Unprofessional Treatment 1/22/2011

After 15+ years and 4 pets we have been denied vet services from Dr Spangler. Yes, we were told to take our geriatric pets elsewhere. Why? Because finally after years of feeling gouged for the cost of unneeded services and inflated medicine markups, we questioned the bill. This was our first and last time to question the bill. Hopefully this is the last time we will be gouged for a $24 bottle of Kaopectate for humans that retailed for $5. more

Experience is where you get the best vet care 10/30/2010

Dr. Spangler and his clinic is where you can feel comfortable knowing his years of experience will give you and your pets the best vet care in Austin. Old school yes, and you know you aren't getting charged for a fancy office. It is all about your pet and you getting the best care and knowledge you need to be a great pet parent. more

Great Relationship for over 20 Years 10/27/2010

My husband and I have been using Spangler Animal clinic for over 20 years, and we are so glad to have this clinic available. Dr. Spangler and staff have always been courteous and professional- caring both for and about our pets - and caring about us. We always know what our options are for our pets, for us, and the cost. On the funny side, Dr. Spangler would always advise about the anticipated pet life expectancy, to prepare us for making choices. However, our pets always seemed to hang around longer! so, he would say, "the average life expectancy for a cat is 15 years -- BUT in your case, it will probably be longer!" And it was - 19 and 21, with excellent care! more

Best vet in Austin - Spanlger Animal Clinic 3/8/2010

Sam runs an old school style vet. You can talk to him and his staff, versus most vets where you never meet the person working on your pet. Pros: Personalized care and you can talk to Sam Cons: I live too far away more

Try again 3/7/2010

Well, i gave Spangler animal clinic a call to set an appointment, and ask a few questions. The woman I spoke with was over the top - rude, and seemed to have very little knowledge of the field. The women i spoke with said that she would have someone call back. i never received a call back, and when i decided to call back there were still no answers for me. I could have spent the day having my pet treated instead i wasted 6 hours with the clueless, run around staff at spangler. So disappointed. Cons: Awful Service more

I don't trust my pets with any other Vet. 2/20/2010

Dr. Spangler has provided excellent medical attention to my dogs and cats, since he took over from his father, when the Clinic belonged to Wupperman/Spangler. He's performed surgery on several of my pets. His assistant Nan, and receptionists are top notch. Dr. Spangler explains pet's medical issues in depth, and has always fully answered every question I've asked. He's usually quite personable and asks about my family and job as well. Boarding - the care and attention is very good - The assistants' description of how my dogs play, let's me know my dogs really got play time while boarded. more

great old school vet 10/8/2009

if you want a good vet, who will give a good and complete exam of your pet, go to this vet. more

thumbs down 4/14/2009

The doctor has little to no interaction with clients. During the course of a 4-visit, $650 pet experience, I never spoke with or saw the doctor. Interactions were limited to front desk and nurse-- bad communication skills. Rude and uninformed vet tech flew into a Jerry Springer-style angry tantrum when I was upset by a significant error they made. The whole operation is something out of 1973. Poorly run. Over-priced. Aloof doctor. They push for patients to buy meds from them and are difficult when it comes to using on-line pharmacies. Despite having prescribed a medicine for my dog, the doctor refused to fill on-line prescription. Pros: initially friendly staff, until called out for errors Cons: bad communication, poorly run office, blocks web Rx more

Best vet in Austin 1/23/2009

I moved away from Austin two years ago-and the worst part about leaving was saying goodbye to Dr. Spangler and his team at Spangler Animal Clinic. I love my animals more than words can express, and when I came very close to losing one of them a few years ago (due to kidney failure) I was completely devastated. It was Dr. Spangler who worked a miracle and brought my Mr. Django to a full recovery. Pros: great location, parking, staff and communication Cons: none more

Nothing but good to me & my pets 9/5/2008

Dr. Spangler, Nan, and his staff have always been professional with me and my pets. They were there for my first little one from the beginning to the end 13-1/2 years later. 1/2 year later much to my surprise, I fell hard for another miniature schnauzer and there was no question who her vet would be. Pros: thumbs up Cons: none more

