Editorial review from Citysearch 3/9/2014

This is the first review I've ever written and hesitated to do so for a while since I don't want to cast aspersions on someone based on one experience. However, I felt it was my responsibility to voice my concerns about Dyana at Yves Durif. This is not a review of the salon, which offered great customer service and attention and tried to resolve my issues, but commentary on my haircut. I went to Dyana in June for a cut for a special event. The cut she gave me was fantastic and lasted beautifully for 7 months! It was a blunt cut with long layers and despite initial concerns when it was shorter, I ended up loving the cut. I went back to her at the end of this year and asked for JUST a trim, letting her know how happy I was with the cut. I came out with a butchered haircut that looks like an ‘80s metal band meets a middle aged- upper east side lady. I'm not sure what happened, but my hair was totally cut into in all the wrong ways and it is not remediable for months because of the erratic shorter layers and cut-into ends. It has now been 3 months and I see no hope in site for quite a while. I would not be writing this review if Dyana had been able to acknowledge any problems with the cut even if there was nothing to do about it. It's disconcerting that her cutting could be so inconsistent and that she either wasn't able to see it or was unable to acknowledge that she might have had a bad day. What she did do was blame her cut on the condition of my hair, which was healthy when I went in to see her. \r The salon management was very attentive to my problem, but the cut was so bad that there was no real resolution. \r I decided to write this review because despite the fact that I know we all have bad days and that life is imperfect, my concern is that Dyana is oblivious to that possibility which may speak to further inconsistency moving forward and I’d like to save future clients from my fate.\r more

Diana is fabulous! and amazing! 10/13/2010

I had the pleasure of going to Yves Durif last week! I have always wanted to experience the luxury of being at a world class hair salon. Yves at the Carlyle was incredible. Everything I imagined and beyond. The staff defined the term professional, yet they all seemed very personal and engaging. I got a glimpse of Yves! Almost fainted! But, the absolute best is Diana! The initial disappointment of Yves being too busy to style my hair was gone the instance Diana ran her tiny fingers thru my hair. This girl is magic with scissors! I did not want to get out of her chair. I just wanted to put her in my tote bag and keep her for myself. I truly can not wait until my next appointment! Almost forgot to mention her incredible blowout. Seriously, I would have never imagined my hair looking soxoxoxo perfect! I just feel guilty about keeping this a secret from my circle of friends... so I feel obliged to write this review in order to ease my guilt. more

Best Haircut/Blowout by Dyana!!! 3/11/2010

I work in the fashion industry, and I needed to find a new salon (because my old stylist moved to LA), so I asked around to find the best salon in the city. A friend of suggested Yves Durif Salon in the Carlyle Hotel, so I thought I would give it a try. When I arrived at the hotel, I was overwhelmed with the courtesy of the hotel/salon staff members. When I met Dyana, she was so cute! She is beautiful and stylish, which made me feel comfortable with her. She listed to what I wanted, and she made suggestions that I was excited about. I left the salon feeling gorgeous. I would recommend Dyana to anyone I know for a haircut or blow dry. She is amazing. I couldn't imagine going anywhere else in the city. Pros: beautiful salon Cons: a bit pricey more

Fantastic, Reliable, Best Haircut in NYC! 1/8/2010

I have been getting my haircut by Yves and highlights with Daivd for years and followed them to Yves's move to the salon at the Carlyle Hotel. Yves is a master at haircuts -he uses his expertise to perfectly frame the shape of my face, uplift my expression and add wonderful body and movement to my hair's texture. David does absolutely fantastic highlights -keeping them natural yet lustrous and perfect for my skin tone. I come to them all the way from Brooklyn and leave the salon feeling completely revitalized. Yves and his staff are all lovely and friendly: people who are so skilled at what they, but who put all pretensions to the side. The best cut and color I have ever had, and thus, I keep coming back for more! Pros: Great haircut, great colorist, friendly environment more

Great haircuts with Patti 9/19/2009

I've been going to the Yves Durif salon for a few years now for haircuts with Patti and occasional highlights with David. The haircuts Patti gives me always look great and grow out really well. She's also so friendly and sweet that it really is a joy to visit the salon. I've also had highlights with David, who is fabulous as well. My highlights always look great and grow out in a way that look very natural. The price for highlights with David recently went up, and they were already a lot to begin with, so I don't know how often I'll have them done at this point (maybe only once a year). The salon recently moved to The Carlyle, and I have to say that I do miss the old location in the townhouse, as it was larger and in a more convenient location. But the location at The Carlyle is very nice as well, just a bit on the ""cozier"" side. Pros: Haircuts that look great with friendly service Cons: Pricey (but worth it, I think) more

