Not What They Seem 1/24/2007

My family moved into the village because they were new apartments, had balconies, and storage units and seemed like a good choice for non-student residents. We pay close to $700 a month for rent. In the first three months we found the walls to be paper thin - we could hear TV's, conversations, appliances, radios etc.; there were dings in the walls, pencil marks left from the construction workers, cuts in our and linoleum floors, hardened plaster drips hanging from the ceiling and painted over, cold air coming through the front door; our Refrigerator stopped working the second or third weekend we were there and when we called management(as this was on their list of reasons we could call the emergency number after hours) we were told that there was nothing that could be done until Monday (this was Saturday eve.) and to store our food in a cooler on the patio, luckily the fridge came back on and then started freezing all of our food and the thermostat had to be replaced. One afternoon I came home to find a strange smell in the apt. and the bathroom fan running with the door closed - it scared me to death! - I discovered that with no warning or notice a repair crew had come to reseal the bath tub. We were never told before or after we moved in that the bath tub was not in working order, and when I complained to management I was told that the repair crew was only available on short notice and had to come then, when I persisted that I had had no notice that they were needed or coming she then apologized. The dryer has to be run through two complete cycles in order for any size load to get dry. The 'pans' under the burners on the stove are peeling their top layer and have burn marks in them although they have had nothing spilled on/in them. Our patio door has no screen on it and when my husband requested one he was told that they were stored because the runners on the bottom often cause problems and it's just a maintenance hassle but if we didn't mind he would get us one, "no problem". Later he called and said that he had misinformed my husband and that it would cost us $80 to have one and if we installed it ourselves and caused any damage that we would be charged for that, but we were welcome to take the screen with us or leave it when we moved. The screens on the windows bang in the wind, the door frames and/or ceilings are not straight (one end of door frame touches ceiling, the other end does not). Every time I have vacuum I find sawdust in the bag less vacuum cup, which leads me to understand that they did not clean up their mess before laying the carpet. There is a large puddle of water at the bottom of the stairs leading outside that comes almost halfway up my shoe (it's so large that you either have to wade through or leap to get to the first stair), this puddle turns into ice overnight and until the sun melts it again, everyday as the snow melts the puddle gets bigger. Note that we are the first ones to have lived in this apartment, and again that all this happened just in the first three months. more
