Great place for beer and a bite 10/31/2011

So many beers on tap, this place won't let any of you beer connoisseurs down. The nice thing is the food and the atmosphere are good too. Warning, the space is totally open so it gets loud in here, especially on weekends. more

Beer lover's heaven and great for big groups 10/18/2010

I love this place! They have so many beers on tap, it would take you a few DAYS to get through beer tastings. I used to live up the block, so stopping by Spitzer's was a weekly to-do. They have a great lunch menu and great location for people watching. I've attended and hosted many birthday/celebration get together's at Spitzer's and always recommend it to my friends. \r \r The only set back I would have is that the dinner menu isn't that impressive. If I could suggest this bar, I would recommend Friday and Saturday night bar-hopping, or grabbing brunch on the weekend. Otherwise, love this place! more

A true NY Bar 9/16/2010

So when you come along this neighborhood you will notice a lot of character everywhere. From the Yuppies and Hipsters that live here and interact trying to be cool. To the graffiti on the walls. And the local bars and restaurants that make LES what it is. This is a TRUE NY bar, where they have bench seats, open patio to where you can sit and socialize, and a small area. Love the area, and love this spot more

Worst Waitresses and ""Manager"" Ever 7/11/2010

Met a group of friends at this place last night. Just after walking in this short brown haired waitress spills an entire beer down the front of my girlfriend's dress while rushing by her. What's worse? The waitress yells at my girlfriend and says it her fault! While this incredibly rude person be raids my girlfriend with a finger in her face, I comment on how ridiculous the whole situation is and 2 minutes later the manager is asking me to leave. The manager obviously had no idea what had just happened and as my group of friends are trying to reason with him, the same waitress spills another beer at the bar! The manager has no interest in our side of the story and our entire group has to leave. Worst bar experience I've had in six years while living in NYC! Never going to any bar or restaurant associated with this group ever again. Pros: Nothing Cons: Read headline plus young obnoxious NYU crowd more

Awesome 6/16/2010

Always have a great time here. Great space with long wooden tables, and big open windows. Great beer on tap, good wine list, and good food. Pros: loads on awesome beer on tap more

really great brunch 2/21/2010

All staff are attentive and helpful. Unfortunately because NYC still has Blue Laws we couldn't have mimosas/bellinis before noon on Sunday, but the food is excellent! For later, they have a huge selection of both bottled and draft beers, including gluten-free brands. We've been there more than once, and the quality has been consistently great. The lunch and dinner menu looks good, too. Pros: creative way with breakfast foods Cons: Sunday brunch limited by Blue Laws more

Crowded? Check the back room 2/18/2010

Read any of the other reviews, and you can view the exploits of its grand beer selection and almost gourmet bar food. However, located in the heart of the East Village, this spot is guaranteed to be packed on any given night (especially weekends). Recently discovered, by me at least, is the back bar. Through a hallway that seems to only lead to the kitchen and maybe a bathroom, Spitzer’s opens up. Almost the same size of the front area, the back has a full bar and plenty of extra seating. No longer a need to be scared away by five deep line at the front bar. Go check the back before you move on. more

Great beer selection 2/16/2010

Overall I like this place. It's in a good location and the beer selection is top notch. For some reason though the people there always seem to have such an attitude. Not the staff but the crowd, which seems strange since the communal tables invite people to chat. Oh well. Good place to get a buzz regardless. Pros: Beer Cons: 'Tude more

Mac & cheese 11/14/2009

This place has the best mac & cheeze. I'm a beer girl and the beer here is great. Only downside is that if you want to stretch after a meal there isn't a lot of room as its more like a restaurant. Pros: Best Mac & Cheeze, great beer, food is above average Cons: gets tight with crowds, not enough hang out space more

Get your friends and grab a beer! 7/9/2009

This is a great place to grab a few beers and hang with friends. The outdoor seating is great and the prices are good too! It's a great place to socialize and hang. Lots of fun in the summer. Lots of beer varieties too! I really enjoyed it. It a busy place, so it maybe hard to snag seating. Fun place for happy hour as well. Pros: Beer, Seating, Casual, Free spirted & Food Cons: Busy more

Great date spot 5/27/2009

i love this spot. i take dates here. or sit at the bar by myself. love the sandwiches and burgers. they have gus's pickely on the menu. and their beer selection is always amazing. Pros: food is awesome Cons: can be pricey more

Great place, stamps have to go 5/10/2009

Great bar, amazing burgers, great atmosphere, great beer selection. However, everyone I have been with is unanimous that the stamp system (were you are id'ed at the door and get a stamp but then must reveal the requisite number of stamped patrons for each alcoholic beverage purchased EVERYTIME throughout the night) must go. It is lame, it is underage dance party stuff. I can go around the corner to another bar and be treated like an adult - get a new system or become regarded as the training wheels bar. It would be a shame, all the other ingredients are there. Pros: Great food and beer Cons: Army style enforcement of stamps more

