Editorial review from Citysearch 4/23/2013

I have been to Asian Star several times in the last couple of months. The food has been excellent each time and the service has been top notch, and I've eaten in many top restaurants around the country, from Chicago to San Fran to New Orleans to Dallas to Orlando and these guys are 4.8 stars in my book. \r \r They may have had problems a couple of years ago, but those problems are solved at this point in time. Of course, we all know that that tastes vary and management changes, but, as of the first 4 months of 2013, these guys are doing well.\r \r When I'm in Salt Lake and want Chinese, this is my first choice. more

Lied about MSG 2/23/2010

I am one of those people who CANNOT tolerate MSG. I hunt down restaurants that won't use it - like New Delhi Palace, Thai Siam, Thai Spice and Hunan Garden. Some restaurants don't even understand when you ask them to ""leave it out"". Asian Star simply lies about it -""Oh no - we don;t use MSG!!"" she said. Yeah, sure, ---- the food tasted great (why wouldn't it with all that flavor enhancer?) but 15 hours of splitting headache later, I am committed to NEVER eating at ASIAN Star again. If you value your cardiovascular system and your wallet, go somewhere else for Chinese food. Pros: Fast Service - Nice Atmosphere Cons: Price too high - lied about MSG more

DO YOU LIKE CRAP, THIS IS THE PLACE!!! 11/15/2009

I am not a fan of Asian food to begin with. When my wife decided to check this place out I wasn't too excited. When we left, both of us weren't. The building was impressive, I was impressed with the valet driving and the super courteous greeter at the door. We were taken immediately to a nice table and that ladies and gentleman, is as far as we go with the good impressions in this place. It was all downhill from here. Place was dirty as hell, it looked as they needed to vacuum that place a decade ago. I orders a plate thingy, I was expecting this to take sometime to get served, but amazingly, I was served in about 5 minutes after ordering. That of course, let me to believe, they were bulk cooking and only scooped me my choice. After my fast-food-like-speed dish, the taste wasn't the best. I couldn't tell the difference between the restaurant and any quick Chinese in a box place. Same thing. Only difference is you're paying twice more. The lowdown is the following: Place sucks, dirty and bulky food that tastes gross....but you will pay twice as much as if you had gone to Panda Express..... I recommend getting Bacillus Cereus from another place, at least it won't make a dent on your wallet Pros: It's indoors Cons: It's in my State more

Its all looks 11/15/2009

I was anxious to try this place because the building looks pretty cool and I thought that the food was going to be just as good as the looks .But this place serves food just like a cheap Chinese Buffet. But they charge more and serve gross old food .The rice was burnt, everything that was fried tasted like it was fried in very very old oi. I was left with that bad after taste in my mouth from the old oil.And besides verything the place is dirty and expensive. Pros: Nothing Cons: Dirty place, gross food, bad service and expensive food more

WORST MANAGEMENT! 9/10/2009

The place is nice, food is just like every other Chinese place. I took my brother there for his birthday and we wanted a big table because we had a big table and asked the waitress to seat us and the manager yelled at her and said to us in a rude tone that the big table was already taken, and we asked if there were any other big tables in that big restaurant. We were seated upstairs were there were plenty of other ""big"" tables. When the waitress brought us extra plates he yelled at her again! And they (there were 2 of them) looked so grumpy and rude but when a group of doctors walked in they were so submissive to them. I will never go there again! Pros: atmosphere Cons: service more

Great Food, Best Service 9/2/2009

The food at the beautiful restaraunt pleases anyone because their variety and quality sometimes make it difficult to choose just one dish. The reason we like to go to the Asian Star emanates from the impeccable service. Good service is rare, and great service deserves five stars and two thumbs up! Pros: The service makes the food even better. Cons: I wish I lived closer. more

Very disappointed 6/5/2009

I ordered General Tao's Chicken and did not like it at all. The dish did not taste fresh. I thought that the food quality was like Panda Express's but I paid $13 for the dish. I was very disappointed with the experience there. Pros: Nice decoration Cons: Not good quality more

Poor service 1/21/2009

Our group of 8 went to Asian Star for lunch and the service was very poor. The food was adequate but nothing to brag about. Our server didn't speak very good english and messed up the bill. The food seemed overpriced for the quality. I wouldn't recommend this restaurant. Pros: somewhat quiet atmosphere Cons: parking, service more

did anyone else notice that after the move this restaurants food quality went way down and price went up 11/19/2008

soo sad to see such a great tasting restaurant trade food quality to move to a better location. i will never go there again. Pros: nice place Cons: bad food i can go to panda express for this kind of chinese more

