Good Food but Beware ... 8/8/2004

The food is really very good, healthy, and also fresh. I've also tried all the deserts, all very good. The ambience is as bad as it gets but always packed with all kinds of people. Don't expect much. The reason I gave them a lower review was because twice now I was overcharged there. I read another reviewer that said the same here on citysearch and it really upset me how they keep the food costs down but add a little more in the end. Each time it was $2-4. BAD BUSINESS! Service is okay, they really don't care. For those with large groups that have a lot of food, beware and try to keep track cause your the easiest target of over charge. I think I will continue to go but (a) not as often and (b) will definately be double checking the bill and calling them on it. Pros: Fresh Tasty Food Cons: , Overcharge "mistake", Atmosphere more

AMAZING! 7/13/2004

This is one of my favorite places in the city! We eat there all the time, and have NEVER been disappointed! It is authentic, and therefore can be a bit spicy, so just be sure to order rice or nan with your main dish. It is fast, open late and not as difficult to park as the upper areas of union square. I LOVE IT! Pros: great food, easy & casual, fast, open late more

An Orgiastic Feast of the senses 6/9/2003

They say this is the type of restaurant you take your friends to, but not your parents. Oddly enough, I walked in there and there were two families with their 6 month old babies waiting for a table. The food is superb, as is the service. The waitstaff clearly know the regulars and appreciate it when they return. I've gone with groups as small as 3 and as large as six and the price of the meal is consistently around $40. A great deal! The food is spicy, but not enough to cover the distinct of each dish. The na'an is incredible too, though i'd pass on the Mango La'asi. One tip, don't wear anything you don't want smelling like Indian food the next day. Pros: Amazing Menu, Good service, Tasty Food Cons: location, parking more

Top cusine for fast-food prices 2/11/2003

Shalimar offers outstanding cuisines at very inexpensive prices. The neighborhood isnt the best, but the great food and value certainly makes up for it. I will defiantly eat at Shalimar again and recommend it to my friends. Pros: Food quality, Price, Fast Cons: neighborhood more

Decent Food, don't trip over the Bums! 1/29/2003

This place gets mixed reviews but my last trip there was just fine. The food was good. Chicken curry and the rice (#17) $10. Plenty of tasty, spicy food. The ambience leaves much to be desired, its the 'loin, what would you expect. Zagat rates the food 23 and the ambience a 3. Service was apathetic, they don't care if you eat there or not. I like the BYOB tolerance, a couple of guys brought in their own beer. I'm going to try their sister restaurant next week. Pros: Cheap, flavorful Cons: dump, apathetic service more

Dishonest business practice..... 1/16/2003

I visited the location on Polk Street last night and have a giant complaint. Our total bill was $17, but I was kind of irked because when I added up our bill myself, it came to $16. This shady adding is totally remniscient of Pakwan (in the Mission), where they just tack on a couple bucks to your bill arbitrarily..... I know, big deal - it's a freakin' dollar .... but every person who goes there is being cheated! A totally dishonest business practice. If they are going to take the time to print menus, why don't they just add on a dollar or two to the menu prices? I don't understand these restaurants and why they feel the need to do this. Overall, the food was great and the service was decent compared to other restaurants of this caliber but I will never return. more

great food, even better prices... 1/14/2003

Great Indian food at reasonable prices - just $20 buys you dinner for 2! We went to the Polk St. location (btw. California & Pine). Don't expect too much by way of ambiance though, seems like that's how they keep their prices down. Pros: inexpensive Cons: lousy decor more

Naan better than Shalimar... 12/4/2002

In the past week ate at both their Jones and Polk street locations. Had the chance to sample their naans, chicken kofta, murchig korma shahi (curried chicken) and beef seekh kabab. Service is a bit slow but given the prices (all dishes under $10), who can complain? The naan was really good, slightly charred with a soft/tender texture. The spices were very subtle with just enough bite at the end to give you the sniffles. A great deal, good food that overcomes the negatives of the ambiance... Pros: Fluffy naans, Melange of spices, Clears the sinuses Cons: Relaxed service more