Favorite bar in the city 4/18/2009

Spitzer's corner's has got communal seating, 40+ beers on tap, and awesome pub grub... what else could you want? In the summer they open up their windows right onto the street. not too shabby Pros: communal seating, plenty on tap, great fries Cons: the occasional hipster drops in more

Beer choices galore, good burgers & pickles 3/27/2009

Spitzer's corner is a great place to go with friends for some beers and burgers. The front of the place offers communal tables, whereas the back offers a more private setting. Order a bucket of pickles and some beers while you wait for your food and you will be all set. The burgers are quite good, and the option of a fried egg really adds tons of flavor. I'll definitely go back. Pros: Burgers, Beer selection, Pickles, Staff Cons: What are the drawbacks? more

pretty deccent spot 10/16/2008

will be back, right next to alot of my favorite spots. usually busy in the hood, & I live around here so usually there for brunch!! more

A Blessing to the L.E.S. 10/12/2008

LOVE! LOVE! LOVE! This place...I dont know what the hell this other guy is talking about. Ive never once had a bad experience at Spitzers and I come here constantly. The manager and the bartenders are always so sweet and accommodating. I have friends of a variety of colors and everyone has been treated wonderfully. They are super strict with their ID policy but its also their job. I bartend in New York so I get it. Spitzers is truly a gem! Pros: Great Beer Selection, Friendly and Knowledgeable Staff Cons: No liquor but they said they're trying to change that more

Great Beer Selection but.. 9/27/2008

great beer selection, one of the best in town, though I passed by it just last week and it appears that a certain city department has close it down. There were yellow notes on the windows that read the establishment had been closed. too bad as it was a great hang out for beers after work. Pros: great beer selection good space love more

Good bar but poorly run...and victim of its own success 8/7/2008

Spitzer's is a very bar in a fun area. Great selection of beers on tap and bottle, nice minimalist decor. Too bad I will avoid it on weekend nights for the following reasons: 1. It is overrun by the young upper east side crowd..lots of baseball hats and cute young preppy girls (wait a minute, that's a good thng...). And they'll ALL trying to get a drink! It's like they all got on a bus at Dorian's and it dropped them off on Rivington. What a nightmare. 2. Because of supposed underage drinking citations they've received the poor bartender has to see an i.d. for ever beer she/he gives out. Never mind that you opened a tab and have been previously served several beers for your friends...she still has to see who she's serving. The back bar did not have someone working back there. They did have a server taking orders back there though...he explained that b/c of the citations and having two exits in the back room the bartender has to card everybody. The girl working the bar last friday did her best but was understandably exasperated at points. She needs to pour drinks, not hasslbe people over id's. Let her do her job. So, dear owners of Spitzers, here'es how to fix this place: Please put a bouncer or two at the front door checking id's. Get another bouncer at the back doors. OR, just lock on back door and get a bouncer for the remaining open door. And get a bartender at the back bar! It'll hopefully draw the crowd to the back instead of the crap-show at the front bar. Yeah, extra staff will cost more $$ but I bet you make it up when the bartender pours more beers as opposed to me leaving and spending my $$ elsewhere! I'd love to come back, but under the right conditions:) Respectfully yours... Pros: great beers, chill atmosphere, corner location in LES Cons: lame crowd, lack of service more

Excellent Beer Selection, Great Atmosphere, Good Food, Hit-or-Miss Service Though... 7/23/2008

I've been to Spitzer's Corner twice and I think I agree with some of the previous reviews that the service can be hit-or-miss. My first time there 2 months ago was an excellent experience. We drank great beer, ate delicious food, and enjoyed the pleasant ambience that this restaurant/bar provides. The service was okay that time, given the bustling late-night crowd. But last night was a different experience: our waiter was unattentive, bouncing back and forth between the front and back areas, and rarely checked on us. We repeatedly sat with empty beer glasses for 15 minutes at a time, with nary a server in sight. 70 minutes after we ordered our food (and it still had not come), I finally got up to speak with the manager. At least he was responsive and listened to our gripes. After discussing the unacceptable service issues, we were treated great the rest of the night and our food came out within 10 minutes (a supposed miscommunication with our waiter caused our food to be delayed... still, that didn't account for the lack of service with our drinks). It seems like the service has declined in the past month or two -- other people who left reviews said similar things... that service used to be good, but lately it's just not up to par. What did give me a little reassurance was that the manager responded positively to our complaints and took care of us after we spoke with him. He was professional and understood our frustration, and he offered to knock something off our bill as a courtesy -- as someone with restaurant experience, I know that he handled things right. Our food ended up being delicious, and a new server was constantly checking on us, refilling our glasses frequently. That's how a restaurant should be run, and even though the service was appalling at first, I am giving Spitzer's Corner 3 stars and I will likely return -- the beer selection is fantastic ($6-$8) and I just can't get enough of the grilled cheese w/ tomato chutney. Pros: Excellent Beer Selection, Delicious Food, Reasonable Prices, Great Ambience, Responsive & Professional Manager Cons: Spotty Service more
