Best

My wife works out at Sound Mind & Body Gym here in Fremont and loves it, I checked it out the other day and was impressed by the location (right on the water in Fremont), the frie...

Worst

I use the Fremont gym, and it's so NOT the standard gym scene -- just people serious about getting fit. It's clean, spacious, and the view and equipment can't be beat. I work out ...

Awful member service 7/15/2008

Being pregnant I had to freeze my account for 6 months. I wasn't told that I still would be charged a ''freeze" fee of $15 a month. Being on a freeze for medical reasons cost me more than canceling my membership and re-joining when capable of coming back! I talked to the owner, Vicky, and she is just rude, unhelpful and not accommodating. She refuses any refund as I should have know by reading the website (while I talked to 3 different staff members and was NEVER told about any future charges!). I will not recommend this place to anyone. more

Nice gym; poor service 11/11/2007

It is a great gym, but the service is awful. The owner could practically be described as rude to her customers, and the front desk workers are apparently untrained in the art of saying "hello" when you enter the gym. They act like you are putting them out by even walking inside or asking them questions. All that being said, it is a nice gym. If you live in Fremont, there is no other gym in comparison. Join if you must, but don't expect good service. more

Well equipped 4/4/2006

This gym is in a great location with beautiful views of the canal and lots of free parking. They have a huge gym for basketball and they offer lots of different classes at convenient times through out the day, like yoga, etc. The gym has many treadmills etc. so it's easy to get a machine. They also have a separate very large room with the weights and nautilus equipment. It's also conveniently located on the Burke-Gilman, so you could jog there, if you live somewhere else down the trail! more

This place rocks! 3/8/2006

I just started going here. It's big, clean and has mass equipment; Two full free weight racks, more resistance and cardio machines than you can count. I’ve never waited for a piece of equipment at Sound Mind & Body. They also have a full basketball court, yoga studio, with separate rooms for cycling and aerobics classes. What I really like about this gym is the fact that ALL the classes are free. My last gym was the original “rich guy gym”, redonculously plush in ways only the fat and rich can appreciate and they still nickel and dimed ya by making you pay for a cycling, yoga or abs classes. The location of Sound Mind & Body doesn’t hurt either. It’s right next to the Fremont Bridge so as you spin, run or pump you get a beautiful view of the water with the boats floating by. Class A gym. more

Great Gym in downtown Fremont 2/16/2006

Sound Mind & Body is the highest quality gym that I've ever been a member of. They have ample cardio and weight equipment. Parking is easy and free in their parking lot, and of course you can't beat the location. They have a full basketball gym (which I haven't used), and it looks like a ton of fitness classes as well. Their monthly fee structure is a breath of fresh air to the gym market - it is great not being locked in to long term contracts that require your half of your first-born to cancel. It can get a bit crowded between 6 & 7, but I've still always been able to find parking and the piece of equipment I'm looking for. more

Great gym (almost) in Wallingford 1/26/2006

OK, I know Fremont isn't Wallingford, but what's a few blocks between friends? Sound Mind & Body is a big, clean, well-managed and reasonably-priced gym located right on the Burke Gilman trail (just a 5-minute ride or 15-minute jog from anywhere in Wallingford). In addition to the usual gym features (treadmills, ellipticals, stationary bikes, free weights, weight machines, etc.), they have several different workout spaces devoted to different kinds of classes (step aerobics, yoga, etc.). The standout offering - at least in terms of local buzz - is the ski conditioning class. My wife and I took the class our first winter in Seattle and it more than lived up to its billing (I'm pretty dedicated about my fitness, and I hadn't worked out that hard since college). So if crossing the border into Fremont doesn't give you the heebie-jeebies, SMB is your best bet. more

Nice gym but . . . 1/26/2006

. . . the woman who runs it is a bit of a lunatic. she tried suing the fremont market (and lost) because they blocked access to one of three entrances. for some reason she made it very public several years ago. i used to work out there and while it is a very nice gym (great ski conditioning classes) with an awesome view of the water while working out, they tend to really nickel and dime you there for things like towels, etc. for around the same price, i found other gyms to offer much more. more

I love this place... 1/18/2006

SMBG is a great gym. It's spacious, the staff is friendly and I've never had to wait for machines. I tend not to be a class-taker so I can't comment on that, but I like the openness and the feel of the place. The towel charge is a little annoying, but minor compared to the rest of what you can get. The weight room downstairs is well equipped and has multiple stations for each body type which means, once again, that waiting is minimized. Parking is easy and its near the PCC for yummy eats after workouts or people watching at the Fremont Market on Sundays. more

Clean & well equipped 10/9/2005

Sound Mind and Body (in Fremont) is well laid out and has all the equipment you would expect to find in a good gym. It isn't cheap but they have different membership options, such as a punch card if you aren't sure how often you are going to use it. One floor is full of treadmills and exercise bikes and that type of thing, another floor has the free weights and nautilus machines, and then they have the mat room and aerobics studio. They also offer classes of different types, like yoga, aerobics, etc., and they have a big basketball court. more

Not a "family" gym 8/23/2004

This gym is sleek, modern, clean, and very "cool". Exactly the sort of gym I would escape to if I had a cheap babysitter to leave the kids with at home. Unfortunately, this gym has NO child minding at all, so bringing them with you isn't an option. Towels are 50 cents, and bring your own lock. more

Finally a gym with no attitude 8/13/2004

I've always avoided the big gyms (24 hr fitness, gold's etc) because they reminded me of high school/college in the worst of ways. I also prefer a clean, pretty facility with classes that are relevant to my lifestyle. Sound, Mind and Body offers all of that- and I only buy a punch card so that I can enjoy the outdoors and only work out indoors when rain falls too hard for a run. The pilates classes are surprisingly good and the instructors are extremely professional. Give it a shot. more
