Will Never Go Back 5/28/2011

After the concert on the square last night (05-27-2011) myself and several friends decided to move over to Hemingways. 15 minutes after entering the bar we were thrown out by the owner. Why were we thrown out? #1 The waitress asked that I give her a credit card to hold a tab for the entire group. There were about 12 in my group. I refused. I was one of two designated drivers and was only drinking diet coke. I can pay for my drinks without a credit card. #2 One of our group had a very small cooler (zip up lunch sized. Which was empty) that he hadn't taken back to his car prior to entering the bar. #3 one of our group was finishing a beer that she had not purchased in the bar. #4 When we walked into the bar the majority of the group immediately went to dance. 3 of us sat down at a table. Because the entire group didn't place an order right away. The owner saw that as a problem. All of these things are very normal considering we had just walked away from the concert on the square. The owner demanded that we leave immediately. When we ask for an explanation. he refused to speak to us other than to say ""I have the police on the phone. Leave now"". Let me clarify the dynamics of the group. There were about 12 of us. Most of us are in our late 40's to early 50's. We are not a young and rowdy group. The plan was to continue socializing after the concert. We would have spent a great deal of money in the bar last night. There's a concert on the Square in Mareitta every month. If we had been treated decently by the owner of Hemingways. We probably would have returned each month after the concert. Because of the treatment we recieved last night, and the absurd reason for throwing us out. I will never go back to hemingways again. The best thing that could happen to the patrons of the Marietta Square, would be for this bar to go out of business. more

Enjoyed 5/12/2011

I've been here twice now. The first time I had a taco salad and a cup of clam chowder. The taco salad left a lot to be desired but the chowder was good. We did snag a patio table and I quite enjoyed the dining al fresco, even though I sort of felt like I was in a parking lot. I only ventured inside to use the restroom which I recall being a little scary. On my second visit, we also procured a table outside. It was a warm and balmy day so I decided I wanted a fruity drink and ordered a banana colada. And, it was darn good (if you like that sort of thing like I do). I chose to order the black bean burger this time and I got the house salad as my side. I have to say, the black bean burger was pretty darn good, too. It was cooked well (crispy outside) and came with the basic lettuce, tomato and onion. I added ketchup and mustard and I thought it was very good. My side salad was good, too - nothing too special but nice, crispy iceberg lettuce with tomatoes, cucumbers, other salad stuff and blue cheese dressing. I really enjoyed my meal this time. The service was good but our server was a little frazzled and chatty. Still, she was good overall. more

Always a good time 5/10/2011

Always a good time! Now, don't go to Hemingway's for a quiet romantic, evening, or if you want cloth napkins and fine china (they use plastic cups and silverware!). But do go if you want a fun time! Some friends and I all needed a fun night out, we had a FABULOUS, energetic, attentive waitress, good eats and loved the band Jessie's Girl. Great pub food! I had the Buffalo Chicken Sandwich, with fries, and shared some yummy potato skins with friend. My other friends had shrimp and the black bean soup. All were happy with their food and my sandwich was huge, I could not eat it all. more

Nice staff/ scenery 5/10/2011

Parking? huh? Where?.. I've been here a couple of times - the food is alright. I've only been for lunch. Looks like it may be really loud at night though. Nice staff, nice scenery. more

Stellar service 5/2/2011

I've only been in Hemingway's during off-peak hours, but the service was stellar both times, with friendly bar tenders and waitresses who stopped to chat for a minute but didn't hover either. more

Superior service 5/2/2011

Nearly 99% of all bar and grills are non-smoking. We smokers find people like you repulsive and annoying. So please go somewhere else. Hemingway's has been under the same ownership and management for 20yrs. and will be around long after you have passed, so get over it. Hemingway's has great food at a good value, superior service, and the best live entertainment in Marietta. more

