FRIENDS WHEN I AM THERE…\r \r more

The only Seafood Restauarant i continually go back to 1/18/2012

When I moved to NYC a few years ago from Maine, Being a seafood lover, I tried at least 50 seafood restuarants in the five boro's and none of them warranted a return visit except Sammy's on City Island. My wife Julie and I go to Sammy's at least once a week religiously..The food is stupendous and the staff treat us like royality..especially Leslie and Steve ,,My favorite dish is the !/2 of 3lb lobster stuffed with crab meat..Julie always tries a new dish and is always delighted with her choice..\r I highly recommend a trip to Sammy's.. more

Bust 1/7/2012

What a bust!\r \r Do people actually go to this place?\r \r I have had plenty of very good dining experiences on City Island, and decided to try Sammy's during the off season.\r \r Do people go here because parking is convenient and it's easy to get a seat? I can't see why else you would.\r \r The service, while not terrible, was not very helpful. Our waiter could not answer many of the questions we had (are the chicken fingers real chicken or grounded, do you have Guinness). There was a language barrier.\r \r We were seated right away, which was nice...until we sat.\r \r The seats dip down like you're in a bucket seat of a nascar. I could not have been further away from the person across from me, which means we had to talk loudly. \r \r The seats are also very flimsy. The person seated in the booth behind me was drunk and moving around--making it feel similar to an earthquake. \r \r Drinks were next: Waiter said there was no sparking wine, so we went with Pinot Grigio (which we later found out was $9 dollars a glass and tasted awful).\r \r I don't mind spending $9 dollars a glass, but not for some awful place in the Bronx. \r \r I ordered a guinness, and was served a guinness extra stout. No biggie, I don't mind extra stout, but for someone who does, a heads-up would be nice.\r \r Soup was next. I went to City Island primarily for my hankering for lobster bisque. What I got was puzzling: A big bowl of what tasted and looked like velveeta chese, without much of a hint of lobster to be found.\r \r From that point on, the meal was pretty much ruined.\r \r The clams were O.K.\r \r The bill did not help matters. We came in just after 3 and they would not make anything off of the lunch menu, which makes a seafood dinner menu tough for kids and land-lovers. No sandwiches at all would be made, but they conveniently said they would do chicken fingers and fries.\r \r The chicken fingers and fries came out 20 dollars! Without telling us the price before hand or having it on the menu.\r \r Worst meal I've ever had. No doubt about it. STAY AWAY! more

World's Finest???? 7/29/2011

Honestly I must have ordered the wrong meal last night...got the lobster tail and filet mignon...the filet mignon was dry and flavorless, the lobster tail was a nice sized portion, good but not great. Fried calamari for appetizer was rubbery and lacked flavor; I've definitely had better. My diet coke with lemon honestly tasted like Windex with sugar. Worst of all was the cockaroach crawling above my right shoulder on the booth wall. The best part of my meal was the salad, the fresh bread and when we got the check (waste of $$$ but hey you live and learn). \r \r Now maybe I'm comparing apples to oranges, I've had melt in your mouth steak at places like Blackstone in Melville. I expected my steak to be better than what I had last night, which I would compare to frying up and eating a Timberland boot.\r \r A neon sign in front of the kitchen said ""World's Finest"". Really?? I don't think so.\r \r Definitely a thumbs down, am not returning here.\r \r *************************************************************I am back and HAD TO edit my review: BOTH my friend and I have been sick all day - they served a vegetable antipasto, which my friend said was ""piss warm"" served over ice. I don't know if it was that, or the water used to wash the salad - I had to take 4 teaspoons of Mylanta just to start feeling better!! At first I thought it was just me, but he suffered the same exact symptoms.\r \r Don't know if we just had a bad night, but with the roach (my wife was shocked that I didn't walk out the second I saw it, as I am suprised at myself as well), the fact it took a LONG time for our food to come out....as I write this my stomach is curdling and I am getting myself more upset. \r \r I am reading these reviews to my wife and she is starting to get sick. How anyone can give this place, generously speaking now, more than 3 stars, taking into account you have poor taste, is BEYOND me. This was a complete waste of our money, would not walk back into this sh**hole if you paid me. If I could give this place negative stars I would!!!! more