From Poof to Pin....=) 2/2/2009

I have been going to Patti for over 10 years. I have followed her from place to place and I wouldn?t do that if she was not worth it! I have very thick wavy hair, and wear it back often because I usually do not know what to do with it. Each and every time I leave her, my hair is pin-straight and I feel confident and beautiful. I couldn?t recommend her more! more

Best Internationally 12/13/2008

If you want a perfect hair cut , go to Yves. I have had cuts in the leading salons in London, Paris, Rome, Adelaide and Singapore. I finally found nirvana with Yves. I have been flying in to the city from Michigan, for the past 10 years, for only Yves to cut my hair. It is perfection every time and I am not an easy person to please. I travel globally and have had to go for several months without a cut. My hair always looks perfectly groomed, even with vast climate changes, because of his skillful expertise. He is a true master of hair and a treasured find. Pros: perfection every time more

Haircut 12/5/2008

Yves Durif is a master craftsman. Over the years I've been to a bevy of haridressers from NY and LA to London and Paris. While their work looked good in the salon, once I got home and tried to do-it-myself the results were not so impressive. I have hair that looks easy to cut, but is deceptively difficult. Some of the hair is fine and straight and some is course and curly....and there's a lot of it. I've been going to Yves for over three years now, and every cut has been superb. He's an artist who knows how to make people look and feel their best. more

Disappointed - Twice 10/30/2008

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Yves cut my hair twice and each time, it was probably the worst cut I've ever had. The first time, he's spent 30 minutes criticizing my existing cut saying that the sides were uneven. When I left, I thought his cut was unremarkable but perhaps it would come alive when I did it at home. Instead, when I got home, I realized that he had FLIPPED the asymmetry and he texturized one side way more than the other. It was far worse than my original cut. I had to live with it for 5 weeks. When I returned, I showed him the problem and explained how impossible it was to work with. He said he would fix it. You know how hard it is to really assess a cut when you're sitting 10 feet from a mirror and the stylist has just blown it out, right? Well, it didn't look bad but - again - when I got home, it was clear that he did NOTHING to correct the problem. I spent $400 on 2 haircuts that were a total waste. Now, I have to pay someone to fix it once and for all. I'll never go back. Pros: Beautiful Salon Cons: Terrible haircut - twice! more

Best Cut and Manicure! 8/11/2008

I'm an UES NY girl through and through and agree that my best salon experiences has consistenly come from Yves Durif. I get my cut from Patti, beyond-amazing colors from David, and the most excellent manicures and pedicures from the sweet Emily. They all take care of you so well here - and it is such a calming and beautiful site. I always look forward to coming to Yves Durif's...I can't wait to get my hair done here for my upcoming wedding! Pros: All - try manicures with Emily! Cons: None I can think of more

Gorgeous haircuts 7/9/2008

It was our first visit to the salon, and we had a delightful experience!!! My girlfriend and I had haircuts with Patti and Maysoon. We both looked amazing!! When paying our bill, the handsome gentleman at the desk, Mark, was extremely gracious and not only helped us with the best products to keep ourselves looking beautiful, but also directed us to the best restaurant to eat at across the street, named 212, and informed us of the hottest and trendiest shopping areas in town!!! Thanks so much from a couple of Georgia Girls!! Pros: beautiful hair, charming staff more

LInda Stylist 4/30/2008

Linda has been my hairstylist since 1993. I follow her wherever she goes. I even forced her to do my hair for my wedding! I have left NYC for California more than once in my adult life and I always return to linda for the best cut and blowout in NYC. Pros: excellent coffee Cons: the chairs could be more comfortable!!!! more

If you want to turn heads... 5/2/2007

I'm really picky when it comes to my hair and a friend of mine told me about this salon. I went to check it out and I have to say, I had such a GREAT experience! Everyone is so friendly there, it's in a beautiful space - full of natural light, which is so pleasant - and the stylist, Patti, gave me one of the best cuts I've ever had! Another stylist, Maria, is a wonder with highlights - they look incredible. People keep asking me where I get my hair done - I love it! I highly recommend checking it out! Pros: Ambiance, talented and friendly staff, welcoming, beautiful space more
