I hate to be the one to raise a dissenting voice but I had a very bad experience with altering the collar on a very expensive suit. He claims it is because the newer suits do not leave him enough material to work with, but whatever the cause, the result was that one side of the lapel looks different and the middle of the collar looks like he had to sew something in the middle, leaving a bump. On top of that, he charged me way too much ($160 for fixing collar, raising coat sleeves and making pant cuffs). I asked him before how much it would be, but he started rambling about other things and I never got an answer. The other alterations to the suit were OK but I will not take anything there again.
