I have great memories of going to this place as a kid w/my dad. He worked at a shop not far from here, and in the summers I would go with him. This was our typical spot to have ...

I had not been to Shady Grove in a decade. When three of us finished watching the Saturday matinee of Porgy and Bess we thought we go have a good enjoyable meal. Of course, the gi...

do the patio 6/15/2004

Do yourself a favor -- get a burger and a cold beer at this place. The hippie chick is also wonderful --eggplant yum! The buns are great. The service is usually friendly. However, be prepared for a wait, especially on the weekends. Pros: good parking, inexpensive, attentive staff Cons: , long waits more

Shady Grove IS Austin 7/23/2003

Shady Grove is quintessential Austin and my all 'round favorite Austin restraunt. The atmosphere in the outside dining area is the closest thing we have left to the old AWH beer garden. My kids and I have gone in the winter time, sat outside and enjoyed ourselves without end. I love the food and I'm especially fond of their house jalapeno dressing. Economical, fun, relaxing, great food - This IS Austin! more

Overrated 11/14/2002

It's a great place to go have a drink (overpriced), and the atmosphere is great, but overall it's overrated. They do have my favorite salad, the Noodle Salad, but it isn't one of my favorite places. Pros: good atmosphere Cons: parking is awful, drinks are expensive more

Perfect buns! 8/22/2002

Texas tradition in hamburger making woudn't be complete without a grilled bun. Shady Grove's burger has just that! The meat is tastey & juicy, well portioned and cooked just right. Topped off with nice slices of red onion, tomatoe and lettuce! Yummy! Pros: Inexpensive Cons: Crowded more

Nice, but Overrated 6/26/2002

I've lunched here several times and it's got a nice ambience, cool laid back crowd and cool waiters. I've never really been wowed by their food, though, which tends to be fairly greasy and very uncreative. The construction on Barton Springs MUST end! They're are very stingy with their small (all ice) margaritas! Pros: Nice outdoor area, Friendly staff, A supposed classic Cons: So-So Food, Construction, Stingy drinks. more

Catfish 6/13/2002

I no longer live in Austin but this is always my first stop whenever I come back. There is no better restaurant that represents the easy going pace of Austin better than Shady Grove. A warm afternoon in the sun shaded patio with a cold iced tea and catfish makes for a unique experience. The menu is diverse and offers tasty choices ranging from chicken tacos, hippie sandwhiches, cold shine bock beer, catfish, thai salad and of course the shady fries. Keep up the good work and the Austin tradition. Those who did not live in Austin back in the 70', 80's and 90's can't appreciate the atmosphere as much of the newbies. Pros: Cold Beer, Outdoor seating, live music Cons: crowd more

i think i missed something 5/19/2002

I never really understood the appeal of this place. The food was pretty bland and generic. The outdoor area is okay, but, there are far better patios in Austin. more
