Best

Loved the crab cerviche in the martini glass. Ordered Camerons favorite- the best of puffy tacos, verde enchilada-great. Also, order relleno. Great food and drinks, fun atmosphere...

Worst

I gave a rating of 2 stars because, while the food was great, the service personnel were, for the most part, terribly rude. I say this with the exception of one of the hostesses ...

almost perfect 3/16/2006

I have enjoyed my experiences at vivo , and recomended quite a few people there. The drinks are very good. The food is good as well, although the queso is not impressive at all. As far as the drinks being overpriced, maybe. It's worth it however, they are top notch. The service though has not been up to par with the lovely atmosphere. I experinced an attitude from the server and host on two differant occasions. I did however, recieve a flower at the end of my meal which is an awesome touch. more

Lame. 3/3/2006

Quite an unpleasant experience. I had heard mixed reviews from my friends, but must side with the negatives this time. Upon arrival, my wife and were greeted with surly stares from behind the bar. After a few tasteless appetizers and overpriced frozen margaritas (obscenely spiked with cheap-tasting tequila), my wife and I decided to forgo the entrees. I guess if you're an alcoholic with an expense account and no tastebuds, you might like it. Pros: patio, not crowded at peak t Cons: food, management, drinks more

Bad food, cool bar. 3/1/2006

The bar looks cool, gets packed, and, although the drinks are over priced ($8.95 for a HOUSE frozen), its a nice place to hang on the eastside. Unfortunately the food is really bad. The salsa left a heavy onion taste/film in my mouth. It was gross. They claim to have won the salsa festival yet there is no proof on the Chronicle website. Reflecting on the taste Im confident that this is just something they say to promote themselves. Either way, it wasn't good. They also claim to be healthy. This I believe as their rice, beans, and Verde Enchiladas tasted ""healthy"", very ""healthy"". Unfortunately I wanted something that tasted, at the very least, good. Although the food is bad the bar is nice and it's a cool place to bring a large group to party. After a few $9.00 house margaritas it won't matter what the food tastes like. Pros: Bar Cons: Food more

Will definitely go back! 2/26/2006

A colorful restaurant, and the patio looks fun, too bad it was raining! I will definitely go back. Great Tex-Mex. The waitress wasn't very friendly, but the thick, crispy chips and awesome salsa made up for it. Also there is a large parking lot, so parking shouldn't be a problem. Pros: food, ambiance, patio more

great atmosphere...drinks way too expensive! 2/21/2006

Your first though is east Austin? Once you walk in, you feel the atmosphere! Great variety of people. Not the usual crowd! Great place for a date. Mexican martinis are better than Trudys! But again....way over priced! Pros: atmosphere, location, service Cons: expensive drinks more

30-something LOVES this place!!! 2/16/2006

Vivo is THE hip place for people in their late 20's & early 30's.I love the art work, the dj spinning in the bar area, the awesome patio, the terrific hot sauce & puffy tacos, the flowers, the candles...everything! I would NOT take my kids to this place on Fri. and Sat. nights though. The bar area is full of all of us partying to the wonderful dj's loud music, drinking, & generally acting like young crazy people on a weekend.I saw a nice couple there last Sat. w/their 4 & 7 year olds & they looked shocked.People were in the bar area taking crazy photos, acting wild, & saying some loud ""adult words.""(Definitely nothing out of hand or out of the ordinary at a place w/this type of weekend atmosphere.)That is great fun for all of us 20 and 30 somethings! Not so great for young children.Fabulous place! more

very cute place 11/16/2005

the outdoor seating is wonderful -- tons of plants. they put orchids in the margaritas, and the margaritas are very strong and tasty! they also give all of the girls roses as you leave. very highly recommended =) Pros: margaritas, ambience more

Watch Out for the Alcohol Content 10/22/2005

Warning to all who go to Vivo - the bartenders make the drinks EXTREMELY strong. My friends and I went there and only had two drinks and all of us were very sick afterwards. They pour a huge quantity of extra tequila over their margaritas. We were absolutely wasted after two drinks! It is very irresponsible of them to serve such strong drinks and there is no doubt going to be a time when one of their customers gets into an accident. Vivo is great for food and atmosphere, but the owners seriously need to rethink the amount of alcohol that they put in their drinks. more

