Great Place to Eat 9/6/2010

Like every place, some will hate it and others will love it. I have been going to Nantucket over 20 years and always look forward to it. I've taken my girlfriend, numerous acquaintances, my boss, parents - I like to think everyone should experience Nantucket. I like the jambalaya myself while my girlfriend prefers the calamari steak. Sure, service isn't always the best, food sometimes has to be sent back to warm up, but it isn't The Tides. My wine group has gone there often and we are treated very well, even being ""comped"" corkage - and there are minorities in the group - stop pulling the ""minority card"" every time something doesn't go your way of thinking - makes you look like a whiner. It's a family type place, cozy, great ambiance, reasonably priced. If you like wine with your meal, bring your own - this isn't the kind of place you're going to find Rombauer or Clos du Val, though they do have KJ Reserve Chard. I'd recommend Nantucket to anyone with the disclaimer it's a funky place with a little attitude. Lighten up, roll with the flow - or go to McDonald's for your fish. more

Absoutely Insulting 3/14/2010

I recently ate at nantucket at around 5pm? I was really 'fired' up on eating at this restaurant, because i heard that they had the 'best chowder in town', and since they are right off the bay, fresh seafood sounded really good. My father orders the clam chowder and some sourdough bread on the side, they put the sourdough on the table, and 30 mins later gets the chowder. Our fire time for our main course was about 30-40 mins (wasnt timing). Ok, i got to give them some credit we were a walk in ten top. I ordered the seared scallops. I paid twenty+ bucks on PREVIOUSLY frozen scallops (which werent even seared), they came in a little dish of what looks like a broken sauce but there was so much it was like soup, oh did i mention the undercooked steamed veg (man, steamed tastes good, what are we 70 years old?), The server didnt even know what kind of oysters they had, and they didnt even have any flavor. I suspect nothing in that restaurant is house made, except maybe the soups. Everything in that kitchen is probably Sysco bought. No one at our table was happy with their meal.... the only thing i ate on my plate was some of the rice, because i was starving. Probably better quality if you go to Mcdonalds Pros: Free bread? Cons: Everything else? more

Seafood, Tugboats, Railroad Tracks, Bridge Pillars & Local Color 1/4/2009

3.5 stars. Food is pretty good, certainly above average, and the prices are around $20 per dinner. Wine is OK for the price. Ambiance is unique and kinda fun. Employees and customers are friendly. Services is slow - food was so cold that it needed to be returned to the kitchen. Place is very unique and if close by it's a fun, casual evening every 10 weeks or so. I notice others rave about the seafood. It's above average but not remarkable. Zio Fraedo's just across the bridge in Vallejo has much better seafood and service for about $5 more per meal. Unfortunately the there were a number of low-lifes hanging around outside. Three drunk guys were getting in a fight and two drunk woman were egging them on while blocking the exit from the parking lot. Walking in or out of the restaurant you are engulfed with cigarette smoke. DO NOT rely upon Google maps to find the place; they have confused Dowrello Dr. (restaurant location) with Duperu Dr. which is residential. To get there take Pomona east, turn left on Port, stay on Port as it veers to the left at which point road becomes Dowrello. Pros: Unique and friendly Cons: Slow service more

THIS PLACE IS SMELLY, NASTY, OVERPRICED, AND FOOD AREN'T EVEN THAT GOOD 9/23/2008

This place is nasty. First of all the parking lot was awful. I was hesistant to eat there with my friends because I have heard a lot of negative things about this place but I went along anyway. When we got there we asked to be seated outside so we chose to sit close to the water...unfortunately there were bees that kept hanging around our area so we decided to move to another table. Our waitress was not happy about that so she became very rude telling us what we did was a no no. Anyway the whole experience was bad. It took a long time before our food arrived and when it did..it wasn't even that great . So stay away from this place....not only the service is bad but the food itself are way too expensive and they're not even that great. This is the worst restaurant I have ever been to. They do not treat their customers right especially if they're not white. more

well its was my anniversary and we called to see if we needed to make reservations more

