Village Wok offers authentic Cantonese that is not up to the level of better choices like China Crown in Roseville or Shuang Cheng in Dinkytown. But they are there, and Village Wo...

Health violations and horrid food 11/14/2009

The food is invariably gloppy, greasy, heavy, and disgusting, and everyone I know has gotten food poisoning here. Literally. Eat here long enough, and you WILL get poisoned. Hopefully it doesn't happen your first time. Not a surprise, as it's well-known in the Chinese community as a poor business and objectively speaking their health department record is horrifying. From roaches to rats to employees never washing their hands after using the bathroom. They've been fined more times then they've brought out the wrong dish and yelled at the customer for sending it back, and that's saying something. Pros: nothing. Cons: everything. more

Love the Sweet and Sour Soup 10/4/2009

During my college years I used to frequent this place every other day for the dinner plate specials and their sweet and sour soup - best in town IMO. We don't get up to the cities often, but it's still the same when we do. Pros: good prices Cons: parking more

Overrated but not too bad 3/20/2009

I've been there twice. My first experience wasn't that good. Pros: You don't have to walk far from campus. Cons: Too much grease and fat in food. more

the Village Wok forever 9/17/2008

So I used to eat here on a weekly basis....every Sunday night I would usually get the Sweet and Sour Chicken which is great or as the drunk girl sitting next to me one night said to the host "" It's the whitest chicken I've ever seen."" I think they have good basics and their Iron Hot and Spicey Chicken is great, but be prepared to get a stomachache once and a while. I would say 1 out 4 meals here result in a stomach ache, but the food is so good, espeically in the late hours, that you just can't help yourself. So dine in or take out, but beware of the evil tasty treats.....so good. Pros: Food, Open Late, Tea Cons: Stomach Aches more

I'm not exaggerating here. 5/24/2008

My girlfriend is Cambodian and I am Caucasian so we've been trying several different Asian restaurants lately around Minneapolis/St. Paul. Pros: Actually, the environment wasn't too displeasing. Cons: The food. Taste, smell, look, and the texture. Like an old man's testicals. more

Outstanding food and excellent service 5/19/2008

Savory chow and the green tea is killer! I highly recommend this joint to anyone who love Chinese Cuisine! Pros: Everything Cons: Parking is a little difficult but worth it more

Great Value and Great Food 5/6/2008

This will be one of my really good value restaurants in the cities. Its a nice cozy place, great food and prices are very reasonable. One of the most authentic tastes you can have as i have traveled to Hongkong and most parts of Asia. Service is great too and lots to choose from their menu. Going to the restrooms is a bit tricky though, its like a maze. Pros: great plate dinners and combo meals, entrees taste authentic and prices are really reasonable more

It's really not what it used to be 4/5/2008

I used to frequent the Wok all the time years ago. I have great memories about their sweet and sour soup. It used to be pungent and spicy. I've gone back several times looking for my favorite soup, but they've changed it. It's sad. Pros: Late hours Cons: parking; sweet and sour soup more

Pleasantly surprised considering the previous reviews 2/1/2008

This was my first time at Village Wok. The menu was huge...which makes me wonder if everything is made fresh? With that in mind I ordered something off the first page of entrees thinking that would be the freshest. I had the mango shrimp. The shrimp was rubbery. Not very flavorful and not very hot. However, the people that I was with had much better items, including the sweet and sour chicken and mock duck. These were fried, so I guess if I braved it again, I would get something fried. Pros: Good fried food Cons: steer clear of most other items. more

Eww.... 10/31/2007

I haven't been in there since college (3 years ago) but I tired some left over chicken from there and it was still terrible. The food is disgusting. I don't care if it's cheap. Pros: Cheap Cons: Disgusting Food more

The Most Disgusting Food Ever 7/19/2007

My friends and I used to go to the Village Wok, however, after our last experience, never again!!! The girls and I decided to celebrate graduation and the end of the semester. I ordered a Roast Pork and Oyster dish, which I asked the server about ? she said, ?the roast pork is good, it?s a very popular item.? When the waitress brought out my meal, it was a plate of pork fat and fishy oysters. When I told her that the pork fat wouldn?t work for me, she said, ?Asian people like a lot of fat, and that?s just how it comes.? I was astounded at her incompetence, she could have mentioned the fatty part before I ordered the dish, and making sweeping generalizations about Asian people was just tacky. I shared my friend?s food because I was hungry. Later that evening both my friend and I had severe stomach cramps. Don?t eat here! Cons: incompetent servers more

Avoid it. 4/25/2007

It may be good if you are lucky enough to not get sick. I got sick after eating there, and know others that have too. more

Bad experience! DO NOT EAT HERE! 4/14/2007

I have had some bad experience with the wok. Let's just say that they aren't as clean as they should be. Try Hong Kong Noodles instead! more

Best Chinese? 8/2/2006

Honestly, all the reviewers must live in Dinkytown because there is no way The Wok can be on any ""best of"" lists. The food is okay, nothing special, but I suppose almost anything tastes good after you have been drinking all night and your standards have dropped. Pros: Late nights Cons: Food, decor more

Great place, great service 5/18/2006

The service here is excellent, and the food is great. They have a wide selection, including vegetarian dishes. Pros: Great food, Great service, Wide selection Cons: Sometimes busy, Decor a bit run down more

So what if the ambience sucks... 4/21/2006

I'm a college student and work at the hospital nearby. I have found the food there nearly always awesome, the service great, and the hours also good. My first visit I was doubtful of the speed of service because 2 groups of 12 came in behind me, but somehow the food was quickly served all around the same time! Try the iron hot spicy beef (my favorite), sweet and sour soup, and the chinese broccoli, and you'll have a meal for 2 under $20. Pros: good food, inexpensive, friendly service Cons: parking, ambience more

One of the best 2/23/2006

I love the wok. Food is great. Price is great. Parking sucks, though. With this many great choices and such great prices, you can't beat this one. more

Simply the absolute best! 5/15/2005

If you are looking for the best, the best chinese food at the best price, look no further. This is it! Everyone i have sent here over the years has said the same thing. Try it and I'm sure you'll agree. Pros: Best food, Best price more
