Utopia Salon - CLOSED

When I lived in Chicago 20+ years ago, I had the kind of salon experience where I could always trust that they would make me look fabulous. However since I moved to the Bay Area I have failed to find my Salon of choice. I kept "trying out stylists" with not much luck. I could not find someone who could be consistent in making me look good so that I would want to come back for more. I waited way too long for my turn to have a great stylist/colorist in the Bay Area that would give me what I wanted/needed in an updated and chic look for my tresses. Finally, I have found that special talent in a wonderful oasis called Utopia Salon in San Francisco. It is both a retreat and a rejuvenator. Utopia and Len H. have given me back my "hair confidence". Len's ability to know just what is needed in both cut and color has given my hair freedom to be beautiful every day with very little effort. For the first time I have people stopping me to tell me that they love my hairstyle and the healthy look of my hair. Kudos to Len and his very capable team. I am a Fan for Life. Deb G more

I took the service on my winter trip to SF city. Billy is my stylist. He?s absolutely professional and plus, he is a very interesting and nice man. Before that, I had a hairdo which I think fit me, however, now I think I have much better hairdo than the old one. Since had the service on Jan. 2nd, it?s kind of a new year present, and I would love to have it as a wonderful begging. If you are planning to have a new hairdo in SF and still doing the salon hunting, I would love to recommend Billy in Utopia salon in SF. Have money and have fun. more

I've been searching long and hard for years to find someone that I can trust to cut and color my hair the way I want it to be. I found these guys on this site actually, so I thought I'd "give back"! No doubt the reviews here are very accurate. I got color by Maritza and cut by Len. I was extremely satisfied about the finished product of both services. I admire my "new 'do" in the mirror often. :) They were all friendly and sociable, and the "atmosphere" couldn't be more relaxing. My services were both ON TIME. That's virtually unheard of in the hair styling industry! Anyway, A+ for these guys!!!! Pros: Great atmosphere, timely servies as per scheduled appt. Cons: None more

My wife and I have been seeing Billy Aldrich for years at the other salon he worked at (77 Maiden Lane) when he said he was leaving to go to another salon, we were a little bit skeptical. Once we got to his other salon, we loved his new salon (Utopia) right from the start! It has a relaxed atmosphere, we were greeted by an extremely friendly front desk person and we were made to feel welcome! Billy is a personable, down to earth, and friendly guy who delivers what he says he will, EXCELLENT work. My wife sees Billy for her haircuts and Body Waves(he is a perm and Body Wave specialist) and I see him for my haircuts. We have never been disappointed with ANY service Billy has given us! Kendra is an extremely talented stylists. She's careful to be sure we agree on what to do before she starts cutting. I felt at ease. Enjoyed a drink while she gave a haircut that I ABSOLUTELY LOVE! I also enjoyed the atmosphere of the salon- nice staff! Pros: Easy to get in Cons: Parking more

I have found an amazing hair stylist in TONY at Utopia...and I feel lucky because it's hard to find a true professional that will consistently give you the perfect haircut ! TONY has exceptional style and is able to truly listen to my requests...he's also fun and easy going and he makes you feel comfortable! His haircuts are fun to style but they look even great with low maintence care! I've never been disappointed and I always get tons of compliments from friends and co-workers! I have been seeing Tony Jones as my hair stylist since 1998. I have followed him to where he now styles at Utopia Salon. The combination of Utopia's location, great services, and Tony are simply put, the best. Tony is not only a wonderful person but an awesome stylist. He not only possess great skills as a stylist but also as a colorist. I would recommend him and Utopia Salon to any and everyone. Len, the managing partner, has put together a great environment for his employees as well as the salon's clients. It was time for a new job, new city, new look, so after a google search I came up with Utopia. I needed a late apointment a few weeks before Christmas, and they were very accomodating. Also, it's great to be able to book online! Since I arrived pretty late in the afternoon for a cut and color, they were running a little late, but no dispair - a nice glass of wine and nice surroundings and a great new cut and color. Maritza did a fabulous job, and when I told Paco that he could have his way with my hair (after all, it will always grow out) I've decided that I (and all my friends) love the results. I was a little skeptical when a friend referred me to a new salon(I was relatively happy with the one I was going to on Maiden Lane) but then I went and saw Len Handeland! I have two other co-workers that also see Len and they have always been happy with his work, so I decided after my other (long time) stylist took a sudden "mysterious" leave of absense and left me without a contact or even a referral of who I should see instead at the other salon I was so upset I decided not to go back there! I was so happy with what Len did. He made me feel welcome and comfortable, he looked at my hair, analyzed it(mentioned it needed some help, product wise and color wise) and performed his magic! I also had the pleasure of treating myself to a manicure and pedicure with Utopia's manicurist(Ann) she also seemed very knowledgeable and made my nails look better than they have ever looked! Then Len gave me a cut that I still get compliments on! (it has already been 3 weeks!) and I go back in 3 weeks for a follow up appointment. To summarize, why go to another salon just to be treated like another head in a hair factory?! This salon is different, relaxed, yet upscale and the place was hopping when I was there, full of energy, laughter, and people that wanted to be there. The artwork which is modern, was pleasant enough(I even thought of purchasing a piece!) maybe next time. Thanks Len! see you and Ann in 3 weeks!!! Can't wait. Pros: Great haircuts and color! My wife first started seeing Len Handeland at Utopia Salon about a year ago. She found him on line through a search engine, before that time she was always unhappy with her hair. She was always nagging at me to get a "decent" haircut, and for me to stop going to see my barber and to see Len instead, I said what could this guy possibly do with my hair, I mean let's face it, most stylists know how to cut women's hair, but men's haircuts?! Man, was I wrong! This guy is amazing! This is the best haircut I have ever gotten! Thanks Len! My wife has always been happy with the work that Len does(she is not naturally blond, but Len makes her appear that way!) so guys(and gals) if you want to experience someone that not only knows how to enhance a person's haircolor(thats where the blond part comes in!) and someone that also knows how to cut both men's hair and women's hair, then go see this incredible guy! He is funny, can hold a decent conversation, and makes people feel welcomed and relaxed! Len, I (we)will be back! Thanks Man! Oh and...the salon is nice too! Fabulous color = Maritza!! Sassy haircut = Kenny!! Relaxing salon atmoshpere = Utopia I?m not really one to write reviews but for Maritza and Kenny, I just had to? I?ve recently moved back to the Bay Area from Maryland and I needed a change with my look and was searching for a new salon and a new stylist? I decided to take a chance with Utopia Salon since they came up as on of the top rated salons on City Search. I read some of the reviews and saw a lot of praises for Kenny and Maritza that I just had to see what I was missing? I started my day at the salon with Ms. Maritza. She?s very friendly and we instantly clicked! She looked at my hair and just new what color would be right (I didn?t even see the color chart!) and I just I could trust her judgment. Let me just say that she is good at what she does ? color is rich and perfect for my skin tone and just really good color! It?s been almost a month and it?s still looking fresh and I still get lots of compliments! Then from Martiza?s chair to Kenny?s? Kenny looked at the shape of my face and my height, went through his drawer of hairstyles and voila! picked out this sassy cut that I love! ? he just knew what would fit. He paid attention to what I was looking for in a cut, something that I can tie back if I needed to?and did his magic. I usually look down to see how much hair gets cut but I couldn?t help but watch Kenny do what he does best! I?ve gotten so many compliments how well the cut framed my face. It was such a great experience I highly recommend this styling duo (Tell them Mell sent you!!!) I've recommended all my pals to switch - I even told my friends back in MD and in the East Coast that if they ever come to SF for a visit that they must get their hair done with Martiza and Kenny! Billy has been cutting my hair for several years now and he's never disappointed me once. Whether I have specific ideas about how I want my hair cut or even if I haven't a clue, Billy creates styles that compliment my features. I always walk away from my visits with him feeling like a million dollars when I cause heads to turn as I walk by. Thanks Billy! You're the best! more