We love this place but not for the food. This is rustic waterfront dining. 5/30/2008

You wont get five star food or service however the Nantucket is a five star experience. From finding your way there to rustic waterfront dining, it is a great adventure. I think the best time to go is during the day when it's sunny and not too windy so you can eat outside. It really does feels like walking into a different time-line when you go down there. It is true that the food isn't great but I've had friends who ate there every day while they were building that bridge and they're all still here. And I did have a very nasty waitress one time but personnel change and when you look at the big picture the restaurant and the location is unique enough to make the trip at least once. There's a gravel parking lot, train tracks to cross and a boat dock, so high heels are not recommended. Pros: waterfront, unique location and experience more

Great view, great location, bad food, expenisive food, bad service 5/22/2008

There is a great view and a charming setting but those are the only good things about this restraunt. The food is overpriced. My friend ordered fried calamari and received frozen calamari parts. It looked like fish sticks. When I asked about vegatarian entres the waitress acted like I was from mars. The dinning room staff constantly tried to take our plates away before we finihed dinning. Sorry Nantucket, I won't every be back and I will caution my friends. I feel cheated. more

Love Nantucket! 2/14/2008

My husband and I have been eating at Nantucket for over 10 years and have never had a bad meal. The atmosphere is a kick, as is the drive there AND the parking lot!! My guess regarding anyone who rates this restaurant below 3 stars is their head is somewhere unmentionable and they fail to see the authenticity of this wonderful restaurant. In fact, I'm writing this review with confidence BEFORE heading out to Nantucket for a Valentine lunch with my husband!! Keep up the good work Nantucket ;) Pros: Atmosphere Cons: n/a more

Leave your good shoes and home and come enjoy some great food! 11/13/2007

My husband and I love the Nantucket. We have been going there once a month for the past year or so. I always order one of the seafood specials and he usually gets something deep fried. I love the halibut dijonaise which is halibut with a delicious crust and cream sauce most dishes are served with fresh steamed veggies and your choice of potatoes or rice. Their au gratin potatoes are amazing! We have never been disappointed. I dont think the salad's are small at all, the plate is kinda small but, the salad is perfect. I do recommend upgrading to the spinach salad which is amazing. The clam chowder is great as well. The bartender, Bobbi, makes you feel like family and all of the wait staff are nice. As far as the parking lot, are you freaking joking me? A slasher movie? Please! God forbid you have to step on a rock or 2. Why would you order chicken and soup and salad at a seafood restaurant? Pros: very comfortable, never too long of a wait, delicious food and great drinks Cons: i guess the parking lot more

ive only been there a few times but its pretty good 7/27/2007

BEST SEAFOOD RESTAURANT IN THE EAST BAY!!! 4/6/2007

I read the other reviews and could not believe the negativity people had about this restaurant. Aside from the offbeat location that is not ideal to get to, once you get there it's a great restaurant. Nothing fancy but good quality food. Surprisingly the other reviews talk about the chicken and salad at this restaurant - come on people it is a seafood restaurant. The clam chowder is out of this world as are the main dishes. The calamari they have - both types - are my favorite! I have been to this restaurant at least a dozen times in the last 10 years and the food is consistently good. The service isn't 1st class but honestly, we're talking about crocket here, what do you expect. I've never had a negative experience with the wait staff but if you're looking for a warm smile and hug then this is not the place for you. If you're looking for great food then Nantucket is the place! more

