Excellent Indian Food 7/23/2007

I have been here a ton of times and always have a great meal an spot on service. The owner is always there and makes you feel special. It is a fun place to go as a couple or with a group of friends. If you go with a group, try to reserve one of the booths in the back. Pros: food, service, vibe Cons: small bar area more

best indian in town 6/28/2007

Have been to this restaurant over the last 4 years. Always love the food! I recommend trying the shrimp balchau for appetizer and the lobster masala for the entree. Going with a group of about 4-6 people is great here because the waitstaff serves each person a little bit of each entree. Everyone gets a fair share! more

FABULOUS! 6/19/2007

I love this place.. it is the perfect fusion of Elegant, Modern Indian.\r The food is amazing, your palatte will not get enough. The Colliflower appetzr is the best..\r The Wines are delicious, the drinks are great. There is no waiting, you make a reservation and seated immed. \r My boyfriend and I love going there for Romantic evening, or for fun w/ friends- (ask for the booth seating). \r I absolutely love this place, gracious touch on every the dish. Pros: FOOD, SERVICE, AMBIANCE, EVERYTHING! Cons: NONE! more

Good Food/Sterile environment 6/17/2007

As an Indian...the food was very good. They changed the typical indian food to something more exotic. Halibut was amazing. ..lamb vindaloo was okay. The wait is a little long the Pomagranette drink was spectacular in the mean time. The waiters are a litte abrupt, coming by and at times pressuring you to order, and picking up plates before finishing. Over all the food was good and a good place if you plan in advance. Pros: Different Indian food Cons: Sterile atmosphere, pressured/hasty servers/waiters more

Yummy Indian Food 3/15/2007

Loved it! Been meaning to try for a while, and finally went last night. It's a cute place, modern, clean/trendy. I had the mango cosmo which was excellent. For dinner I had lobster masala which was SO good and the lobster meat is pretty generous. Also had the vegetable samosa (potato) which was yummy as well and the garlic nanne which was perfect cuz it wasnt stale or hard or anything but soft and tasty! I will def go back to try other things on the menu! Nothing was really that spicy which was good for me cuz I can't take much of it, but I am sure there are other dishes that are spicier. The decor and service was also very good and the place is perfect for a date, business meeting, or just dinner with friends. Entrees are pricey ($20-30 i think) but the appetizers are not really (under $10) and its all shareable. Can't wait to go back! i seriously have never been to an Indian restaurant where the food was just right and also clean and chic. Pros: Food was great, ambience is nice, service was great Cons: nothing! totally enjoyed everything! more

Utter Perfection 3/9/2007

I have been going to this restaurant for years, and it is above and beyond my absolute favorite place in the country to dine!! They have mastered all that is necessary for a proper dining experience, from the attentive, kind, and professional waitstaff, to the sparse yet stunning decour, to the food that surpasses all expectations. The chiefs here are pure artists and prepare the dishes with a mastery that I have yet to find in any other restaurant anywhere. NEVER have I even tasted a mediocre dish...all have been cooked to perfection often with rare and unusual ingriedents. I am utterly and completely shocked at the critic who said that this was the worst Indian food they've ever tasted. I believe one of two things happened: 1) They actually visited the OTHER Tamarind on Amsterdam Ave (Note: They are not owned by the same people and are being sued) or 2) They are from a competing restaurant. Either way, you would NEVER find a meal as described by this individual at the Tamarind in Murray Hill! This food is pure ecstacy! Pros: Food is a perfect as food can get. The chefs are masters at their art! Cons: I wish it was less expensive so I could go there more often! more

A gem! 2/23/2007

I can't fathom what happened to the diners who reveiwed this restaurant before me - I'm guessing Tamarind was having an off night because my recent experience was FANTASTIC!! My boyfriend and I are both suckers for well-prepared Indian food and its true that many establishments miss the mark, however, that was NOT the case at Tamarind. Service was perfect. The server was attentive and knowledgable without trying to be our best friend. The busser was prompt with refills, crumbing, pulling dirty plates, etc. A person who appeared to be the owner was roaming the place, ensuring everyones utmost enjoyment. Our starters were delicious, but the true stars were the entrees - my boyfriends house special venison was perfectly seasoned, tender and scrumptious! My chicken korma, well above average and the nan, flawless. We found the environment sleek but warm and comfortable, the prices quite reasonable. Can't wait to return! Pros: Attentive service, perfectly seasoned dishes more

Worst Indian Food Imaginable 2/20/2007

Please ignore the prior messages which are obviously written by the restaurant management. The service is poor, the food was served cold, was bland, and tasteless. The atmosphere is pseudo classy. Under the white cloths, old, rundown furniture is the norm. Avoid this restaurant at all costs!! Pros: nothing Cons: everything more