What can I say - Billy is the BEST. I've been going to Billy for the last 15 years and must say NO one does a better job than Billy. Whether he's giving me the last style/trend cuts or taking my super long hair (from my waist) to super short (neck length) or anywhere in between, I've received nothing but complements on my cut time after time. He is just simply the BEST. I drive an hour to the city just to get my hair done by him because no one can do it better than Billy when it comes to style and cuts! After having read review after review on this salon called Utopia, I decided to schedule an appointment with Maritza for my color and highlights and Kenny Berk for my haircut. I was told that Kenny was off on the day that I chose my appointment, at that time I chose another stylist(I think he is the owner as well?) named Len. I was delighted with both! Martitza did an amazing job on my color and highlights and the cut that Len gave me is one of the best I have ever gotten! Thank you!!!! I love this salon! I do plan on going back and the nice thing about this salon is I feel confident that if a particular stylist or colorist is not available that everyone at the salon is so talented that they will hook you up with the right person. I did however find parking to be a bit of a challenge(but then again it is the December Holidays in Union Sqaure!) and there are plenty of parking garages around the area. All I can say is ...don't walk, but run to see these two amazing people, I know it says on the salon's web site about the color and cut team of Maritza and Kenny, but it is reassuring to me, to know that everyone appears to be extremely talented(which speaks about the salon!) Who knows maybe next time I will try Kenny for my haircut(hopefully on a day he is working!) but if not, then I know I have found a gem in Maritza and Len! I went to Utopia once and got a very good haircut, but it wasn't my style. Couldn't fault the stylist, as I told him to do whatever he thought best. I went back a second time with something more specific in mind. I brought in several pictures and said I wanted a shorter version of picture A. I loved picture B, but knew I couldn't pull it off and said as much (I brought it in for length reference). Well, I ended up with picture B, and not a very good version at that. One side was longer than the other, there was quite a bit more layering on one side than the other, and I had random longer bits hanging down at the bottom in the back. As lovely as the people were at the salon, I won't be returning. more

I recently moved here from Wahington D.C. After having gone to one of the best salon's in our nations capital I got VERY spoiled. I recently started a job here as a consultant, and one of my clients came in with her hair looking amazing! Naturally I asked her where did you go? The answer....Utopia Salon. My client had her hair done with Maritza and Kenny, so naturally I called the salon(I was also told you could book on line!) got lucky and went in to see them, I must admit, my hair looks better now than it has ever looked(even better than when my stylist back in Washington was doing it!...But please don't tell him!!!) I love my hair! I love this salon! Utopia you really live up to your name! My appointment began on time(a rarity in the "salon world" or doctors appointment, dentist, etc!) I was greeted warmly(by both the stylists/colorist and reception) and received warm smiles and compliments even from some of the other stylists there! That NEVER happened back in Washington! I have found my salon and it is Utopia! I will be back!!!! Can't wait! Pros: Appointment began on time!, on line booking, skill level, warm friendly people, Wine! Cons: Tips cannot be left on credit card(be sure to ask) that's it! more
