Naan better than Shalimar... 12/3/2002

In the past week ate at both their Jones and Polk street locations. Had the chance to sample their naans, chicken kofta, murchig korma shahi (curried chicken) and beef seekh kabab. Service is a bit slow but given the prices (all dishes under $10), who can complain? The naan was really good, slightly charred with a soft/tender texture. The spices were very subtle with just enough bite at the end to give you the sniffles. A great deal, good food that overcomes the negatives of the ambiance... Pros: Fluffy naans, Melange of spices, Clears the sinuses Cons: Relaxed service more

Lajawab!! 9/10/2002

Shalimar is the best place for Chicken kababs! Also, love the Aloo-Palak-Methi combo - best vegetarian dish you can get at any restaurant. The nan is always fresh off the oven and great. Don't venture to the back of the restaurant 'cause that will prevent you from enjoying the food - perhaps that's where the taste comes from :) more

Awesome!!! 8/13/2002

The best Indian/Pakistani food in town. The atmosphere is that of a ""dhaba"", i.e. taxi stop in Indian where cabbies grab a quick bite. more

Order more,please 8/4/2002

Hum, not the best decor, sort of boys bathroom meets, well, Shalimar. But food is honest. Good quality ingredients, typical spicing. Service is fast, and attentive. Atomosphere is congenial, relaxed, and family-like. Very cheap, but the portions are small and you should order more then you think you want to eat. Also, women may not like going here alone, I walked out the door two steps and got a friendly proposition. Almost hate to tell you how good this is because it's already so crowded now, but, it is really Wonderful food. Pros: good service, honest food Cons: crowded, odd neighborhood more

Good Indian Food 7/30/2002

This place has great affordable Indian food. It's crowded almost every time I go there, there's a line out the door waiting. The atmosphere is not what I would say ritzy upscale. The floors may be sticky and there are only wooden tables. And you may come out smelling like the food you just ate.. But the food is great and it's cheap. Pros: Inexpensive more

Cheap Indian food dive 6/22/2002

Shalimar has the spiciest, most flavorful Indian food I've ever had, and I always make it a point to come here whenever I visit San Francisco. Sure, it's kind of a dive, and sometimes the people who work here can be seemingly rude, but the food is absolutely worth it! more

Shalilicious 5/16/2002

Shalimar's location really isn't so bad. I've never felt even remotely unsafe there. The dining room is definitely a little rough around the edges, but it has its own charm. The olfactory sense is the primary determinant of taste, and this restaurant is definitely full of strong smells. Think of them as relish. The bottom line here is that the food is delicious and amazingly cheap. That's a hard combingation to beat, one that creates its own inviting ambience. Pros: Food Cons: Parking more
