David and everyone else at the shop is friendly from the minute you walk in the door. Instead of a glamorous showroom, they wow you with their knowledge and expertise. As a result, you do not pay for the retail markup that you would at other stores. We gave a description, with sample pictures, of the wedding band we wanted, and then David gave suggestions on what he would do to improve on our description. Needless to say, the final product was perfect and we would not have wanted it any other way. The band complemented the engagement ring so well that one would think the rings are a matching set. My only regret is that I didn’t purchase the engagement ring through David as well. David is upfront with costs, and makes sure that the customer experience is first-class from start to finish. I've known Dave for a few years now and met him and his family through another friend. I'm so glad that we were introduced to the Helfer's. Not only are they a terrific family, but their business far exceeds any other jewler in the Pittsburgh area. Before I met Dave, my husband had gotten my engagement ring at a mall jewlery store. I loved it, and still do. However, the shape of the ring is different than others that I had seen. When I looked into getting a custom wedding ring made through other jewlers in the area, it was REALLY expensive. When my husband and I went back to the store where he purchased my ring to look for wedding bands, they had nothing that fit into the ring perfectly and I would have to wear my two rings with a gap in-between them. I couldn't believe that they didn't sell a ring that would fit it. To make a long story short, a friend of mine gave me Dave's card, and we went to him for our wedding bands. Not only did he make me a ring that I wanted (that I couldn't get anywhere else), but he also made me a ""spacer ring"" to fit between my engagement ring and my wedding ring to make a perfect wedding set. The price that we paid was far cheaper than any other quote that I had gotten from other jewlers and I get compliments on my rings ALL of the time. I have since then had many other pieces of jewlery made and they have turned out to be PERFECT and just what I wanted!! Had several older pieces of jewelry reset into more modern settings..all of the pieces were absolutely beautiful! Plus the best part is they will buy back the old gold which they put against the bill. Have received numerous compliments on the reset items. I needed to have my fiance's platinum engagement ring resized. Jewlers said it would be a week or more. some said it was difficult. I heard from a friend about David. They said he was the best. What they failed to tell me is not only could he do my ring in a day and have it looking better then when I bought it, but he was extremely nice, and really helpful. I also order platinum wedding bands from him and he was the most affordable as well. I would never go anywhere else. He is the real deal. Pros: Fantastic quality, great customer service. more

My mom gave me her original engagement ring, and once we got engaged, we wanted to get the stone reset. We got recommendations for several different jewelers, and had planned on shopping around--but after 15 minutes at Helfer Jewelry, we knew we didn't have to look anywhere else. Their shop doesn't look like anyone else's--there are no shiny display cases of glittering jewels. Instead, it's a workshop, with the jewelers working away on their current projects. Everyone there was so personable, knowledgeable, and helpful that we had complete confidence in them from the very beginning. And to top it all off, they quoted us a great price (which they later adjusted DOWN slightly--how often does that happen?!) \r \r They took the design I brought with me, made a few small suggestions on how to improve the design, and then went to work. Start to finish, it took three weeks--and the end result was *gorgeous*. \r \r After wearing the ring for a day, I realized that it wasn't exactly what I had in mind after all (through no fault of their own--there was a design detail that I hadn't even registered mentally, much less shared with them!). Even though it was my fault, not theirs, they told me to bring the ring back in. David was able to make the adjustments I wanted without having to start over from scratch--I had the ring back in a matter of days, and it was exactly what I had wanted. I had been so upset with myself for overlooking that design detail, and for not having given them all the information they needed from the start--but they took it all in stride, and made everything better. AND they did it with a smile.\r \r Not only do they do work of the highest quality, but their customer service is outstanding. Dana and I have been very good friends for years and it is awesome to have my own personal jeweler design,clean , repair anytime and they are the best in the burgh. Pretty much every holiday my fiance calls Dana, tells her what he wants to spend and she just picks something out and I love it everytime. Also once you get anything from them they clean it like its brand new, and check all your stones anytime you want. Its all family and they usually have the best deals. My sister saw a wedding band at a big jewelry store so I called Dana got her a picture, she not only had the ring made for $200.00 less but the diamonds were way nicer too. Ive got everything from my engagement ring to silver earrings to a custom nameplate made. They are by far the best, and family oriented. more

Ive been going to Helfers for years now and adore the Helfer family. Dana has designed many pieces for me which I wear every day. I had my diamonds reset and gold melted down for such a reasonable price. She showed me waxes and then drew a design, I came back back and looked at a wax of the design she drew and in another two weeks I had a beautiful ring. I went and had several other designs done by Dana and her family after that and they are always so friendly and nake me feel so comfortable and is now a friend of mine and other family members Ive sent down over the years. They also fix and clean all my jewelry, I would and have recomend them to anyone. more

My husband and I went to Helfer's to have our diamond rings re-set after 27 years of marriage. We heard of this business through friends and gave it a try. It was excellent. Dana personally helped us choose which rings we wanted, and she was so patient and personable. She was so experienced and personally helped me design the ring I wanted. When we went to get the rings, we were very please with the result, and we both love them. We would highly recommend Helfer's to anyone, it was a great experience. more