Ho-hum 8/7/2008

In my opinion, there is a serious lack of communication at Spangler Animal Clinic. I dropped my cat off one morning for his shots and the lady at the front desk was friendly enough and assured me the vet would give him a full exam as well as his needed vaccines. I went back to pick him up a couple of hours later. When I arrived, the lady at the front desk (the same lady who helped me 2 hours before) had no idea who I was or what was going on. She handed over my cat, mentioned nothing about how the exam went or any results from it, ran my credit card, and told me my cat ?is good til next year? (A friend went with me to pick up the cat and heard her say the same thing.) A week later I got a postcard from Spangler letting me know my cat is due for another series of shots already. I tried calling about this around noon the following weekday, but was informed that ?the person who handles this has already left for the day.? After a few phone calls back to the clinic, I finally reached the woman who possessed the ability to pull my cat?s file and she informed me that my cat is now due 4 shots! When I questioned why I was told earlier he would not require any vaccines until next year, she could not answer. I?m taking him somewhere else for those shots and will not return to Spangler. While I cannot directly comment on the quality of veterinary care since no one spoke to me, the lack of communication I experienced just left me frustrated. No one seems to know what?s going on there. Pros: They were quick. Cons: Never spoke to an actual vet. more

outstanding vet 5/27/2007

I've taken my animals to Spangler for years and have had the best care of my animals, both surgically and regular health care. Dr. Spangler is the best. more

Old School Vet 4/30/2007

Sam has done a great job in taking care of my two kittens (SPCA specials - 2 for one sale). I like his old fashioned demeanor and his no nonsense style. more

Great Staff !!!!! 11/21/2006

I had just moved to Austin when my 16 yr old cat suddenly lost weight and became listless. I called around to several offices to see when they could see Gato and what they would recommend for her. Dr. Spangler's office staff was the most courteous and helpful. My husband was the one who took Gato in (twice) so I could stay home with our 6 month old daugher and avoid making a scene in the office by crying. Unfortuately, Gato did not make it. She was just too old...which broke my heart. I wanted to let everyone out there know that the group of people in this office are simply wonderful. They were patient and caring. I called numerous times and was always warmly received and given answers to all of my many questions. As I was not there when Gato passed, it helps me to know that she was with such a caring group. I can't thank them enough...especially Nan. Pros: Awesome staff more

Doctor with BIG heart 11/21/2006

My cat was having severe trouble urinating. My car was in the shop and I had no transportation, so I took the bus to Petsmart at Balcones Woods Dr. and talked to the vet there for a bit. She refused to recommend any kind of food or give any help at all without me bringing my cat in for sedation and urinalisys etc. I was also told the cat would be dead in 48 hours. Of course I left there very upset. I was able to get a ride from a friend later that night to Spangler Animal Clinic. Even though it was more than an hour after closing, Dr Spangler agreed to wait to see me. He was able to determine the cats condition by gently squeezing the cats bladder and discovered the cat not to be blocked. He gave him a shot and sent me home with some antibiotics and specail food . Its really nice to see that there are Veterinarians around that are not out to get as much money as they can by running a bunch of tests and shooting x-rays that are not absolutely necessary. If you care about your pets, I highly recommend you send them to Spangler Animal Clinic. Dr. Spangler is very knowledgeable, down to earth, and really cares about his patients and their owners. Pros: Location, Service, Price Cons: none more

Downhome service and hospitality 4/25/2006

I'm fairly new to Austin, and haven't found a family vet for my 3 pit bulls...until yesterday. I had an emergency situation with my male, and after checking CitySearch for a Vet - I chose to take him to Dr. Spangler #1. because of his rating and #2. his office is located only about 1 mile from my house. I was not expecting to find someone whom I would be comfortable calling My Vetbut I did! Dr. Spangler, Jamie and the rest of the staff did everything they could to help my dog despite him not being the ideal patient. I am very happy to say that we will be calling Dr. Spangler our Vet from now on. Dr. Spangler has a down home, no-nonsense approachwhich is a breath of fresh air for someone who comes from a small Texas town. Thank you Dr. Spangler and Staff! Pros: Good Parking/Location, Caring Staff, No-Nonsense Vet more

There are better places to take your pet. 10/6/2005

I went into this animal clinic a few years back and the care wasn't what I would have expected from an animal clinic. The Vet was nice but not as personable towards my pet. The place was small, an older building and for the price we should have gotten STAR treatment. I feel there are better places to take your pet that could be more caring. more

Great Vet, Odd Scheduling Procedures 9/29/2005

The vet is a good "old-fashioned" vet who is conservative in his approach, which I like a lot. He doesn't say, "Well, your dog will be fine, but lets order a bunch of tests anyway." Rather, he uses good old-fashioned smarts to diagnose and treat, but orders tests, etc when appropriate. It kind of ticks me off that, when there's not another client around, you have to schedule a shot for the next day. I mean, it's a maximum of 5 minutes to give a shot, right? Pros: Conservative, Practical, Easy Parking Cons: Scheduling more
