Over-Packed!! 12/9/2008

I must admit this venue had great music. But it is too common of a place. I saw so many people I knew from in state and out of state all packed into the building tight...barely any room to dance or chill in V.I.P. Being there felt like I was in the basement enjoying someone's house party where they charged them at the door. Early arrival is suggested because the price doubles hour by hour...and its definitely not worth it. more

2nd Visit: Nothing Short of a Nightmare 6/9/2007

The first time a friend and I went to Cherry Red (in Jan 07) we enjoyed ourselves. The club wasn't over crowded and the caliber of crowd was decent. Everyone was civilized. Pretty good experience overall? My second visit to Cherry Red (June 07) was one of the worst club experiences that I have ever had. I was there for my sister?s birthday get together and apparently she had some sort of special reservation/party package (I believe private party package that is posted on their website). When we arrived not only did we have a hell of a time getting in (arguing back and forth with THE MOST IGNORANT STAFF ON THE PLANET), we paid a high cover, and there was NO OPEN BAR PACKAGE as was arranged with the individuals that we spoke to 3 weeks in advance?ONLY OVERPRICED BOTTLE SERVICE! I would HARDLY CALL IT SERVICE. The girl that brought us the bottles filled out glasses up once sat the bottles in an ice bucket and disappeared for rest of the night. There was a 30% gratuity charge tacked onto the bill for someone to do nothing but sit a bottle of overpriced alcohol in an ice bucket at your table. Deplorable!!! We were offered a ?conditional? bottle of Champagne ?on the house? to compensate for the horrendous drama that we experienced, but only after we purchased our own bottle of course (What a F*@#ing joke!!!). The place was jam packed. It took me about 8 minutes (No Exaggeration!!!) to walk from the back of the club to the restroom. In regards to the crowd there was a totally different atmosphere the second time around. NOT ONE OUNCE OF CLASS IN THE ENTIRE BUILDING. Club/Party promoters have brought a totally different crowd on the scene. I am positive that Cherry Red will not be positing photos of the crowd that I was surrounded by on their website. Bottom Line, I will NEVER PATRONIZE THIS VENUE AGAIN!!! Pros: The DJ was decent Cons: Service, Atmosphere, Value!!! more

I think its called Fresh Fridays or something.. 10/1/2006

Yeah, i'm not sure what night that last person went on, but I KNOW its not Friday. All I know is that the crowd is pretty diverse and the music is mostly hiphop, top 40 stuff like on the radio, and some hard house or new wave I guess. There wasn't any line but the crowd was pretty packed. I went there and had 30 bucks in my pocket and still got tanked. The promo company said that if you said their name at the door, that there wouldn't be any cover and they were right. The staff and promoters were pretty hospitable to everyone, and I came with and lots of other people. I ...think.. the name was Show Spec or Showspec Entertainment, but not 100% sure. There was buttloads of bar room and I didn't have any problems getting my drinks pretty fast. and they had pretty cheap deals too. I don't know what the other prices were but I had jager bombs and my friends had patron, and each was only like $5 each, so not bad I guess. The beer was average, $4 and the bathrooms were a little small. I'd go back on a Friday night. can't vouch for the rest of the nights. more

NASTY! 9/16/2006

I went to Cherry Red with a friend who was invited there for a party. I go out almost every weekend all over downtown Chicago and I had NEVER even heard of Cherry Red before which was a bad sign from the start. The bouncers were nice and at 11:00 PM there was absolutely no waiting in line outside and barely packed inside. The bartenders need a dress code! They need to dress up and not wear their dirty baggy jeans with old ripped t-shirts! The drinks were not even alcohol filled, just pure ice! There is no wait for the bathrooms which was good but once inside it is filthy dirty! The music on a Saturday night is pure rap & hip hop where you can't even dance to! I even asked the DJ if he could play just one dance song for my friends & I and he rudely said NO! The crowd was VERY unattractive and nobody talks to anyone! It was boring!!! We ended up leaving early, around 2AM and the place was still not packed and once outside not one person waiting in line! Bottom line, the place needs to be shut down and remodeled or something! I will NEVER go back! NASTY PLACE!!! Don't go there! Pros: No waiting in lines. Cons: EVERYTHING! more

