The only place for a real Rainbow Cone 6/21/2009

Actually the flavors are Chocolate, Strawberry, Palmer House (New York vanilla with cherries and walnuts), and Pistachio ice creams, with orange sherbet on top. The rainbow cone is not a mish-mash but a complex combination of flavors that work very well together. The orange is like a sorbet and cleanses the palette before you get down to the other flavors; the pistachio has almonds in it along with pistachios, that way it has a nice balance, not too salty; Palmer House works as a nice halfway point- I sometimes get just palmer and green (Pistachio) on a cone (those are the flavor calls the kids working there use-that in itself is fun and helps the line go faster); the strawberry has actual chunks of strawberry in it and it is so fragrant. It works great next to the chocolate because, honestly, what better way to enjoy strawberries than with chocolate? (There?s a whole science to it) My family?s been coming here for generations-my aunt used to work there when she was my age. It is a real piece of Americana and a family favorite that is worthy of the highest praise! Pros: Has been around since 1926, so you know its good Cons: Can be a little messy, but honestly that is half the fun more

Come for the Cake Roll--Reward your Great Decision with a Rainbow Cone for the Trip Home! 9/23/2008

Instant smiles are spontaneous when this spiral rainbow appears outlined in a sponge cake of chocolate or sun yellow. It is my first choice as a special treat for my guests. Sometimes I need to remember to treat myself to something special too... but, I'm getting better at that! Yum! Talk about positive reinforcement... this is the way to go! :>) The price is tasty too. Pros: *Thumbs UP* Tasty ageless treat, plenty of parking and picnic tables, good prices and great smiles :>) Cons: Although they move quickly, be prepared for long lines some summer afternoons and early evenings. more

Best Ice Cream 8/30/2008

I remember going here as a kid. My parents would drive out here for a cone on a Sunday afternoon. My sisters and I thought this was an adventure, far from our Brighton Park home. It was a treat for all. I still go at least 4 times a year and bring home a 1/2 gallon of the rainbow. My sister and her family think Oberwies Ice Cream is the best, I challenged them to an ice cream taste off. I purchashed from RC, a pint of strawberry. They brought strawberry ice cream from Oberweis. Well, the strawberry from RC won, hands down. Also, you can get hand packed flavors to your liking. My hubby loves the butter pecan and the banana. Where else can you get a fresh banana ice cream? My Son-In-Law is a devotee of the pistachio, my daughter loves the orange sherbet. I know this ice cream is pricey, but so well worth the taste experience. You must check it out. Enjoy! more

GREAT NEIGHBORHOOD, GREAT ICE CREAM 8/4/2008

Rainbow Cone is a desitnation dessert haven! The ice cream is great (the Palmer House is divine), and we usually run into neighbors. For those of you who come from out of town and are ""fearful"" of the neighborhood -- don't be! Although that stretch of Western Avenue may look depressing, if you drive one block east into the neighborhood you will see historic houses, trees and gardens. Beverly is the Oak Park/Evanston of the south side! Pros: Ice Cream and the neighborhood ambiance Cons: None! (Unless you consider a line on some summer evenings to be a con) more

Its the best 6/23/2008

the neighborhood has changed since I was a kid but the ice cream has not. get a gallon every time we gon the side. I am lucky to be within 20 minutes of it. the original is the best!!! Pros: FUN CHILDHOOD MEMORIES WITH GRANDFATHER Cons: ? more

The Original Rainbow Cone, 92nd & Western-for generations 4/30/2008

There is no place like it and no substitute. Went there as a child, brought my children, go there whenever we get to town, hope to move back soon as it was a part of our life. The ice cream is excellent, especially the Palmer House ice cream. The service is great! There's usually a long line but that's half the fun as you enjoy everyone's company and have a blast while waiting in line and once you have your ice cream & sit outside with others. We've always had a great time, never a bad memory there. It's been there for generations and I hope it's there for generations to come. I have yet to bring my granddaughter and look forward to my children passing on the tradition to their children. If you want to experience what real Chicagoans enjoy, this is a must. It's local cuisine. Pros: everything's a pro Cons: may not enjoy if you're not sociable & don't like having fun more

Yum! 8/11/2007

The ice cream was FANTASTIC!!!! Pros: service, parking, taste Cons: neighborhood more

Not Bad 8/15/2006

The Original Rainbow Cone offers a mish-mash of assorted ice-cream flavors dominated by orange and lime sherbert, followed by butter pecan, pistachio, and chocolate. While surely colorful to look at these flavors, in my opinion, would be better if they were separated from one another as the flavor combinations do not mix well (ie butter pecan and orange sherbert). However it is possible to order these flavoes separately, leave the flavor mish-mash for the kids, and get a simple scope of pistachio or (and) butter pecan. Plenty of out door seating on picnic tables bring back childhood memories of family outings, hot summer nights, and sticky fingers. more

I LOVE this ice cream!!! 4/18/2006

Rainbow Cone is my absolute favorite place to have ice cream! I would go there everyday if it were healthy... But I do usually go every weekend in the summer! This is a must try- highly recommend the rainbow cone, but other flavors are available. If you don't get a chance to go there, they are at Taste of CHicago every year! Pros: Delicious, Inexpensive Cons: Some service problems more

Best Ice Cream Around 4/18/2006

Definitely worth the ride to 92nd & Western. Totally original - something for the whole family. Great art deco amibiance while you wait in line. Don't worry - lines get long, but move very quickly. It is like a factory behind the counter. Great service. Pros: Inexpensive, Homemade, Great more

A Southside tradition 10/8/2005

If you've never been...go. If you don't live nearby it's worth the drive. You're towering Rainbow will be like a tiny taste of heaven! Though you can order any flavor you'd like, not getting a rainbow at rainbow cone is like eating a salad at a chop house. Bring any and everyone you know who likes ice cream and have a blast! Pros: cheap, great ice cream, southside tradition more

Now you're talking. 11/20/2002

This place is great for ice cream anytime on the go. You'll meet alot of genuine people here,no fake smiles. If they like you they really like you.Thats the south side way.But if you want to sit and eat your ice cream I suggest Gerties they're all over the south side and what does the editor mean by out of the way? I suppose downers grove and Mt. prospect are just around the corner, duh! more

Creamy and Tasty 11/15/2002

This venue has been around since I was a little girl. They have staying power because it's just good homemade ice cream. more

Name All 5 Flavors! 8/20/2002

The most unique ice cream cone to be had! The flavor combination is fantastic, and original. This is a South Side gem that everyone needs to discover. Loved them since I was a kid. Many imitators, none as good as the original. Lines OUT THE DOOR, spilling onto the street, seasonally, but well worth the wait. Pros: Inexpensive, Delicious, Unique Cons: Crowded more
