Damico's Place

We ate at Damico's last night and it was one of the worst meals of my life. The soup and salad was fine but the liguini with clam sauce was horrible. The pasta was one lump of congealed cold nastiness and the clam sauce was so over salted I felt like it burned my tongue. Such a shame. I loved the atmosphere but the entree was inedible. Not one of my friends at the table took home the leftovers; I hope the owners got the message. more

Great food, Gayle the waitress is outstanding, courteous and attentive, and friendly, but the owners are curmedgeons, no social skills and are standoffish or is it just me? I have been going to D'Amico's for a dozen years or so. I have taken quite a few guests there and have gone with my workmates. Not once in all the times I've gone with other people have I heard anyone say they wouldn't go back. As a matter of fact, they did go back repeatedly. Sometimes without me! Despites the Italian name of the place boldly displayed in large fonts at the entrance, maybe hinting at some authentic corner of Pittsburgh's Little Italy, its food is something even a modest canteen would be seriously ashamed of. Absolutely terrible! The bruschettas were a joke: the bread had not even been toasted! The pastas were much worse than that: no idea about cooking times, plus the sauce was probably drawn from some cheap can and heated up as is. My goodness! more

I just read the two negative reviews on here of D'Amico's and I had to laugh because these two wet dishrags clearly don't know what to expect from Pittsburgh's Little Italy. This is not the town of pretentious wine lists and putrid concoctions of high-end veggies with long tedious stories of how a recipe was saved and passed down from the old country . This is Pittsburgh where the attention is on comfort and carbohydrates. I love D'Amico's, my fave Italian Restaurant in Bloomfield. The waitstaff is super-friendly and down to earth, and the food delivers everything one could want from rich, delicious Italian food. This is the kind of artery clogging and yet awesome food that my grandmother used to heap on my plate when I would visit. The Angel hair with ricotta, prosciutto and spinach is TO DIE 4. And I love the meatballs and the homemade dressing, especially the very garlicy house Italian. My boss says whenever he is sick he orders D'Amico's spaghetti and meatballs with garlic bread and goes and picks it up to take home. Indeed, when he had back surgery, this is the meal he requested. I don't blame him. In fact, most people I know sight this place as their fave Italian place in the burgh. Some people are happier with something chicer and less authentic, but if you're not uptight and appreciate things for what they are, you will love this place. Before I went to D'Amico's I read the reviews online (like always) and they said that it was an average italian restaurant. And that is exactly what it was. Nothing special, just average. I got the gnocchis, which in my opion was the best part of the meal. It comes with wedding soup, a salad, and the entree. The wedding soup was ok, the salad was typical (but the homemade ranch was delicious!), and the gnocchis and red sauce were good. The atmosphere was a family-style, family-run restaurant complete with its own staff of older women who have been working there for 50 years. Our waitress wasn't the most pleasant. I asked if the meat sauce was extremely meaty and she gave me ""its meat sauce honey"". Overall it was just an average meal. I probably would not go back again. more

I dined at D'Amico's place last night (and then Paddy Cakes) and enjoyed a hearty portion of gnocchi. My partner had Fettuccinni Alfredo which he enjoyed. The salad was fresh and crisp topped with an italian house dressing. The fresh bread and butter were a perfect complement to the meal. Pros: decently priced more

I worked in Bloomfield for a year and a half trying all the places up and down the street. D'Amico's was great. My colleagues and I debated the merits of here vs. the Pleasure Bar. The Pleasure Bar won out on the sausage and meatball sandwiches, otherwise it was D'Amico's The salad comes with the meal, the dressing is home made and always great. Pasta specials are always outstanding. The service is friendly and efficient. They were also accomodating to kids. I do not recall receiving mixed vegetables, we usually had rabe or something specially ordered. Complaints about the vegetables may be valid. I cannot recall having a poor lunch or dinner. After trying most of the neighborhood's restaurants, we've settled on D'Amico's. The food is terrific, the veal turandot is to die for. The best soup I've ever eaten. Tony and the wait staff are incredibly friendly (Gayle is the best). The atmosphere is cozy. We visit Pittsburgh three or four times a year and always make the trip to D'Amicos. New to the area, I was hoping to find a great Italian Bistro in ""Pittsburgh's Little Italy"". Unfortunately, by the time I left D'Amicos, I wished I had just eaten at home. The food is not terrible, but frozen vegetables out of a bag (Green Giant?) at an Italian restaurant is just plain wrong. Great service on the floor needs to be backed up by some inspiration in the kitchen. more

Dinner at DAmico's was consistant in it's inattention to detail and sloppiness. The meal started with stale bread and watery house Merlot, and moved on to wilted lettuce salad garnished with canned black olives. Soup was very Campbellesque. Our entrees were also disappointing - veal came with a side of frozen vegetables, and the escargot would have been tasty except for the overwhelming rosmary. There was so much that it felt like my dinner had been dropped in a pine forest. THis was a $50 meal, and I expected much more. We'll never go back.
