Great 10/21/2006

The Upper East Side, as Ive mentioned before, is not my forte. But, every once in a while, one must travel above14th Street. Or, 42nd Street. Or, 59th Street. What we find on the southwest corner of 70th & 1st Avenue is a delightfully casual Mexican restaurant called Cilantro. Its unassuming and seems to blend into the myriad of endless restaurants lining 1st-3rd Avenue. But, when I was craving some great margaritas and guacamole, that is precisely what I found at Cilantro. The food and drink here in this modestly decorated restaurant are incredibly well priced. Most restaurants present a small ramekin of guacamole for $10.00. A few dips of the chips and the green goodness is gone. But, not here. They provide an overwhelming amount of freshly prepared guacamole. Its an amazing bargain, honestly. And, the margaritas are not served flimsily in dainty glasses. You get a tall, substantial glass and if youre fortunate, as I was that evening, theyll offer their watermelon margaritas with fresh watermelon puree. Amazing. The rest of the food is abundant and good, but what most impress me is their guacamole and margaritas, a staple where ever I seek Mexican, even if on the Upper East Side more