Hope this helps! 4/26/2011

I've read a lot of bad reviews about this place and can honestly say I've never seen or heard the owner act this way. My wife and I go up there once every couple of weeks and the owner has been nothing but nice to us every time we see him. He doesn't know us by name, which I don't think I've ever told him my name, but is very courteous whenever we go. The food is good, it's bar food but it's good and priced well. I always get the cheeseburger and it's like $7.50. I hate to hear people had bad experiences there. Whenever we want to go out in Marietta, we always meet our friends there. I will say that the drinks are a little pricey. We've learned not to buy shots! We pretty much stick to the pitchers which are 11-12 bucks or so. I hope those that read the bad reviews will give it a shot. For every one bad indecent at a place, there's typically 10 good ones that nobody writes about. Anyway, I hope this helps! more

Best bar and grill in Marietta 4/26/2011

Most fun I've had in a long time 4/22/2011

Most fun I've had in a long time and the Burgers are the best. My girlfriend's salad was awesome too. Service was good and the live entertainment a little loud at first but was best I've heard in Marietta. The owner really knows what he's doing. Got to be the best Bar & Grill in Marietta, Ga. more

Rock the night away 4/22/2011

I have been to Buckhead, I've been to Midtown, I've even been to Vinings. However, every time I go to one of those places there is always a couple of things I can't stand, the distance and the price. If you're living on north side of Atlanta, up I-75 you should really stop by Marietta Square and give Hemingway's a try. On a weekend night you can find a fun up beat environment with a great cover band. Drinks are not overly priced and you get value for your money. They don't water the drinks down. Get there early grab a table, a few drinks, and rock the night away with your friends. more

POTENTIALLY VIOLENT OWNER! 4/10/2011

AVOID Hemingway's. We went today, for the first time, for a relaxing sunday lunch. I asked The owner, Dave, why my kids grilled cheese took 41 minutes to arrive. He told me that I should have expected that, but never why. When I went in to use the restroom, he gave me a dirty look and proceeded to come over and tell me to ""kiss my a _ _"", at which point he bent over and started slapping his backside. I told him his customer service was horrible and he decided that warranted telling me to ""F--- YOU"" and give me the finger repeatedly. I walked away to the bathroom, and when I was heading back outside to my table, he started yelling the same thing across the room while giving me the finger...for all to see. Very odd and potentially dangerous behavior. AVOID, AVOID, AVOID! more

Good Experiences 1/7/2011

Thanks for the heads up 11/17/2010

I have to say, once I read all the reviews and saw that there was only one that had something decent to say, I won't be going there, nor recommend anyone there, can you imagine if I did and they be treated like the other poor patrons! OMG. people should picket the place, and funny I was at a near by cayon restaraunt and had a great time with my date.\r \r Cavet Emptor! more

HORRIBLE! 11/2/2010

First off, I as well have no affiliation with any other bars or owners of any other establishments in the area. Nor have I ever been kicked out of Hemingways. But I have witnessed Dave, the new/old owner, treat multiple guests horribly on multiple occasions. I STOPPED WASTING MY TIME AFTER THE 4TH INCIDENT! Never once was I offended by anything anyone had ever said or done before they were unnecessarily tossed out of the bar, and Im sure plenty of people feel the same way I do. Just look at all the horrible reviews w/in less than one year of him taking back over. I have seen Dave curse relentlessly at patrons for saying or doing little-to-nothing. He is a sorry, disgusting, negative, disgrace of a human being and I can't wait for someone to buy him back out so I can once again enjoy my time at what used to be a wonderful and laid back place to hang out. Seriously folks, don't waist your time, energy or money on this lame attempt at a ""better hemingways"". And Dave, I can't wait to hear your ridiculous attempt of a comment/defensive ramble on this one. Oh and BTW, your booze IS far overpriced. When a ton of people are saying the same exact things, maybe you should accept that there is without doubt a problem there. more

