Fosselman's Ice Cream-- Diggity-dank-jizzmania 7/18/2010

So, how to describe Fosselman's Ice Cream Co. than good, blissful, or heavenly? ""Diggity-dank-jizzmania,"" is a term my friend E.J. used when trying their exotic lychee flavor. Hmm, yes! Fosselman's ice cream is diggity-dank-jizzmania after all! Ice cream is difficult to describe because the differences between brands can be subtle. Additionally, people rarely have bad experiences, although once I had some random specialty ice cream from Rite Aid that compared to toothpaste. I suspect they combined all the lingering leftovers into a blend of crap-- but I digress. Certainly there is no toothpaste flavor among their 48+ choices at Fosselman's, as their creamy handmade ice cream has been a local favorite since 1919. Fosselman's is an old-fashioned ice cream parlor with a charming interior old-school decor that has a wide variety of special and seasonal flavors. It's a place where people can have old-fashioned fun merely sitting around with the sounds of chatter and laughter buzzing around. Smiles can be seen from every table and even from those eagerly waiting for the chance to order the tasteful substance that seems to bring everyone together. And by everyone, I mean everyone. Fossleman's brings together a diverse customer base; not only ethnically diverse, but also diverse in age. From children that have the ice-cream parlor going experience as the high points of their young life, to several grown working men happily loitering indoors with cone and ice cream in hand at the end of a busy week. Fosselman's has a special characteristic that unites generations together. Or it could just be the ice cream that does the trick. This has to the busiest ice cream shop on a Friday night since the queue was out nearly out the door. By the time it was my turn to order, I could not decide because of the large selection of choices such as Taro, Horchata, Green Tea, Macapuno, Spumoni, and many, many other uncommon flavors. The server was uncertain the most popular item after trying to probe him with questions, so after trying several samples, I decided on single scoop of Fresh Peach ice cream with a sugar cone which happens to be one of the unique seasonal flavors. The portions were quite generous for $2.50. It was light, creamy, and of course peachy! It was not overwhelming sweet with a subtle tart aftertaste. It had a very smooth texture that was not fluffy or thick. The Fresh Peach, like most of the other flavors at Fosselman's, does not leave thick phlegm in the back of your throat as it somehow retains the right balance. One scoop of ice cream and the company of old friends were perfect for a warm summer night. It was, should I say, diggity-dank-jizzmania? Fosselman's has other options such as sundaes, floats, sherbets, sorbets, frozen yogurt, and even ice cream cakes! I've heard good things about them all, and some day I will give them a try. If one wants to avoid the terrors of their small parking lot, their homemade ice cream in pints or gallon tubs to enjoy in the comfort of home, which is actually what my sister does sometimes. more

Disappointed First-Timer 11/28/2008

I watched Huell Howser and heard other glowing reviews of this place, (I thought worth making the trek from Glendale) but was thoroughly disappointed. I tried my regular favorite flavor - CHOCOLATE CHIP - and found Fossleman's absolutely tasteless. I struggled to taste any vanilla. I hoped for a thick and rich texture, but this was no better than a supermarket brand. more

Try The French Vanilla! 6/23/2007

I got the french vanilla on a whim and it was the best french vanilla ice cream I have ever had. No kidding. It somehow tasted a little like root beer! I might be crazy- but it's worth tasting to find out for yourself anyway. So good!! Pros: Yummy Ice Cream!! more

Owner will yell at you 5/17/2007

A few of my friends and I used to go to Fosselman's at least once a week. One of us, however, had a gift certificate for a half gallon of ice cream, so we decided to get a few of us together to go. We bought the ice cream and asked for some bowls. The OWNER of this establishment gave us a hard time about asking for free bowls, but we paid for the bowls and I even tipped him $0.40 or so. We then sat down to start eating ice cream, and in front of about 15 other people, he started yelling at us telling us that we couldn't eat in the store. The case evidently said ""To go"" somewhere, and why would he EVER let us buy a gallon and eat in his store. He can't charge 2.30 for an ice cream cone if everyone buys gallons. Pros: good ice cream Cons: horrible customer service more

Great family ice cream parlor 11/5/2006

This place is a family owned ice cream parlor that brings the good ole times back to life. It's small but comfortable and customer service is awesome. You can look at the historical pictures of the company on the walls and read about various articles. Ice cream is made inside the building and tastes GREAT! They offer tubs of any flavor that they sell. Pros: Home made ice cream, booth seating, relaxed and homely atmosphere Cons: small parking lot, too many great choices to choose from more

Some of the BEST ice cream in LA 9/11/2006

Last time I went I had banana praline and classic strawberry. Both were authentically flavored without too much sickly sweet sugar and rich and creamy without that Ben and Jerry's comatose after-effect. The lines can be long, but the fun array of candies and topping available at the counter are well worth it. Skip the cold stone, this place is an institution for a reason. Pros: ICE CREAM, Other toppings, Ambience Cons: Long lines more

Places like this don't exist anymore... 8/27/2006

If you're not familiar with this place, I highly suggest you check it out. They still make make ice cream there the old fashioned way. Not much has changed since they opened back in 1919 and have stayed true to their recipes. Friendly service and very reasonable prices. Best of all, great ice cream that rivals Haagen Daz!! Pros: Delicious ice cream Cons: only once location more

Awesome Ice Cream for Years 6/2/2006

I lived in South Pasadena for 16 years and I absolutley LOVED going to Fosselmans! I miss the great flavor of the ice cream and the ambience of the whole place. I try to stop when I am in the area and have a cone. Great place! more

Taro, lychee, red bean & green tea, too 2/3/2006

I add my enthusiastic support to the other reviews here, but another distinguishing aspect of Fosselman's is it's acknowledgement of being located in a very Asian neighborhood. And, to that end they have flavors like red bean (although I grew up w/ it, I'm not wild about it in ice cream), lychee (tasty), green tea (good, too) and taro (odd, but my favorite)! Oh, and I love the dark chocolate and peppermint, too. Pros: ice cream, interesting flavors, easy parking Cons: service inconsistent more

Sweet Ice Cream 1/10/2006

I like they ice cream b/c is very creamy & smooth, but a bit too sweet for my taste. The sherbet is great, but also a bit too sweet for me. Then again, where can I find a cold treat that is tasty but ultra-light on the sugar. Now that is a challenge! more
