Best

This hasbeen my favorite sushi place for years. They have the most delicious sauces for their rolls. I keep trying the newer sushi places, but always love Kyoto more. It is not...

Worst

It's Austin so it sucks, right? Well yes, but that is not what I imagined when the hostess greeted me and read the Japanese lettering on my shirt. The service was very warm and fr...

kyoto 4/14/2006

Sushi was average at best, I have had better at central market. Too much rice with the nigiri. The rainbow roll was stuffed with imatation crab !!!. Service was good staff friendly, prices were normal. I would not go back. more

Best Sushi in Austin! 2/13/2006

You will crave their Longhorn Roll, and Kyoto Rolls again and again. I have tried most of the sushi restaurants in town, and this is by far my favorite. Pros: Best Rolls because of the sauces they use, Kyoto Roll and Longhorn Roll more

User review by kimasha 11/30/2005

The restaurant was excellent-the sushi, the ambience, the quiet music that just calms you. If you love a great atmosphere and sushi, then Kyoto is the place to go! Pros: sushi Cons: parking more

User review by angelicwendi 9/29/2005

I have been to so many sushi places, and Kyoto is honestly one of the best places I've been...especially for their happy hour prices. As for the slow service, I'm pretty sure it's only like that during happy hour, because I've been there before happy hour started and it wasn't very crowded. Definitely do not go there with a large crowd and expect to be served promptly! But although my waiters have all been rather slow, I have found the service to be wonderful and the owners pleasant. Some tips: I really recommend the Longhorn. I'm not much for the sweet and sour taste, but even I love the Longhorn. Also, I'd suggest you get there before happy hour starts if you don't have the patience to wait for a seat (but that's pretty much common sense). Pros: happy hour prices Cons: limited space more

Hooray For Happy 45 mins. 6/27/2005

During the happy hour, (which they shortened to 45 mins) appitizers are incredibly cheap. usually my family and I load up on dumplings and sushi and we are set! Although happy 45 mins starts at 6:00 it's best to get there around 5:45 because there is always a long line. There is virtually no parking and since it's downtown you usually end up spending $10 dollers for a parking spot but it's worth it. The food is sooooooooo good! I love it. Service is horrible and it takes forever for the food to come out yet Kyoto is still my favorite restaraunt! The ambiance is just great! You also have a choice to sit in the traditional Japanese table where you sit on the ground but you can also sit at a table.(Your choice) Cheap beer, good food, and a wonderful atmosphere what more could you want? Yay for KYOTO!!!!!!!!!!!! Pros: Happy Hour!, Great Decor, Good Sushi Cons: No Parking, Bad Service, long wait for food more

Never Again 2/14/2005

Our overall experience was horrendous. We were promised a tatami room for our friend's birthday, and when we got there, they said it was unavailable and were very unapologetic about it. We waited about an hour or so for our food, and when it was ready they brought it out to us over a 30 minute period. We were a large group, about 13 of us, but it was ridiculous! Some of group didn't even see their dinner and cancelled their order. There are a million other things that were terrible that I can't remember. So don't go there. Oh, yeah, and their sushi was nothing special. Cons: Service, Crowded more

Love the sushi happy hour 2/4/2005

This is a great sushi spot. The tatami rooms are lovely. I love the sushi happy hour (before 7pm) -- it's a more limited menu but the items are about half price. Last time, a friend and I had a full sushi meal with sake for $20. Can't beat that! Pros: inexpensive, ambience Cons: street parking more

An Enjoyable Experience!! 1/26/2005

The location is quaint, and makes you feel like you are off the beaten path - even though you are in the heart of Austin! The traditional seating area was really fun, and the happy hour option allowed us to try out the various offerings with out breaking our bank accounts! We really enjoyed it! The seating hostess was very friendly, the food and service were a little slow- but I'm used to chips and salsa to keep me until food arrives, so it may only have been my perception... :) Overall, I can't wait to go back!! Pros: Atmosphere, Inexpensive Cons: , Off-site Parking more

Longhorn roll a favorite, nice place 11/16/2004

Well a bunch of us went here a while back, it was a good experience. They accomodated for at least 12 of us, and the most popular dish ordered was the Longhorn Roll. I had no complaints about the food or service, and I liked that Longhorn Roll. I highly recommend this place, it has to be Top 5 sushi places in Austin for sure. Pros: Service, Big Groups, Longhorn Roll more

Bad sushi, extremely bad service 9/16/2004

The menu is extremely small and the service is horrendous. After the first round of some appetizers and some rolls (which were not fresh and poorly made but what can you expect from $1/piece and $3 rolls?), we wanted to order some more but we could not find our waitress for 20 minutes. We ordered and waited for 30 minutes - and got the wrong item. The waitress apologized and offered to pay for the mistake but I felt bad so I just took the wrong item and asked for the check and didn't see the waitress again for a long time. It was just so frustrating waiting around and asking repeatedly for such routine things (refills, asking for the check). I'd rather to pay more at Musashino or Mikado to get good quality sushi and better service than Kyoto. Pros: cheap , nice hostess Cons: , bad service, parking more

Bad food, good atomosphere 11/21/2003

I've been to many Japanese restaurants in Austin. I must say that this place has nothing compared to Musashino when it comes to food. I like the atmosphere, but the food was bad. The sushi were not as fresh compared to Musashino...especially the Unagi. In addition, there are only about 30 items on the menu. Pros: atmosphere, Owner was very nice Cons: food!, menu more

Our Waiter Was Impossible to Find! 2/7/2003

The food was wonderful, and the ambience was great. I enjoyed stowing away my shoes and sitting on the floor, but our waiter was NOT attentive and was incredibly slow. For the price you pay, you expect good food and good service. That is not what we received. Pros: ambience authenticity Cons: slow service more

Ky Oto is #1 12/27/2002

The food is excellent, great presentation. The downside is the poor entry from street - above a bar that has a dank lingering smell but it disappears after you leave the entry way. The stairs are steep with no elevator. The food is TOPS. The chefs and servers are PROUD. The place is immaculate. The other review I read sounded WAY OFF - and I've been there a whole lot. Pros: good value, good food, proud chefs & mgrs Cons: upstairs, poor entry frm street more
