Catfish, Too 11/1/2011

It was good tonight. I've had the peel 'n eat many times, which I always like. Tonight, I ordered breaded catfish on pasta with green chile alfredo. In this case, ""breaded"" meant with corn meal. That's how to do catfish. At so many places the cook uses too much salt. I was happy to discover the salt on the catfish was light. That way I could add to taste or just enjoy it as presented, and not hear my doctor's voice fussing in my head. Service was not rushed. If you go there once in a while, you know to plan for a liesurely experience. My lovely companion and I passed the time with pleasant conversation. We'll go again, I'm sure. more

a dash of the south in the desert, without the hospitality 8/21/2009

Ragin' Shrimp is settled in a cozy little building just a block off Central in Nob Hill. In addition to the quaint inside dining room it also has a number of tables on their enclosed, vine covered patio which is very nice during the summer. Unfortunately this place is very much a Hit'nMiss affair. When the food is good, its very good. Other times, its pretty average. There is a rather high turnover in staff here, (both waitstaff and cooks) so you never know what you're gonna get. It always seems like our waitress/waiter is working their first shift and has no idea what they are doing. Patience is definitely required. As far as the food goes, I usually get the Shrimp and Linguine with one of their delicious sauces, and Green Chile Alfredo is probably my favorite, though you cant go wrong with any of them. However, sometimes they serve you an ample amount to cover all your pasta, while other times there is only a couple spoonfulls. This is a regular source of my frustration with this place. With my salad I get the Spicy Cajun Ranch dressing, and it is excellent! This is, of course, assuming that they actually remember to bring the salad, which they don't always do. My wife gets the Blackened Catfish and that is another extremely inconsistent item. Sometimes its perfect, while other times it tastes like rubber, and then sometimes it's barely cooked at all. The place isnt cheap, and it wouldn't bother me to pay these prices if I knew it was going to be a pleasant dining experience every time. But you may as well flip a coin to see how thats gonna work out... If you're willing to take a chance you might have a very nice meal, just don't expect the same thing on your next visit... Pros: great sauces, nice patio Cons: inconsistent, bad service more

NOT a good value... 2/29/2008

I ordered some take out tonight and the food was horrid. Gumbo was full of chunks of onion, it borderlined a french onion soup. The jambalaya had 2 sausages, 2 pieces of chicken, and plenty of dried rice. Bread pudding was something that you would get at you rednekk cousin's trailer park home. All this for $30+ bucks. It was one of those diners that makes you wonder about the upcoming nightmares at night. Oh, one more thing, the portions just got very small. Pros: parking Cons: food is inconsistent more

Won't be going back 2/22/2008

I'm sorry to disagree with the other two reviewers but my husband and I went there for Valentine's Day and were sady dissappointed. The menu and prices sounded good on the internet but when we got there it wasn't a good meal. The prices were higher than posted on line which I know happens frequently at other restaurants but they really should keep this correct, however, the food was very bland. Our salads were fine, I had the cajun ranch dressing which was mildly spicy and was the best part of my meal, however, it took quite awhile to get the server's attention to get silverware after she delivered our salads. I ordered a half portion pork tenderloin with steamed vegetables and mild cajun sauce on the side. My husband ordered a half portion seafood delight over rice with same sauce on the side. My pork and vegetables tasted like there was no seasoning at all, no salt, no garlic, nothing; totally tasteless. My husband joked that he wanted to eat light which is why he ordered only a half-portion but he got about 1/2 cup of rice on his plate with ONE shrimp, ONE clam and TWO mussels. This didn't even amount to an appetizer! The mussels, when he could dig them out of the shell, were so rubbery he could barely chew them. We were still so hungry we ended up dipping all the french bread into the sauce, which, unfortunately, also had little flavor and tasted very greasy. Needless to say we won't be returning or recommending this to any of our friends. I was so dissappointed as I was so looking forward to a nice meal for Valentine's Day, 2008. Pros: Price Cons: quality and quantity of food more