Beware Of The Owner! 10/28/2010

This was my first visit to Hemingway's. We went to meet some friends, sing some karaoke and have a good time. Everything was going really well, we were having a good time. The beer was cold, Thad the KJ was doing a great job. \r I'm in the entertainment business (DJ/KJ) and I usually make sure to introduce myself & give a card to the owners of any establishment we visit. I was trying to tell Dave (the owner) ""I had a good time, you've got a nice place."" when he cut me off and asked ""Did you bring these people here?"" He then started rambling on about one of my friends complaining about the price of his drinks. (I didn't know what he was talking about.) He started yelling that we must hang out in dives, your friends are ""TRASH"", you're ""TRASH"", all of you are ""TRASH"" and he ripped up my business card and tossed it on the table. Needless to say, this all caught me off guard and it also made me very mad. We ended up exchanging some words and I was told to get out, which I was going to do anyway and \r I WON'T BE GOING BACK!\r Until the drunk owner started insulting me, I was having a good time. I didn't eat so I don't know about the food. As I said the waitress & the KJ were very friendly and took care of me, no complaints there.\r If you go to Hemingway's, ""BEWARE OF THE OWNER!"" \r more

Hemingway's - The WORST in Metro Atlanta! 10/27/2010

This is the worst managed bar in Metro Atlanta! The owner, Dave, has zero personality, zero customer service skills and charges - (no joke) $7.50 for about 4 oz of drink in a plastic cup! We were there to join other friends for karaoke. The place is on the square in Marietta - Hemingways. It's horrible on a number of levels!!\r \r We had dinner, which was kinda blah, not ""Carribean cuisine"" at all. Not an atmosphere of fun, but the karaoke was okay. So the Mrs. questions the waitress about the drinks - $7,50 for a tiny plastic cup, overfilled with ice. She calls the manager over and he offers to put TWO shots into that four oz, cup if she'll buy another one. She lets him know that the drink prices are a ripoff for the large amount of ice in a four oz cup. He says that he'll ""buy her a drink"" when she says that she'll never come back to a place that has such bad prices. We thought that was it. It wasn't\r \r \r \r After we left, he told the rest of our party to get the hell out because we had questioned his drink prices. Furthermore, he repeatedly called us ""trash"" for doing so. He had choice words for our friends because they sat at the same table with us - the ""trash"". I left out those choice words because I'd like for everybody who goes out on the town to see this review of this establishment.\r I went on several sites for reviews and saw that this is a common occurence at Hemingways!\r \r So - If you feel like getting cussed out after being ripped off, I know just the place for you to go!\r more

A Welcome Return 9/5/2010

It has been a while since I have been here mostly due to the former manger who could not manger anything mor complex this his own breathing. Sin the owner has taken control back this place is a must when you are in Marrieta square. more

Absolutely Terrible 9/5/2010

If I could give lower than 1 star I would - please don't make the mistake of going to this place. The food is horrendous and completely overpriced. Unless you're looking for the worst experience on the square, to receive rude treatment, slow service and eat horrible deep fried food, I would suggest going elsewhere. more

Worst rip off on the Square 9/5/2010

The food is so bad Denny's would be ashamed to serve it, the staff are slow and not very helpful and the drinks are ridiculously expensive, I ordered a top shelf margarita it was $15.00, now I have had fantastic margaritas that were worth that but what I got was a lot of bar mix on ice in a plastic cup decorated with a brown lime that had to be a week old. The only thing that came to the table that was edible were the french fries and they were straight out of a freezer. The place mayhave been painted and cleaned but it's still rubbish. more

Don't Waste Your Hard-Earned Money Here! 8/13/2010

Looking up reviews for this place online led me first to Urbanspoon online where I saw the following response to a customer review complaining about the cigarette smoke: \r \r ""To Joe Jenkins \r by DMM (5 reviews) July 28, 2010 \r Nearly 99% of all bar and grills are non-smoking. We smokers find people like you repulsive and annoying. So please go somewhere else. Hemingway's has been under the same ownership and management for 20yrs. and will be around long after you have passed, so get over it. Hemingway's has great food at a good value, superior service, and the best live entertainment in Marietta."" \r \r The owner's name is Dave Mendelson (DMM), and the fact he would treat his customers - not to mention any potential customers reading reviews - in such a contemptable manner is deplorable. I just can't believe it! Furthermore, he just bought the business back from the previous owner this year, so he's lying when he says it's been under the same ownership or managment for 20 years. \r \r I've only been back once this year, but after reading the above, I will never, NEVER set foot in Hemingway's again!! more
