I've always enjoyed coming to The Triple Door. It's an intimate venue that used to be a burlesque theater. The service is great and has a very attentive wait staff!
I have a few issues, however. To say that this place is cozy is an understatement. What would normally be considered a two person table is set for four. This can be uncomfortable for persons of larger than average girth I'm sorry to say. So do arrive early as it is first come first serve seating.
The food as a rule is not elegantly presented, it either fills the plate to overflowing or it is just piled in one spot with little care.
Our meal this most recent evening included appetizers, entrées and dessert. We ordered crab cakes and lamb kabobs to start. The crab cakes were delicious, not the usual Dungeness overpowered by bell pepper, but delicate and tasty. The lamb kabobs were juicy, but placed in a pile with a cucumber relish off to one side, not at all delightful in presentation, but recommended for flavor. Yum!
The entrées were puzzling. The duck plate was filled to overflowing with doughy buns like those found in Korean dishes, a sparse amount of lettuce, duck, rice and an orange dipping sauce. It seemed a bit overwhelming. The "phoenix and dragon" seemed to be the opposite. Though the plate was hot the two small scallops were lukewarm, the shrimp were not sparse, but the mixture of these and the above average peanut sauce were just dolloped on the plate. There was a tiny tomatillo divided by four and some inedible bamboo. This was accompanied by four small unsweetened pancakes. Apparently vegetables are negligible at The Triple Door. I found it odd that the duck came with rice and buns, but the scallops and shrimp came with these dinky pancakes. Pancakes must be popular with the chef because they come with many of the entrées.
For dessert we had the Berry Cobbler and the Molten Lava Chocolate Cake. The cobbler went down so fast that I didn't get a chance to sneak a taste. The chocolate cake itself tasted more like flour than chocolate. There were supposed to be additional flavors of wasabi and ginger, but these were indiscernible. The lava part was interesting, but forgettable. However the pistachio ice cream and the raspberry sauce were quite yummy. I could have gone with just the ice cream and been satisfied if this had been an option.
This was my third or fourth visit to The Triple Door and I recall seeing many of the entrées before. There doesn't seem to be much of a change up and I'm not quite sure what they have against vegetables with their entrées. I do recall that there were some vegetarian dishes however.
Please do come and enjoy the show. The performers are varied and you're sure to have fun. Don't be afraid of the menu, but if you are a frequent visitor you may become bored with the selections.
My rating is a 3 more for the food, the entertainment rates much higher say a 4.5.
