I beg of you. Those who are thinking about signing with Topaz. DONNNNTTTT!! Don't do it. This company is run by unethical, scum-bag, dirty, filthy, grimy, sht-for-brains a-holes. I have been here for two years and can't begin to explain how bad this place is. The ""super"" is a fat lazy piece of sht who spends most of his time across the street talking to his buddies. When they repaint, they do it in 5 minutes; leaving your doorknobs and mirrors covered with paint. When you try to call the super, he never picks up the phone, and even when he says that he will fix it, he never does. The company adds no value to your apartment yet they will still charge you more money/month at the end of the year. Please don't rent from them. They deserve to go out of business. I will make it my mission that these a-holes go out of business. more

Illegal Heat continues with Topaz 7/11/2011

I have been struggling with Topaz for over 5 years to get proper heating in my apartment. I bought 3 thermometers last winter, and they all registered that my apartment was a full 5 degrees colder than the legal standard set by the City. Topaz sent a contractor to our apartment, who told us we needed new windows to fix the problem. Topaz said they cannot give us new windows. The contractor said we could remove the air conditioner to try and improve the situation. We live in a duplex loft, and we cannot reach the air conditioner except by very tall ladder. It is extremely inconvenient to change the filter in there, let alone take the whole unit out. When Topaz recently increased our rent, I told them the increase was unacceptable unless they fix the heating problem. They told me that the contractor said we ""refused to remove our air conditioner"" and that is the source of our problem. Remove my air conditioner? I have lived in NYC my entire life and I do not know anyone who has to remove and reinstall their air conditioner every year in order to get proper heating. I am so sick of this management company doing everything possible to avoid taking responsibilities for their problems. The only reason to live in a building run by Topaz is if you love the neighborhood THAT much. Otherwise, there is a laundry list of problems with this company that make them one of the worst in the city. Fly infestations in the basement, constantly broken front doors and goes on and on. Beware. more

I live in the 52 E 13th building and have to say that if it wasn't for the awesome location of living near union square, I would move in an instant. The management company is rude and they don't do anything. The super doesn't pick up the phone because for some reason, he likes to hang out across the street. The building is a piece of crap, the elevator is slow, and they don't provide any improvements. The people that they hired to work in the building have no courtesy at all. For example, one instance was when I had been in a rush to catch a train. I pressed the elevator button in advance before I went to lock my door (I do this because the elevator takes an eternity.) Take into consideration that one of the workers saw that I was in a rush and actually SAW me press the button. As I went to lock the door, the worker walked into the elevator and pressed the close button as quickly as he could. Blatant disregard like this is very common among Topaz workers and it is a true reflection of how terrible a management company they are. Obviously, by the previous comments and ratings that have been displayed before me, it is clear that Topaz just doesn't care. There is nothing good to say about them. Please do not rent from this company!!!! They don't deserve any money and I kind of hope that they go out of business. I know once my lease is up, I will be gone. I wouldnt even give them a star but you have to on this site. Pros: That these people aren't doing real important work. Cons: Too many to list more

ABSOLUTELY AWFUL!!! Do NOT rent from this company! 2/26/2010

This is my third apartment in NYC, and this is by FAR the worst management company I have ever witnessed! I read a few reviews before we signed our lease, but I thought there was no way they could be true. Unfortunately, the reviews do not even do them justice! I am aware that there are little problems with every apartment--however, in every previous apartment I have lived in, the management took care of the problems in a timely manner. Topaz would either push us away and tell us the boss wasn't in so no decisions could be made, or just not deal with us completely. Most recently, our patio overflowed and ruined everything. The management blamed it on us, saying we should have cleaned our drains and they would not pay for the damage. What they offered, instead of paying for the cleaning of the thousands of dollars in rug damage, was $10 worth of quarters so we could take the day off from work and do laundry to try and salvage some of the clothing that was ruined. Even if you absolutely love the apartment, do not rent from them. more

Bad. Just bad. Even for NYC. 11/24/2009

When I moved in I spent a day cleaning dust off the walls and floor from a recent bathroom renovation. The front security door has graffiti all over it, the second security door doesn't even lock and has a crack through it. The company does absolutely nothing to maintain the building (instead of replacing broken tiles on the ground floor, they filled them in with concrete, the light on the 3rd floor landing was not working for 3 months making it almost completely dark at night). Pros: Nothing. Cons: Everything. more

WORST!! 10/13/2009

This is the worst management ever!! My outlets have been out of service for close to a month, my entire living room ceiling is leaking, my bathroom light isn't functioning and there is a very very bad mouse problem!!! I have called the owner and he hung up on me. I called 311 but to no avail. I am at my wits end. I am currently looking for a new apartment. This is my first apartment and it's been a absolutely horrible experience. I wish there was a no stars option. Pros: NO PROS Cons: EVERYTHING IS CON more

I've known this building since it was built about 8 years ago, it has since aged about 50 years! The management company is simply bad, everything is broken or about to break. more

If you have the option not to live under their management - trust me - don't. I lived in one apartment under their management for 3 years and it was the worst experience ever. They have worthless employees who fail to do their jobs. They penalize tenants for their lazy efforts to repair the building's problems. more

Awful Management 6/3/2008

I have lived in New York City my entire life and have never had such a horrible Management Company. Nevermind that it takes forever to have anything done because the landlord is unreachable, the people who work at the company are rude and condescending - unless they need to get into your apartment (while you're out of town) then they will harass you! The building had a pest problem and I never saw the supposed exterminator that came once a month - not once! When you call to complain, or ask a question: it is YOUR fault, YOUR problem, they're so unhelpful and then basically expect you to rent out the apartment for them! I was continually expected to be available for their realtor (who was very nice). The only consolation was they didn't argue with me about getting my security deposit - but it's been 3 weeks and they keep saying it's not their problem and ""tough"" when I ask where the check is! I would never live in another one of their buildings. more