My fiance and I bought our rings backwards starting with the bands then started looking for an engagement ring for me. I wanted the ring to match my band and all of the rings I tried on at regular jewelry stores just didn't look right. I went to the Clark building into all the stores but wasn't sure what to expect from Helfer's since there was nothing on display. Dana greeted me and asked how she could help. Once I told her what I was looking for she immediately started calculating and giving me quotes for different options and showed me catalog pictures to help get ideas. When I came back with my fiance the start the process David made suggestions that would improve the ring (so glad he did) but was not pushy about changing my mind. They made a mold of my ring so they could match it exactly. The whole process was very quick....maybe three to four weeks. When I went in to pick up the ring David had me try it on to make sure that I liked it (and I did). It was a tad too small so I had to go back to get it resized. When I brought it back David was so honest and kind enough to say that he was not satisfied with the work they had done and that he wanted to remake the ring at no cost so he could be sure that we were also satisfied. When I picked up the ring the second time around it was even better than I could have imagined. It looks like the ring could have been in the store together as a set with my band. Dana printed out an appraisal form on the spot for me to take to my insurance company. Every time I go back they give me the feeling that I am not just another customer but that they value my business. We have already planned on the next piece of jewelry we are getting made there and would recommend Helfer Jewelry to anyone looking for a one of a kind quality piece of custom jewelry. Amazingly enough I was reccomended to the Helfer's through a family friend and still have yet to thank them personally because everything was done professionally over the phone and via e mail. With little in mind going into the ring design we were able to come up with the perfect pave split shank ring and oval diamond that raised up a little bit. \r The quality of the band and the diamond are far superior to anything i've looked at locally and I would trust the Helfers with any future business. \r Not only did my fiance LOVE the ring but all of her friends loved it too, which of course is an added bonus!!!\r I'll soon be in touch to order the bands.\r Many thanks to Ira and the Helfers.\r \r Cheers! more

Recently, my girlfriend and I were beginning to look at engagement rings. After seeing the reviews here on CitySearch, we decided to give Helfer Jewerly a try, and are we ever glad that we did.\r \r Walking into the shop, it becomes apparent that this isn't your run-of-the-mill jewelry store. We were greeted by David, who asked us what he could help us with. We explained that we were just beginning to look, and he took about 20 minutes to explain exactly what we should be looking for when it came to picking out the right stone. He not only had a great amount of verbal knowledge, but also had pamphlets that explained the different aspects of diamonds.\r \r Again, there were no rings being displayed at the store, but David was able to easily show us a ring that they had just completed. You could see right away that the level of craftsmanship was outstanding. He then showed us a few catalogs of different style rings, and actually told us to go out and visit other jewelry stores to get an idea of what we would like to see, compare prices, etc. We found an antique ring online and sent the pictures of it to David, and he assured us that they would be able to make it for us, no problem. We made another appointment to select which diamond we'd be happiest with, and during this meeting, David never once tried to ""push"" us to buy something more expensive. They were incredibly willing to work with what our limits confined us to.\r \r They were extremely considerate, very easy to work with, and produced an incredibly beautiful piece of jewelry. We will definitely continue to give Helfer Jewelry our business, and I would suggest that anybody else in Pittsburgh do the same. more

Ira has to be the best jewler in Pittsburgh, I was suggest to him from two different people and went to him for an engagement ring. The first thing he did was give me a 30 minute lesson on how to look into a diamond and analyze it under magnification. Then he showed me a bunch of diamonds and let me look at the ratings and compare. Then I got prices and he had me go out to other Jewlers and compare prices and diamonds and then come back that way I was a educated customer. When I came back he spent hours showing me many many diamonds and after about 3 sessions of looking at diamond, I found the perfect one and can't be happier. Everyone comments how nice it is. One day I decided I was going to ask my girlfriend to marry me. I talked to my mother about it. She told me that if I was going to buy a ring I needed to go to this guy a friend of hers knew in the city. His name was Ira Helfer. She gave me her engagemant ring and a few other rings she had. I made an appointment and went to see Ira. I wanted a bigger diamond. Ira looked at my mothers diamond and told me that it was flawless, was cut long ago and was far more valuable than the stones on the market at the time. He had an artist cut a wax of the setting I described. He cast the ring, set the stones, and the finished product was perfect!! Cost??? $174!!!! Every time we go to see Ira he strips us of our jewery and scrubs it clean. Thank you Ira!!! One time they got a shipment of diamonds and they poured them out in my wifes hand. She almost crapped!! I had the Helfers custom-make an engagement ring, and I am very pleased. I was immediately impressed when I spoke to Ira on the phone and found him to be the most helpful of any jeweler I had contacted. I am very particular, but they were very patient with me. We loved that the business is actually a workshop: There are no display cases, just catalogs and people to talk to. You can see straight into the work area, and you speak with actual knowledgable jewelers, not just clueless suck-up salespeople. I plan to have them make our wedding bands, and I will be sure to use them for all custom and repair needs in the future. Also, the prices were very reasonable. Great Jewelry. Custom made. Good location. Great Staff...Ira, David and Dana. The kindest people I have ever met. They will sit with you and ask WHAT you want, not what they want to sell you.