Great Walnut Shrimp 6/11/2008

I love the Asian Star and their Walnut Shrimp is to die for! Although the menu is a little pricey, I've found that every dish I order there is seasoned well and cooked to order. I also like that they have the option between traditional family-style dining and individual serving plates. All the staff was polite and quick to help. The wait-staff does check on you often, but I don't believe it's in a rushing manner, I believe they just want to be prompt to help. I would recommend, and I personally take all family members/friends that come to town here for a relaxing atmosphere with wonderful food. more

Best Chinese**** 5/7/2008

This is the ONLY place to eat chinese, my personal favorite is the Walnut Shrimp. It is mouth watering and delicious, totally worth the price. Anything you order is going to boggle your mind. The meat you order whether its chicken or beef is going to be tender and fresh. The service is amazing, the owner is very friendly and personable. Pros: EVERYTHING, food, service Cons: nothing more

Great Atmosphere 12/21/2007

The building is gorgous inside and out. Free valet parking is welcomed especially during a snow storm. I went to Asian Star because my friend works there as a hostess (she's really cute). I wanted to see her and the place. Anyway, everything was extravagant from the outside in. However, I gave Asian Star 3 stars due to service and food. Pros: Cute hostess and good valet parking Cons: bad waitress and food more

ALL I CAN SAY IS WOW!!!!!!!!!!! 12/14/2007

I am a food critic. I am here to tell you that this place is Awesome. I had the walnut shrimp and if you like shrimp you will love this dish. Pros: Valet Parking more

Not anything better than 2 stars 11/17/2007

Yeah, I don't understand how this place used to get such good reviews. There was nothing special about it. Sampan is probably better. Maybe management changed or something? We made the mistake of coming here after going to Thaifoon and that place was just amazing but Asain Star - unlike it's hip looking outside, was nothing of the sort. It starts off with complimentary valet parking which is nice enough. Once inside, a nice fish tank or two but the inside is not quite what you would expect and more on the average to upper average scale. The menu has some of the similar things on it that a cheaper Chinese place would have but at least it is not cluttered with 10+ pages. We got some egg roll appetizers which tasted about the same as frozen. Then our main meal items were about the same as others have described. They were warm, but I was not impressed with the walnut shrimp. It was sweet, and probably some would like it - but way too sweet and thick. Getting out of the place was crowded and we had to wait awhile for valet. They had several looking tacky signs saying gratuity appreciated (for the valet) All in all, just 2 stars and the price was pretty much the same as Thaifoon. more

Ketchup and Mustard with Chinese Food? 10/2/2007

My husband and I dined at Asian Star recently and are absolutely disgusted. With our meal, instead of the usual sweet and sour sauce, we were given ketchup and mustard! We saw it and couldn't believe it so we tasted it and sure enough, it was good ol' american ketchup and mustard. My husband thought maybe there was something we didn't know so he dipped his shrimp in it and it was disgusting! When I ordered I asked what was better between two entrees and the waitress said ""neither"" and told me something else to get. If the waittress doesn't even have faith in the food, why should we? Finally, the valet service was terrible. We had to wait 10 minutes for our car when we could have been long gone if they had let us park ourselves (in the empty parking lot right in front of us). We will never go there again and would never recommend it to anyone. Pros: Nice atmosphere Cons: Terrible food and bad valet more

Not good Chinese food 8/30/2007

It has a great new location in Sandy with free valet parking, etc., and the atmosphere is pleasant, but that's where it ends. The food was not good--bland, unapetizing, etc. Some of my party even got sick after eating. I would not recommend it... Pros: Good location Cons: Food, no prompt seating, valet parking only is kind of inconvenient for coming or going quickly more

AVOID this terrible chinese food! 5/3/2007

The absolute WORST chinese food I've ever tasted. The only thing good about that place is the design of the restaurant. The use the CHEAPEST products and it's overpriced. I dine out probably 4 times a week and have eaten all over the world. This is by far the worst chinese food I've ever had and will never go back. Pros: The building is cool looking. Cons: The service and the food. more

Expensive Chinese food not Worth the price 3/21/2007

I read the reviews for this restaurant before going so I was expecting really good chinese food, but I was dissapointed to what I got at this restaurant, the ambience is excellent, the service was good, the food was bad, Pros: Ambience Cons: Expensive more

Worst Chinese Food I have ever tasted 3/12/2007

The Asian Star reminded me of Grand Central Station on a Monday morning, people moving purposefully through a throng to get to the reservation desk, and then waiting anxiously to be seated somewhere in the cavernous holding. The concept is nice enough - big city Seattle, quite avant-gard, large picture windows with a view of the mountains, but what you end up with is a high end fast food atmosphere, and a hustle in, hustle out mentality. Pros: Valet Parking Cons: Crowded, noisy, overpriced, terrible food. more

One of Salt Lake's Best Chinese Restaurants 10/30/2006

Very good Chinese food - nice atmosphere at new location. Free valet parking is a plus. Service is prompt and there are ample portion sizes. Pros: Good food more