Had A Wonderful Meal and Time 7/28/2011

My uncle and I were making plans for my grandparent's and grandfather's birthday weekend celebration (May 16th and 18th). He mentioned to me about Sammy's last year because it had great seafood, but the prices were a bit steep. He and a group of friends went before and had food leftover because the portions were so big. It sounded so good, when he mentioned it again I thought it was a good idea. My grandparents very seldom go out to new places and this would be a good excuse. My mother and I surprised them that weekend and I told them where we were going. They too were excited to eat there. When we got there the place was packed from the door to the host stand. Let me say when I put our name on the list I didn't have to wait extremely long either. I was seated in less than 30 minutes (if that) and was greeted shortly there after by the floor manger (a nice woman who checked on us throughout the night). When I saw the menu I damn near choked. I couldn't get over so many options and I decided to go for Maryland crabackes (large and plentiful the whole table ate off of them), a small salad before the meal, pasta on the side, shrimp scampi and crab legs. LORD THAT WAS THE BEST SEAFOOD MEALL I HAD IN A LONG TIME!!!! Not only was the food hot and fresh, the crab legs came with a some type of coating on them, the shrimp scampi was done very well, and I had plenty to take back home with to Maryland. The rest of family dined on large meals as well. My grandfather ordered the Snapper stuffed with crabmeat and it looked scrumptious. What made the night so special was the complimentary two glasses of champagne for my grandparents anniversary and a slice of red velvet cake. My server, her name is Dorian (hope she is still there and someone sees this), was excellent. She stayed on top of everything and took our orders promptly and correctly. I recommend this place to anyone who wants good seafood more

Best Seafood Ever 3/14/2011

Was looking for a good seafood restaurant, some one recommened Sammy's, went there for a friend and mine birthday, It was outstanding, the service was good and even though the line was out the door and around the corner it did not take long to be seated, and the food, all I can say is go prepared to eat and have a good time. The portions was ridiculous and very tasty. If you are a seafood lover go here you can not go wrong. This is my new fav restaurant, this place makes red lobster look like mcdonalds. more

Sammy’s always has very fresh fish and giant Lobsters to die for. They also give complimentary salad and breads, cheese and more… giant portions of fantastic Seafood and tender juicy steaks at fair prices. I never leave without tomorrows dinner in my doggie bag… My family and I have loved going to Sammy‘s for more years than I care to say.\r more

My new favorite 10/26/2010

I was dragged to Sammy’s by a friend of mine who lives on City Island. All I could think was, ?Another Bronx restaurant?? I assumed the service would be bad and the food bland and boring?. I was so wrong!! Sammy’s is now my favorite seafood restaurant in the city. I had a 2lb female lobster, it was cooked to perfection; it literally melted in my mouth! My friend had the Rib-Eye steak (it was huge!) which was buttery and served with a giant baked potato. All I have to say about dessert is, get mile high chocolate cake. \r \r more

Culinary Heaven 10/18/2010

Sammy's presents a stylish, warm ambiance and a exciting culinary experience. I have been a regular since I first discovered the place last April. I been back at least 8 times since and every visit has been a 10. I've tried many different dishes...all great.\r Rge only draw back is the wait in the weekend, but once your seated a nd dine you'll find it was well worth the wait. more

Awesome food giant portions 10/9/2010

I love seafood especially lobster, so when I dine out I go to seafood restaurants. I tried them all in the big apple, but none compare with Sammy's Fishbox on City Island in the Bronx....yes the Bronx.\r If your like me and love great seafood, go and order a 3lb female lobster stuffed with shrimp.\r it will blow you away... more

A total Surprise 10/7/2010

This was my first time in the Bronx and my first time on City Island. My date suugested this place and to tell you the truth I was a little disappointed I had wanted to go into Manhattan for a great seaffood dinner. But was he right.\r This restaurant serves the best Lobster and steak I have ever eaten. The restauarant was beautiful and the fireplace was roaring. Its actually better than any seafood meal I ever had in the City.. I am looking forward to going back to try other dishes.... more

Yummy 10/5/2010

This is a terriffic restaurant. everything was a ten when we had my anniversity party there last week. They treated us like royality. I could not believe how yummy the food was. It was my first visit but I promise not my last.. buy the way be sure to try their Crab Feast ""WOW"" more

Belongs at the top of my list 10/4/2010

One block from the end of City Island you will find the best Seafood restaurant. One of the warmest and coziest restaurants I was ever in. The seafood is special. Fantastic service, every time. The cocktail menu is worthy of note -- very creative drinks of all varieties -- so tempting especially the Mojito’s it makes you want to try them all. \r The food is so good here; you may want to come back several times so that you can try them all. :) \r This is my favorite seafood restaurant, for all of the reasons mentioned above. \r The food and cocktails here are creative and fantastic, yes, but the ambiance is simply the best in the Bronx. A dining experience includes both food and ambiance, to my mind an unbeatable combination. I had a 3lb female lobster stuffed with crabmeat that was to die for\r \r Pros:decor, food, cocktails \r Cons: very busy\r more

This is Seafood Heaven 10/4/2010

If you looking for service you get at a 80 seat city Bistro then this isn't the place for you, but if your looking for a happening restaurant then Sammy's on City Island is the one. I was over whelmed by the size of my dishes and the quality off the food. I just don't know how they do it. I had a seafood meal that was far and away the best I ever had. I grew up in Boston the home of great New England seafood and can't think of a meall I had back than that comes close to my dinner at Sammy's this past saturday night...I can't wait to go back more
