Stay away. There is no security in this high crime area of Seattle.Thieves are lurking. They WILL break into your car!!!
The garden is beautiful but so what! Our car windows were busted out and our suitcases/back packs stolen while we were in viewing the gardens! It was a rainy week day at 4:00, ours was the only car in the parking lot. We learned (too late) that park staff leave at 3:30. The sign in the parking lot warns that this is a high crime area. Heeding their advice we took purse/billfold and moved other valuables to the back and pulled the deck cover over the rear hatch back compartment of our rental car. Sometime during our 45 minute visit, brazened thieves moved in to do their dirty work. I believe this act was committed by professionals who prey on tourists. This was the coordinated work of thieves with spotters knowing where we were and being assured that no one else was in the area. It is believable that they knew when we were beyond hearing distance allowing them to noisily crash through car windows. In the aftermath, a park personnel was leaving for the day and while sympathetic, he was unable to be of any help. He pointed out the warning sign, but there is no indication that any additional security measures (such as security cameras) will be taken now or in the future. The police seemed overwhelmed with this type of criminal activity. Everything is gone including our passports; clothing; personal items; equipment; gifts and keepsakes. Fortunately this happened on our last day of vacation. One writer comments ""why pay to visit the Japanese gardens at the arboretum...?"" I wished we wouldn't have ventured out to this remote location and would discourage others from visiting especially on days when the park is absent other visitors.
