Best

The crickets are actually pretty tasty. Fun place to eat for sure!

Worst

I used to think that it was amusing with decent food. Now, I find it tiresome with mediocre food, served with no enthusiasm whatsoever.

great nasi goreng 11/8/2006

hard to believe a place that has great indonesian, thai, korean, and chinese food! We always get the mongolian beef with sesame buns and nasi goreng. plus they have nice wines by the glass and an amazing view of the santa monica airport. can get very crowded on weekends but if the bar stools in front of the kitchen are open, take 'em! You'll get to see an entire catfish battered and fried plus 5 woks going at once! more

Nifty lunch spot 7/1/2005

You can't beat the view. Admittedly, the view of the Santa Monica Airport was weird, but it was just one more mismatched piece sewn into this clever hodgepodge of a restaurant. Unfortunately, they were out of fresh crickets at lunch, so we started with ants on fried potato strips. They tasted, well, anty, with a dash of vinegar. Not much flavor, really, but they meant easily earned bragging rights. My main course was the Szechuan Scallops plate - a hearty serving of fresh scallops cooked in a savory sauce. Tasty. Like previous reviewers have noted, the place got a little noisy - even though we were only there at lunch time. Still, the dining area was nicely laid out, and the service was attentive. Pros: variety of dishes, exotic dishes Cons: noisy more

nice service, good food 3/10/2005

Food was good, make sure you get the bread rolls warm. Don't go if you don't like singing during dinner. I went with a group of girls and we had lots of fun. Two gals came unexpectedly and the restaurant was very accomodating about making room for them even though it was super-crowded Friday night. Pros: good food, house wine Cons: difficult parking, long wait more

Great for a gathering of friends 12/5/2003

I stepped into Typhoon not knowing what to expect and a friendly server greeted me and asked if I had reservations. I didn't, and he invited us to sit at the bar while we waited. Ten minutes later, a nice atmosphere, comfortable chairs, and excellent food awaited us as we enjoyed the evening. Some details I noticed were that the wait service was a little slow at 9pm Friday night, and large groups of six to ten people or so were clustered around the restaurant. Definitely too loud for a quiet date, but great for a gathering of friends. Order a few dishes and share, as enjoying just one dish here would be a disservice to yourself. Pros: Great free parking, Nice atmosphere, Excellent food Cons: Slow wait service, Loud, Cheap-looking menu more

Surprised by tasty dishes... 3/31/2003

My wife and I had an event in Santa Monica, so I solicited restaurant recommendations. Two friends recommended Typhoon. I checked out the reviews here. The bad reviews were extreme and scared me a bit, but I trusted my friends' opinion of good food. The event fell through, but the dinner salvaged our evening. We had the BBQ chicken, fried squid (read calamari), and Bah-Mi (Thai noodles). I would recommend them all, especially the Bah-Mi, which was lightly sweet and sour with savory seafood flavors. The people are nice. Next time I'm in Santa Monica, I'd definitely consider dining at Typhoon again. Pros: Tasty food, Good parking more

My favorite restaurant in Santa Monica 3/14/2003

It is a travesty that a couple of obviously insane people have brought down the user rating of this restaurant so horribly. All I can tell you is, do not listen to these people. I have a very SHORT list of places I can honestly say I've never had anything short of *excellent* at, and this is one of them. Add to that the unbeatable ambience (if you like airplanes, which I do), and you have one of the greatest restaurants in L.A. Go there. I demand it. Pros: Food., View., Drinks. Cons: T'ain't none. more

BEST NIGHT SPOT IN L.A. 3/4/2003

As an L.A.native I have been everywhere, but I keep going back to Typhoon. I've never had the bad experiences other reviewers have had and I go there a lot. Management always takes care of any problem and they try very hard. They know they are not perfect, but their food is always unique and well prepared. High marks to the wait staff. It's the most unique food in Los Angeles and among the best on the west side. My wife and I never tire of it. Pros: Food, Sunset, Bar Cons: sometimes crowded, noisy when busy more

TERRIBLE 11/6/2002

This restaraunt is completely over-rated - the food is second rate and uninspired, despite it's delusions of grandeur, and ridiculously self impressed. Do yourself a favor and go eat somewhere else - ANYwhere else! more