Nice start 3/14/2005

Every customer realizes that any restaurant makes mistakes, but the restaurants that go out of their way to rectify an undesirable situation are the ones that seem to be the most successful. That was our first experience at Vivo. After we were seated for about 10 minutes and we had asked for some chips and salsa. The host and waitress were both horrified that we never were served any at our seating. They brought out chips, salsa, and complimentary queso. Very unexpected, very unnecessary, but very appreciated. Our first experience won't be our last, the atmosphere was great, the staff extremely friendly and accomodating, the food and margarita's very good. The gaucamole puffed tacos were really tasty (this is coming from someone who traditonally avoids guac.). Pros: service, value, atmosphere Cons: Muddy parking more

Small menu 2/20/2005

There are only like 5 different things to choose from on the menu. They claim their puffy tacos are the best but I think the enchiladas are amazing. Great salsa and strong margs. Every girl gets a flower when she leaves. Very cute and quaint. Pros: amazing margs, great atmosphere Cons: small menu more

Neat place, great food, wonderful drinks 2/10/2005

This place is terrific -- we discovered it only a few weeks ago and wish we had come earlier! The whole experience is wonderful -- the ambience is great, the salsa is completely addictive (I am seriously considering ordering plain enchiladas and just pouring the salsa on top), the drinks are very tasty and large, the puffy tacos are a delicious and fun treat, and they give the ladies a rose on the way out! The porch looks really nice for warmer weather, too. Beware - their happy hour margaritas are tiny, but very strong. Pros: Great food, Interesting drinks, nice porch Cons: small menu more

Better places in town 12/25/2004

Salsa was very heavy on the garlic, and the food was very salty. Was looking forward to fresher tasting food. Atmosphere is wonderful. Only wish the food was better. Pros: artwork Cons: , queso way too salty, salsa more

y u m 6/29/2004

vivo is fantastic! its one of my new favorites! the food is great- the queso is amazing!! its definitely worth getting off your well-beaten path to head east and dine here! the only negative -the drinks are a way over-priced. $8 for a margarita! i say pass the regular margarita and go straight for the mexi martini (texas tivo) for $8.50 Pros: great food, queso ROCKS, not too crowded more

Texas Best 6/17/2004

I love their Mexican Martinis and the hot sauce is spicy with a flare. The atmosphere is gorgeous and the patio is relaxing with a fountain that takes you away. Vivo is becoming one of the best mexican restaurants in Austin more

Try It 6/9/2004

Vivo has become my favorite mexican food restaurant. The food is delicious, it reminds me of the dishes you get in San Antonio. The inside is beautiful with the fresh roses and the bathroom for the ladies even has petals in the sink. The patio has is a haven and it's being extended. I can't wait to see what the place does next. more

Great Place 6/8/2004

Vivo has a great Happy hour some may not realize. $2.50 house margs and Thursday you can have Dos XX for $1.50. The food is absolutely delicious, the salsa is spicy and they even have a wasabi type salsa most don't know about (if you really like hot). Puffy tacos are not greasy and the enchiladas are so flavorful. Read more in Austin Monthly June issue! more

I Love This Place! 6/5/2004

Great great great. Not the same ol' Tex-Mex. Very unique and tasty food at a reasonalbe price. Finally, a restaurant with great food, ambiance, and margaritas! A prefect place to relax and fill your tummy. more

Go There 6/3/2004

Puffy Tacos, some of the best tortilla soup and sopapillas makes Vivo one of my favorite restaurants. The food is delicious and the improvements on the patio makes it enjoyable and private. The inside captures you with the color and the paintings. If you haven't been please go! Pros: Beautiful, Great margaritas, Great food more

Healthy? Okay 2/4/2004

It may be healthy but it tastes like good old San Antonio Tex-Mex to me, with a few new twists. I have always loved puffy tacos, Jacala's in S.A. were the best til now. The Puffy tacos at Vivo are excellent. The enchiladas are primo and the appetizers are yummy. This is the kind of place you could take a fun group of friends to pre-party or a serious date to impress. Pros: food, service, prices Cons: , a, s more

Extraordinary... 2/3/2004

First, I'm not employed by Vivo. I've visited three times and have been impressed everytimeit really does keep getting better. The puffy tacos are excellent. The beans are awesome. The rice is actually edible, and very tasty. Usually rice is used by restaurants to keep costs low, and usually devoid of redeeming value. At Vivo, it really is good. The salsa is VERY good; several layers of flavor and is not so watery that you can drink it through a straw. Atmosphere is great, very comfortable. Please don't let location fool you, this is as nice a TexMex eatery as you'll find. There is art on the walls, nice carpet, table cloths on the tables etc.. The ONLY drawback for some is location. Rest assured, even though it is East of 35, it's only a couple blocks east, well before the neighborhood gets sketchy. Visit Vivo, judge for yourself. Pros: health-conscious, flavor, experience more