I can honestly say..the worst restaurant i've ever been to in my life 2/27/2007

I reluctantly went to Nantucket for a birthday dinner. Seeing my friends was great but the rest of the experience was terrible. The highlight of the evening was the free bread they give you when you first sit down.... Period. But first off, when driving to this place late in the evening, I noticed how creepy and scary of a location it was situated in. I do realize it's a seafood restaurant and it is convenient that It is located right on the bay but driving in, I felt more like I was entering one of those scenes from a slasher movie. There is a minimal amount of lighting in the unpaved parking lot. You have to dodge mud puddles before crossing the scary train tracks and there is a strange pungent smell evading the building before you enter. The hostess at the door didn't look very happy with life and didn't give a nice jovial greeting as would be nice. Once we were seated, the server did approach promptly to take our drink orders and to bring the free bread, which as I mentioned earlier, was the best thing they had. I also decided to order a cocktail called the Kimmi drink, which I do highly recommend because it was quite tasty. When it came to dinner though, I decided to stick with the soup-salad combo since it was honestly the cheapest thing on the menu at $9.50. I had heard that there clam chowder was good but was not surprisingly, let down. This is due to the fact that it was about 80% clam chowder, 20% sand. I had never had such gritty clam chowder in my life and didn't even finish a 1/3 of it. Previous to this, they brought the salad which was even worse and the thing is..how can you screw up a salad? how? someow they succeeded in doing this exact thing. It was basically Italian dressing with a little bit of lettuce. I felt like my lettuce was swimming in the dressing. I could have had a better meal at Long John silver's and for 10 times cheaper.... never again...never again... Pros: free bread in the beginning Cons: bad food, bad value more

Bad Seafood, Bad Service, Bad Atmosphere 11/4/2006

Last Friday evening my boyfriend and I, along with another couple met at the Nantucket for dinner. We parked in the rocky, muddy, and dark parking lot than walked across the railroad tracks to the restaurants. This was my first time at this restaurant and when walking into the place I assumed by the looks of it, it had to be a dive bar where locals stop in for a cheap bit to eat, which was fine with me. I was shocked when I open the menu. For a place where half the main dishes, and almost all the appetizers, were deep fried, I was surprise to find the prices to be so high. The cheapest dinner was $16.95 for a chicken dish. Since it was a seafood restaurant, others in the group tried the fried oysters for an appetizer and said it was the worst oysters they had ever eaten. Thankfully, I got the chicken which was pretty tasty; however my boyfriend, fearful of the quality of the restaurants seafood dishes, also got a soupy chicken and noodle dish which tasted like it was came from Progresso soup can. Pros: maybe the location at the right time of day. Cons: the prices, the food, the service more

way over priced, very little service, 7/8/2006

We took our relatives there for dinner, very disappointing atmosphere. dirty floors with scraps of food allover. the food was not good swordfish on a bed of lettuce not a good combination. Pros: location Cons: noisy, food on floor, slow service more

Sun and surf and lunch... 5/29/2006

This restaurant is a favorite of locals and weekend bikers. It sits on the water at the Carquinez Straight where you can watch the ships go by and the fishermen come in. The wait-staff are not deferential, but they're not rude, either. The food is tasty and the atmosphere is all about the sun and what's going on the shipping lane. The deck seating is a wonderful place to spend a sunny afternoon with family -- children included! I have thoroughly enjoyed my experience there. As for the salads being small... well, I ordered steamed clams and my boyfriend the shrimp melt and both dishes were of adequate size and very tasty. I recommend the Nantucket for sunny afternoon lunches on the deck. Pros: Outdoor seating, Extensive menu, great Bloody Mary's more

buyer beware 1/8/2005

Arriving on a Saturday evening, the parking lot was dark, muddy and rocky. Once inside, it smelled of mold. Once seated, our waitress had very aggressive and rude demeaner. My husband ordered mahi-mahi at $17.95. It was about 2-3 ounces and looked like squid!! And taste like it too!! I decided to play it safe from the time of arrival and order the soup and salad at $9.50. The salad came a very small plate with a small portion. It had one slice of tomato and three chopped cubes of cucumber. I asked for a second serving and explained that it was a half of a serving of salad and was told that ONE was all I was getting. I must say, the clam chowder was very good. So unless you are craving a bowl of clam chowder, I recommend to stay away!!! Pros: clam chowder Cons: , odor, service more
