Love this place, generous with the drinks and food. Service is great but you will have get you ass off the couch and order at the bar its not TGI Fridays. Its Melrose from the old days laid back easy going great place to hangout with friends and the food is great. Pros: Food, drinks, T.V.'s, Music Cons: Drunks more

Great place to grab an ice cold beer during a lazy Saturday 2/21/2010

Funny I almost did not find this place on City Search having only known it as The Snake Pit. This is a great neighborhood bar to grab a quick Happy Hour or a an ice cold beer during a lazy Saturday. The place is small but the staff is all around pretty nice. They boast a fairly large menu for a small kitchen and having only had the disappointing veggie tacos once, I can't really vouch for the food. So stick to a drink and grab a seat in the window to watch the Melrose parade go by! Pros: Full bar, large beer menu, located central on Melrose Cons: Street parking only more

Twenty beers on tap Great Pizza and Burgers! 2/16/2008

When we walked in they have this projector screen TV thats in your face to watch games!! \r We were were in bar heaven!! The bar display went way up to the ceiling, the drinks are reasonably priced and so is the food, my date had the burger which she loved and I had the pizza which put me in shock cause it was HUGE. I had to take some home cause it could feed three people @ six something a pop .\r They have this makeout couch where we ended up!!!!!!!!!!!!\r We drove by it twice cause its low key with a neighborhood bar vibe\r more

For me the best bar of it's type in the local - and I tried a good few. 5/7/2007

1st post - just had to come to the defence of The Pit. When I moved to Melrose from the UK a few years back I was desperate to find a local unpretentious bar I could feel at home in. The day I walked into the pit I knew I had found it. It is a without question a regulars bar and it may be fair to say they don?t put out the bunting for strangers but there is a method to the madness. If you put in the time you can find yourself welcomed into a wonderfully eclectic group of interesting people and for me that is what this bar is about. That and a great selection of beers, an internet linked jukebox and the finest Buffalo wings I tasted in 2 years in LA. The bar staff have all been there for ever and sure, if (particularly) T or Marina are having a bad day you may know about it, but for me that just makes it all the more real, no pretensions or false niceness and amongst all that is fake close by, I love the place for that. If you are the type to think it is acceptable to talk on your cell whilst trying to get served though, you could be waiting a long time. more

this place does not have a good vibe 5/4/2007

the service here is rude and not friendly. unbelievably calous and unfriendly wait staff and bar tenders. not a good vibe. don't expect to be treated with respect here. Pros: sports events Cons: the staff sneering more

Bad Service and Crowded Atmosphere 5/4/2007

The service at The Snake Pit is dreadful. The bar staff rarely serves you in a timely manner, and generally the bar and wait staff is not friendly and inattentive. Great location for a bar like this - horribly poor and substandard service. Pros: location, beer selection Cons: bartenders, wait staff are very unfriendly, unhappy and confrontational more

Keep it Simple, Stupid 3/23/2007

Look, this place is what it is... A hole in the wall. The drinks are cheap and heavy. The vibe is the opposite of pretentious. Most importantly, the entertainment is EACH-OTHER. If you want to roll into a place where you can get served, hang with cool people, sing loudly in unison along with an EXTENSIVE jukebox, and perhaps play some table Galaga, then by all means, go here. With the LA club scene being the absolute MESS that it is, wouldn't you rather not stand in line just to enter the belly of the overrated? This place is a hidden oasis. It's just a bar. Pros: Cheap Drinks, Laid-back, Friendly, Simple, Parking, No Lines Cons: It has the word ""Pit"" in the name more

They Overcharge -- Be Careful!!! 11/13/2006

Before tonight, I'd rate this place about a five -- now, I really wish I could go lower than ZERO. The bill for a modest night of debauchery seemed high, but the bartender (who looks like Rosy O'Donnell's tag-team partner) snatched the bill out of my buddy's hand before we could get our bearings. He paid it, even leaving a good tip -- then, before we left, we started thinking about what the bill SHOULD HAVE BEEN. They overcharged the bill by at least twenty dollars, but we figured we just paid a ""LET'S CROSS THIS BAR OFF THE LIST""-fee. The bartender noticed us looking at the food list on the board, totaling everything up -- she had that, ""OOPS, I'M BUSTED""-look on her face.\r \r DON'T EVER GO HERE UNLESS YOU WANT TO BE CHEATED. more

Worst bar everrrrrr 9/12/2006

The Snake Pit is an absolutely horrible place. I absolutely love dive bars and thought this would be my little gem near WeHo. Oh, so wrong...SO wrong! The crowd was sparse at 11pm on a Saturday night. Despite of this, it took the bartender seriously 10 minutes to bring us limes and salt for our tequilla shots. And on top of that, one of the waitresses caught a huge attitude with me for invading her space even after I apologized politely. This crazy waitress continued to stay on my back while we rushed to finish our beers and get out of there. I'd rather stew in a snake pit with no clothes on than go back there...horrible service, lame ambiance, and the rudest waitstaff I have ever encountered. more

Love my neighborhood spot! 3/19/2006

I live a few blocks away from the Snake Pit, but never ventured in.. It looked way to divey to me. A good friend of mine suggested we go there the other night for St. Patty's day, and we had the best time! People singing, drinking, just cool vibe. Add to that, no worries about driving home for me! Just a quick walk! more

It's Great, But No, It Ain't Perfect 2/3/2006

One of the least pretentious bars in LA. Yes the staff can be a little....moody if they don't know you. Just kiss their butts a little at first and after a couple of visits they take you in like family. Their chicken wings are awesome, but be warned. They're not typical buffalo style but rather asian influenced. Quite unique and quite good! more

The first time I disagree with citysearch 12/10/2005

Having recently moved to the west side of LA, we didn't have any favorite bars. From the reviews on citysearch, Snake Pit seemed like an ideal place to relax and watch football. Our experience revealed otherwise. The food and drinks were excellent, although by no means a value, but the service was deplorable. I've never felt so scrutinized by a bartender in my life. After two drinks, we left in the middle of the game because the sneers from behind the bar were getting distracting. The only thing to recommend about the pit is to stay away from it. Pros: food, draft selection Cons: service more

Don't let its name fool you 8/24/2005

The only reason why I keep from recommending this place is to avoid what happens to most good places in LA -- they go from a place where friends can meet, have a reasonably priced drink, listen to some great tunes, get carded by a guy on a stool who always remembers your name, served drinks by someone who is always smiling -- to a place where you get turned away at the door because you don't know the right people, a drink costs you the price of a meal, etc., Stop by, if you are in the neighborhood, you won't be disappointed.. more

If You're in the 'Hood, Stop By and Say Hi! 4/27/2005

Great little neighborhood bar... unassuming, good tunes on the jukebox, good hook ups on the drinks for not a lot of money, and no pretentious people. Food ain't so bad either. Pros: Drinks, Vibe Cons: Parking more

good time, good crowd, good service 5/26/2004

Cool place on the Melrose strip. Feels like the bar in your home town where the bartender knows your name and what ya drink. Good prices Pros: service, drinks, crowd Cons: , rundown bar more

great local bar 7/25/2002

the snakepit's that rare gem in l.a.--a down-to-earth bar where the bartender and the bouncer and the waitress remember you. On top of that, add some great bar food, a great jukebox, and friendly clientelle. more