Great Place... 1/12/2006

I went 3 months ago, and it was packed, but the atmosphere was very friendly. I had great couch seats overlooking the dance floor. It has two rooms, and each room plays a variety of music. Although it was extremely busy up at the bar, the bartender would still manage to serve you right away. It is a great place to hang out with friends and have conversations. Plus, i'm going back tonight... more

Nice place 1/21/2004

Went there with some friends a few weeks ago. Nice little place, but wished we had better seats than by the door. Drinks weren't too good. Great mixed crowd and the people there were great and friendly. Nice place to meet people. Music was pretty good at times. Would definitely go back again. Parking was far and hard to find. They had valet, but no price on the sign. Pros: Friendly people, Atmosphere Cons: Parking more

POP GOES THE CHERRY 1/16/2003

I very much enjoyed the bar, there was a mix for people there that gave cherry red something better then most bars. to look out on the dance floor and see so many people of different ages and races enjoying each others company brought a smile to my face and made me want to get out there and dance dance dance! more

Best place on Thursday Nights! 1/11/2003

Cherry Red is one of the best clubs in Chicago simply because they offer a quality atmosphere for young professionals to meet people and dance to great music. The service is excellent, and on Thursday nights it's definitely the place to be. The drinks are half price and the crowd is hot! Pros: Great Crowd, Meet people, Dance flooor is great more

No bang for your buck... 11/10/2002

I hosted a party there and they told me they would reserve an area for us, for 50 people until 10:30. The second we got there they took away the ropes even though it was only about 10pm and only 15 people were there. Cherry Red is expensive for a bar in lakeview, $3 to check your coat on top of the cover and drinks that are the same as downtown prices. Plus the bar gets way too crowded. more

Private Party Patron 9/16/2002

I recently hosted a party there, and one of the most common statements made by guests was how polite the bartenders were. I did not come across any that were exceptionally rude, or ruder than other bartenders in the city. I also received exceptional service from my contact that helped me plan the party. A great first impression Pros: Dance Floor, Good location Cons: Crowded, Younger crowd more

Just bad staff 9/2/2002

I don't understand why people think they are something special, just because they serve drinks. more

Don't Bother... 8/5/2002

Save your money and spare yourself the frustration of having to deal with the rudest staff in the city. Pros: Location Cons: Staff - RUDE!!! more

Verry Good 7/29/2002

Cherry Red offers a little bit of everything for everyone. It's great if you want to dance, with a petite dance floor, it's great if you want to lounge with comfy couches. Cherry Red has all the right things! Pros: fun people there Cons: Cover, No airconditioning more

Hot and Sweaty Night 7/25/2002

I was at this bar last Saturday night. I got there around 11pm. It wasn't horribly crowded, but it was so hot in there I thought I was going to die. There were a lot of fat girls dancing in skimpy outfits who looked no older than 18. I spent $7 on a Red Bull and Vodka. The price wouldn't have been so bad if the drinks weren't served in Dixie cups!!! I won't go back this bar sucks. It's also in the middle of nowhere so you can't even escape to another bar without t finding a cab first!!! more

scary scary 7/17/2002

I feel like they might bus kids in from the suburbs here. The place has potential but needs to fugure out if its a bar? lounge? club? Gets too crowded also and the drinks are pricey for their size. more

Editorial
  • The Scene
Red lights reflect on the faces of barely-legal Lincoln Parkers. They wear jeans and haven't yet shunned Coors for cosmos--no specialty drinks here anyway--and they don't mind that the floor is filthy and duct-taped in spots. They sit and stand in small groups in sectioned-off spaces throughout the large bar. Couches, chaise lounges and cocktail tables give patrons plenty of options to park it or just toss their coats as they hit the raised dance floor by the floor-to-ceiling windows.

    The Draw
The color theme is a little overdone, but a reminder this club has the same owners as Joy Blue, a more established sister bar on Southport. Cherry Red tries hard to hip it up with psychedelic projections and splashy murals. It succeeds better with skillful DJs and a coordinated percussionist with drums, maracas and other Caribbean-music equipment.
