Lisa has done my hair (color and styling), makeup, and eyebrows. Everything she has done has been amazing. The color was absolutely perfect - I had some blonde highlights that I wanted to cover up and she matched my hair exactly. When she has done my hair and makeup for events, I've always received tons of compliments. People are still telling me that I looked amazing at those events. I love being a natural red head. At least I did until I started turning grey and I was unable to match my natural color. Instead it was too pink,blue,purple,orange, brown, etc. No matter what brand of color, no matter what professional salon I tried, my hair color was not my natural color. Relaxed and fun atmosphere - an escape from the ""real"" world 10/13/2008

My mother and I followed Christina from that place in the Village to Upper Hand. Once I find a stylist I can trust, I will follow him/her any where. Every time I get my hair done, I have pleasant and stimulating conversation, a little psychological therapy, a few laughs, a glass of wine - oh, yeah and a great haircut. What more could I ask for? I like the relaxed atmosphere at the Upper Hand. I hope Christina stays there, but I'll follow her if she ever moves. Pros: atmosphere, service, friendliness Cons: parking - small spaces more

I had frizzy, out of control hair before I found Phillip! When I starting going to him I didn't even know what a round brush was. My hair was the definition of ""a bad hair day"" everyday! He took the time out of his day on my first visit to teach me how to straighten my hair with just a round brush and a blowdryer ! I left his chair feeling like a new refreshed person. I would highly recommend Phillip to any one!!!! Also, if you are looking to get highlights he is the BEST in the business . John Rubio should have a doctorate in hair, he is absolutely THE best stylist in Houston. I actually work at a different salon, but go to john because it is nice to be able to relax and he is so talented. His color techniques are amazing and he always puts me at ease with his sense of humor. Whether I tell him what I want him to do with my hair, or tell him to do whatever he thinks is best, I am always please. Mostly I just tell him to just do whatever he wants to because he is a genius! Seriously, Jennifer Macaluso is the bomb when it comes to hair. She has been working her magic for nearly 20 years (though you'd never know that to look at her) and her experience, as well as an innate sense of shape and color for each individual, will send you off looking like you just stepped out of page in Vogue. And best of all, she's equally adept with men or women and all types of hair. The best hair dresser 8/16/2008

Phillip Valt is awesome he has top of the line skills with color and cut. I have had many..many..many people ask me who ""does your hair"", I am always happy to respond that it's Phillip at The Upper Hand -River Oaks. When I go back to visit my friends in Pennsylvania they always comment on how great my hair looks, one of my close friends actually told me that she was envious of my hair style. Not only do I get a great color and cut buy my experience is always fun and relaxing. You really need to do yourself a favor and make an appointment with Phillip! My 4th visit to the Carrie/Mikey team--they are the best. I have dark blonde, wavy, shoulder length hair which Carrie expertly highlights to a very natural light blonde shade. I wear my hair straight so Carrie makes sure my cut doesn't create more work for me when I leave the salon. They are both very friendly and always discuss with me at the beginning of each visit how my hair is doing and what I want to change or not before they begin. Phillip Vault is The Upper Hand's Best Asset!! 8/4/2008

For years now I have trusted my delicate ""blonde"" hair to Phillip Vault. Aside from being spot on with the cut, color and style, he is the best hairdresser a girl could have (well boy too!). As frequent as I vistit his chair, I still never tire of walking in and catching up with this charming fella'. His entertaining humor alone is enough to keep me coming back. I have sent several friends and family his way. Oh and yes he has even helped me groom a few boyfriends! Everyone is always pleased, which is difficult in breakups because I always fight to keep him! I started up the John at Urban Retreat after my previous hairdresser moved to Spain. When he came to the Upper Hand I followed him because he does a great job with his cuts and his ability to ""mask"" the greys!. John Rubio is worth waiting for 7/23/2008

John originally started doing my hair (color and style) about 6 years ago when he was at Urban Retreat...when he came here i followed him because he is fantastic and always so consistent. I never have to worry that I'm going to leave unhappy. People constantly stop me and ask me who does my hair. Even if you have to wait for an appointment with him, he is so worth it!! more

I miss Monique and Melissa! 7/22/2008

I love this Salon. Monique, was great at facials and French manicure. I don't see her there and I miss her. Melissa was FABULOUS at shampoo and I miss her too. Tony is great too! I use to do my hair at Ceron's. He is a great stylist but he is far away from my budget. Now John Rubio takes care of me. He is wonderful. My hair is really tricky. I was a dark brunette and now I am almost blond and everyone loves it. John does my friend's hair too. She just started with him and he made great highlights on her. The only problem is I have a long drive to get there. I think it is worth it. We have to make sacrifices to be beautiful ;-) Pros: Everything Cons: It is a long drive for me more

My must-have hair stop... 7/20/2008

I love the job Rachel does with the Upper Hand River Oaks. It is a fantastic salon and a true ""must have"" expereince (and I get my hair styled all over the world as I travel a good deal). I re-arrange my schedules and have been seeking out John for over 7 years as a ""must see"" prior to any type of social or business occoasion when I know I have to look great. Everytime I leave, I swear I get a ""wow, your hair looks great!"" So, thanks all and keep up the great work! Check-out John Rubio! Phillip is Amazing! 7/3/2008

Phillip always does amazing work with my hair. He is very creative and can tell what style will look best on me. I always leave feeling extremely hot! I have never received so many compliments from friends and strangers on my hairstyles. The Upper Hand has a great atmosphere which adds to the great experience as well.
