If this store ever closes down, I might cry real tears. The employees are very helpful and treat you like family. They have a huge variety and their prices are generally better that any competitors in town or on the web. If you live in the area and haven't stopped in, you MUST! You are missing out on one of the area's best treasures. Btw- top floor has a clearance section you have to cruise while you are there. Love, love, love it!!!! more

This place is a stink hole. The only reason they get 1 star is because they seem to be a few bucks cheaper than other stores. Good luck w/ that though. Once you walk out the door your on your own. Do yourself a favor and buy at a reputable store like REI. Also, if you do insist on shopping here, make sure you take a shower after you leave. more

After reading the online reviews for this store I was skeptical to go in there. Yesterday we were in the area and I went in there anyways. I thought the staff was really friendly and their selection of jackets was huge. I'll go back. more

These guys are the best around when it comes to ski gear! Great selection, knowledgeable, and very helpful. The owner Rob is a fantastic guy and really knows how to run a shop (the store has been in business for over 50 years) Ask for Dave Jaffee and he'll take good care of you! Highly recommended! more

We were asked whether we were "finding our way", "get along" or "need any help" by about every one of the -felt- 20 sales persons. Before entering the lower floor they took our backpacks away... obviously to keep us from stealing a tent (?), backpack (?) or anything. It felt strange since I haven't witnessed something like that so far in the US and we were not a second unattended and the only costumers in the store at the time. more

I have bought two snowboards (1 complete set-up) from this store. The customer service every time was non-existent to fair most of the time. I had to bring in the first board I bought because it was delaming within two weeks of buying it. The sales associate demanded to know "what I had hit, what I had done to the board" to make it delam. Nothing, no impact damage was along the edge to give anybody this idea. The last time I was in that store I was looking at getting a new pair of snowboard boots. I eventually got the attention of 1 out the 3 sales staff standing just a few feet from the boot wall to ask a question about the different models. The snide response I got was enough that I have vowed never to step foot in the store again. If they think they are too good for my money, they're probably right, there's too many other places to spend it in Portland without getting treated like crap. Ordered a jacket for X-mas - paid extra for on time delivery...it was the wrong size - when trying to return for correct size - I was treated terribly. First time I called, was told to call back on Monday, called back on Monday and put on hold for 1/2 hour, finally someone answered only to be told someone would call me back. Four (4) hours later - after no call, I called back and finally talked to someone who just didn't want to help. All they wanted was for me to send back and hit me up for the re-stocking fee. In a city that embraces the outdoor lifestyle and all that entails, US Outdoor stands out as the largest non-corporate gear retailer in town, not to mention the way it sticks out amongst its downtown Broadway neighbors, with low key staff and comfortable atmosphere. Compared to REI, USO has a stronger selection of upper end product within the various categories, and prices are competitive with other gear shops, and certainly better than at the brand showcase stores around town. Upon visiting the store, it's hard not to be taken back by the sheer volume of product in those 3 floors; the snowboard department recently expanded and moved the second floor to handle the incredible amount of boards, boots, and enough jackets and schwag to sink a ship. The website is thorough, and a solid way to pre-game before dropping into the store, as you can see everything available and in stock, and be prepared to find what you're looking for when you arrive. Alternatively, you can go in blind, and one of the local outdoor experts will be more than happy to offer their opinion on gear, not to mention the best breaks on the coast, the best times of year to head to the mountain, and what nights to visit the climbing walls. Oh, and given the current economy, I should mention the sales annex on the second floor, which is chock-a-block with solid deals on last year's gear, which, unless you're a steez-obsessed snowboarder, should work fine. I went in ready to buy a new snowboard setup but didn't want to interupt the staff from their eating and joking on the sales floor. While looking at all the boards there were probably 3 or 4 employees( friends?) standing back with no interest in offering assitance or advice. I have purchased gear from them in the past so I knew how the business operates but my most recent experience was completely unacceptable. I know nothing about snowboards, but I know alot about dudes. And the dudes in the US Outdoor store snowboard department are handsome. So handsome and so helpful. I went into Outdoor to buy a new board the other day and was blown away at how knowledgable the staff was about every product in the snowboard department (Especially that hunk George). The only problem I had was that I was a little distracted by the staff's handsome-ness. But overall I would say that the snowboard department staff is incredibly helpful. They even sold me a new pair of snowboard pants when I was attempting to pick George up. I think they miss understood when I said "I'm looking to get into your pants." But that's okay because the pants fit great and I love my new K2 snowboard. When I moved to Portland this was the first place I went to for my snowboarding gear needs, and I have never felt the need to shop anywhere else. They had everything I was looking for, and the staff were able to answer all my questions without any trouble. It's easy to tell that the people selling you the gear are up on the mountain on the weekends, or out at smith rock climbing, or surfing at the coast....you get the idea. Everything seems reasonably priced, and they always have last years stuff on sale so you can find some great deals. The thing I didn't find out for a while is that they have a website that is live with their inventory in store, so now I always check to see what new stuff they get in and then go down to the store to check it out. I would recommend this place for the three reasons listed in the title of my review. more
