Nice surprise! 6/6/2011

On my way back to New Jersey, my family and I visited La Guli Pastry. The cannoli was wonderful and reminded me of my childhood Sunday dinners and desserts. The staff was friendly and very helpful. I highly recommend La Guli Pastry if you're in the area. more

Most yummmmmmy ever! 5/31/2011

We used to live in Manhattan and bought everything in the way of sweets at La Guli! There are a ton of places to go in NYC but this is worth the ride, car, train...whatever! The owners are amazing, and very proud of what they create fresh every day! Although we now live in Florida and only are in NY 3 times a year we make sure we get to La Guli every time. My husband and I crave the cannoli all the time and believe me there is no place down here that compares either! We will be up in the Summer and no doubt the kids will want the delicious ice more than once! Thank you for being wonderful! This world needs some sweetness and you defiantly serve it up! more

Home of Great Italian Treats 5/28/2011

I remember Sunday morning trips after Church to a neighborhood Italian bakery just like La Guli. The smells and the treats take me back. We would pick up some bread and pastries every Sunday because we were either having company or going to visit relatives. You walk in to La Guli and it takes you back. It's not just the great things to eat or the sweet smell of our favorite sweets, it""s the feeling of going back home!..........And thanks for the greatest and most creative cake I have ever had. more

La Guli Pastry Shop a Tradition in Queens 5/27/2011

I remember going to La Guli's as a child with my dad to get our 'Sunday' pastries. We would wait on line outside the store and as a few people would leave, they would let a few more in. Today, I carry on that tradition as there is no better Italian pasteries than you will find at this Astoria gem of a bakery. Summer time, enjoy their homemade gelato. For me there is always room for their great cookies. If you are celebrating an event, their cannoli cream cake with rum is as Italian as it gets - my absolute favorite cake in the world. Make the trip, it's well worth it. more

When in the area, you gotta go! Simply the best and freshest pastries, cakes and cookies. I love everything, I do have some favorites. Svogliatelle and the Cannoli are my favorites, but again, everything is great. I grew up in NY and visit as often as possible. So, whether you're visiting some friends and family and need to get some great pastries ot bring, or you just want them for yourself... this is it! Do not miss it. -Z more

Excellent - Not to be missed! 5/27/2011

Fantastic Italian pastry shop in Queens. I live in the Midwest, but travel to Manhattan regularly. As often as I can, I stop either to/from LaGuardia to pick up a few tasty bits. Great assortment of almost any treat you're looking for, and in a great neighborhood in Astoria. If you're traveling in or out of LaGuardia airport, stop by. You won't be dissapointed! more

Original owners are back ! ! I heard a rumor they deliver? 5/26/2011

I love Astoria... My parents have stories of getting La Guli's cannolli cake for every single family birthday party and that tradition continued through out my childhood. I also remember my parents taking my sisters and me for a drive to astoria on really hot summer nights to get their Italian Ices. They recently restored their store front with special Italian craftsmen to its original appearance back in the 1930's when it first opened....I have to bring my father to see if it is as he remembers it as a kid. I know the inside is pretty much the same.. I like that kind of old world feel ... a lot. As my wife says you get a feeling of nostalgia when you walk in and when you get a cake(I recommend cannoli of course) and taste it I literally have flash backs of the many happy times I had eating it as a child...it tastes exactly the same... we have tried other bakeries and no one even comes close... they mostly all cut corners... I know most use fake white rum!!!.... so we take the drive from long island. They changed ownership (6 to 7+-?) years ago and then quickly bought it back when the heard complaints that the new owners were not keeping up the tradition and quality they worked so hard for decades to maintain. Definitely worth a try to judge for yourself!!! more

GONE DOWNHILL in both Quality and Service 4/13/2010

I too, remember this place from back in the day and was glad to move back to within walking distance. Had heard from a couple of people that it had gone downhill but my nostalgia blinded me. Until today when I took one bite of my pignoli tart and it was OFF, i.e. tasted kinda stale. Btw I've been eating pignoli pastries since I was a kid - mostly from Terrizzi 'cause it was closer to where I lived. So one more bite to confirm and I went back into La Guli and told the (short dark-haired) girl behind the counter that it tasted stale to me and asked if I could change it for something else. She claimed the pignoli was from this morning, said, ""I don't know"" and just stood there giving me a face. WTF? After it dawned on me she wasn't going to help, I said, ""How about, Sorry you're not happy with your tart. What can I do?"" Then a portly old guy with glasses, I'm thinking the owner, started shushing me and chimed in with even more attitude, yelling and shoving my money back at me. COMPLETELY UNPROFESSIONAL!! Anything they have at La Gruesome you'll find by crossing 31st where there are two old-school bakeries St. Honore and Astoria Bakery II on the South side of Ditmars Blvd. PS a couple of the other reviews sounded suspiciously like plugs from the inside. Cons: Stale Pignoli Topped with RUDE worker and owner more

Astoria's Finest Desserts 8/5/2006

How long has this place been here? Long before my time, but long enough to establish a wonderful reputation for having some of the area's finest desserts. The service is great here and they package the desserts well. Pricewise aren't terrible but each dessert valued at $1-2 each can add up quickly when getting a large box full. Its a good spot to come to after a nice dinner along Ditmars. Pros: Desserts, Prices, Services more

Landmark Pastries 6/13/2005

Its that special type of local pastry shop that you get nostalgic about when youre traveling around the world. Always saying in my head I would love some Gulis right now. This is the place that should be landmark for what it truly is. It is your perfect little local pastry shop that has helped define Astoria along with its many fine restaurants. Pros: Value, Location, Taste more