At least they got the Mango Lassi right! 1/22/2007

For the price of this place, I would expect the food to be better. But you can find better Indian food in the LES.\r Those hole in wall places in LES has mouth watering dishes.\r \r The chicken was too dry and was not flavorful.\r As for the dessert, I felt like I just ate a can of condensed milk.\r \r I would not go back to this establishment! Pros: Decor, Service, and Mango Lassi Cons: Food more

The best people and the best food 10/25/2006

I wasnt wasnt going to write another review just yet, but had to after reading the other post. I was at Tamarind last week one more time and had a nice dinner, the Owner and the manager both came to talk to me and my friend and it felt good to have a visit from them to our table, one more thing I must mention is that their wine list is getting very impressive. At last every place might have a off day but overall I'VE never had a bad meal at this place. I highly recommend tamarind to everyone who enjoys a nice place to wine and dine. By the way looks like someone had something personal with these guys. Pros: Ambience, food, wines Cons: none so far more

My mother-in-law is tough to please 10/21/2006

We took my mother here to celebrate Diwali. She is a cook and of the several Indian places we've taken her in the city, she only enjoyed one. Zagat07 said Tam was tops for Indian food and several guys at work said they enjoyed it very much. The decor was bland - just that bland NY indian restaurant look. The service was good - attentive an accomodating...except for the fact that we were seated at a tiny table only inches from the next table. We asked to be moved and were (kindly) told that a lot of people were expected soon and couldn't be moved. As for the food, my cod and crab cakes were moist and enjoyable but nothing distinctive...kind of plain. My wife had pori and it was on par with the delicious pori that my in-law makes. My in-law had shrimp balchau and it was basically a few shrimp in some tomato sauce. We order some sweet nan-e-tamrind and my wife loved that. We ordered 2 rices - tamarind rice and vegetable pillau - neither was anything special but I guess they were being compared against this delicious rice our family had been eating for the last few days which we got from an israeli restaurant. Both ladies ordered some crab soup - my in law said it was too milky and I agree, from what I tasted it was milky with no flavor. For dinner we had chicken tikka masla, chicken biriyani and lamb pasanda - all were pretty normal and nothing spectacular. I feel like this place is toned down for the american palate in a way. Kulfi, rice pudding and ghujjia for dessert were also not that great. Overall, I can see why most Americans like this place...to them the flavors are probably not that threatning and they feel like they are eating unique and special food. I guess for us it was a harder sell because we eat such similar food with the flavor at the level it is supposed to be - not hot or spicy necessarily, but flavorful. I would have liked it if they could have been less restrained and brought some of that to the table. more

What the hell? Needs training repair AND NEW MANAGEMENT 10/11/2006

Went hee for dinner on saturday night. In the bigining the server was attentive and then disapeared for 40 mins. When i asked another waiter for help he said that wasnt his area to serve. The food was medeocre and very pricey. The street food for $5 is way better. Never goin back Pros: Attentive servers for 5 mins Cons: Street food tastes better more

The Best Service ever received at an Indian Restaurant 9/10/2006

I ate here on Friday September 8th and the food and service was FANTASTIC. LOVED IT. The owner was so gracious and spent time discussing his restaurant. Very difficult to find Indian Restaurants were the staff and owners are friendly but Tamarind is in a class by itself. Sorry others had a bad time based on the reviews written but this is an honest review. I truly recommend this restaurant. Great Wines. Keep it Up. Pros: Food and Service more

DO NOT DINE AT THIS ESTABLISHMENT! 8/31/2006

We visited this restaurant because of the high scores they received in the zagat survey. We were very unimpressed and dissatisfied with their service (particularly their unfriendly attitude, the whole staff, with the excpetion of our waitress from Honduras). We were visiting New York for the U.S. Open and we will never recommend this restuarant to anyone who asks us about Indian dining in New York City. Even though my wife is Filipino and I'm Indian (we are United States citizens) we were treated like second class citizens when we dined at this restaurant. \r \r D.P. just got back from lunch at Tamarind and it was excellent. we decided to eat in tea room which was small and cute. we split a tasty vegetable samosa and the malai tikka wrap. I definitely will go back. more

Lecherous Owner 2/24/2006

The owner of Tamarind is a sleaze bucket. He literally started rubbing my wife's arm and afterwards wouldn't stop staring at her. I had to yell at him to stop. This review is not a joke, stay away from this place place at all costs. Cons: sicko owner more

favorite indian in all of NYC 1/17/2006

although tamarind is pretty expensive, it's well worth it. the food here is awesome and the service tends to be very good as well. i'm surprised about some of the bad reviews posted here - i've been to tamarind about 5 or 6 times and always come away extremely satisfied and looking forward to returning. try the spicy shrimp appetizer (again, not the greatest value in the world but worth the price) and the lamb vindaloo is great. very good breads as well. Pros: awesome food, good/decent service, cool atmosphere Cons: pricey, often very crowded more
