Best soups and salads! 9/25/2006

Have you tried Benevolence? It is a small cafe in an alley between the North Market and the Greek Orthodox Church. They have delicious salads and homemade soups along with sandwiches and wonderful baked goods. I love the Grains of the Goddess bread which is filled with sunflower seeds, pumpkins seeds, nuts, and poppy seeds. Their house salad is huge, filling and delcious - overflowing with carrots, cabbage, cucumber, tomato, eggs, swiss cheese, and a great housemade dressing. They also have brunch on Saturdays. After ordering, have a seat at a long communal table and enjoy the calming atmosphere. They have cute little gift shop items and literature as well. New owners 9/8/2006

I think ownership has changed in the last year. While it is still....vegetarian... I was quite surprised to find an egg had been added to my salad. The atmosphere seems different too. But overall, still seems the same with books and cards and delicious menu. more

Delicious & Nutritious Vegetarian Cuisine 4/8/2006

Benevolence has excellent wholesome soups, salads, sandwiches and breads. They also have a great fresh baked dessert selection - I love the coconut moonies, a coconut macaroon with chocolate chips. The communal tables add to the eclectic feel of the place. They are now open longer hours. Check their web site first. . . http://www.benevolencecafe.com/ more

Good wholesome food 4/5/2006

Benevolence is an unassuming vegetarian café near the North Market (where they have a bakery shop). The food and decor are both simple. They specialize in delicious breads and soups made from scratch with mostly organic ingredients. Dinners are served with a choice of soup or salad (the salads are also excellent). Most of the seats are wood benches which enhance the casual, earthy atmosphere. They promote earth-friendly living with no plastic silverware or dish ware. Even the to-go containers are glass. There is also an interesting variety of literature available. more

excellent vegetarian food 8/15/2005

What can I say, the food a Benevolence is amazing. Nothing fancy, just great vegetarian comfort foods. Mostly homemade breads, soups, and sandwiches. The restaurant is tucked back in a gray stone/block building on Swan Street. It is mostly a lunch place, though they might be open for dinner once a week?? The inside is warm and inviting with several long wooden tables and lots of interesting books most with a environmental/vegetarian slant. more
