Unfriendly place 7/24/2011

Loved this shop when I first started shopping there shortly after it opened about 4 years ago. Then the warmth, friendliness and helpfulness started to decrease. Last time I shopped there, about 2 years ago, I felt very unwelcomed - almost like I was interferring with Angela's time - and vowed to never return....and I have not. Instead, I found Granny's Yarn Shoppe in Islip. This is THE MOST welcoming shop I have ever frequented. There is a HUGE selelction of yarn, patterns and notions. And the staff? Well, I cannot say enough of Granny and Misti. They wrote the book on customer service. I always feel at home there and always get all the help I need on the spot. Give Granny's a try...you will not be sorry! more

I LOVE Rumpelstilskin Yarns! I have taken both a class and private lessons with Angela and both were great experiences. When I first went in for a 2-session class, I had very little knitting knowledge. However, by the time I left that first class, I felt confident in what I was doing and couldn't wait to get home and work on my homework!!! I then took 2 private lessons to learn my own pattern and, during those lessons, Angela couldn't have made me feel more comfortable. I love shopping there, I love taking lessons there, I love going to ask my questions...all around, amazing experience every time! I am now a dedicated, true-blue knitter and I have Rumpelstilskin in Sayville to thank for that!!!!! more

This store just gets better! 5/2/2009

Rumpelstiltskin Yarns just keeps improving. New yarn lines come in all the time, projects for classes reflect knitting trends, and now the owner is even starting a chapter of Care To Knit! Best yarn store around with helpful, knowledgeable staff. I can't imagine what the one negative writer is talking about. more

The Very Best! 5/1/2009

I am an dedicated customer of Rumpelstiltskin Yarns and I've never been in a better yarn store. I highly recommend it! more

This store is the best! 7/2/2007

Rumpelstiltskin Yarns is as charming as its storybook name. The owner, Angela, is helpful and knowledgeable about both crocheting and knitting. The classes are great - they are built around projects so that you don't just learn stitches without any idea of how to apply them. The stock is beautifully displayed and includes high end yarns as well as basics, plus some of the most exquisite tools found anywhere. And - it's the only place on LI you can learn to spin! I cannot recommend the place enough. more

Rumpelstiltskin Yarns is THE Yarn shop. 7/2/2007

Rumpelstiltskin Yarns is the yarn shop to shop at. I have been knitting and crocheting for years, and i've never felt more comfortable in a store. The yarns are stunning, and will satisfy any need you are looking to fill. I have bought many things and have even taking a spinning class at the shop! Spinning is now on my list of favorite things to do. I even bought a spinning wheel as well! I tell everyone about this store and I suggest you do too! more

I love Rumpelstiltskin Yarns! 7/2/2007

I love Rumpelstiltskin Yarns!!! It is the nicest yarn store I've ever been in. There are so many beautiful yarns and accessories that are so unique that I've never seen anywhere else. The owner and staff are so friendly and helpful. You are not ignored there like you are in so many other yarn stores in the area. I love the spinning wheels too! I've taken two of their knitting classes and they were great. They have a lot of special events that I've never seen a yarn store offer. I was at the llama shearing they had in April and it was a lot of fun. They are also having a book signing and workshop with felting author Carol Cypher in November. I can't wait! I highly recommend this store. more

Rumpelstiltskin Yarn 4/6/2007

Novice knitters beware. The owner doesn't appear to have very much knowledge of knitting, although there is a knitter with experience who comes during certain hours. The owner (in the absence of the other, more experienced knitter) has given out bogus knitting tips to novice knitters, sold them products that they did not need, and made statements regarding the properties of yarn and knitting practices that are completely untrue. I'm trying to be vague to protect the innocent!!! The classes are extremely overpriced compared to other yarn shops on Long Island and the projects are questionably basic (gauge swatch class?!?!?!). If you are a savvy knitter who can see through the above kinds of traps, then the shop has an interesting selection of yarn, although all in the more upscale price range. Whether you're a novice or a more experienced knitter, I'd still recommend Granny's Yarn Shop in Islip over Rumpelstiltskin. Granny has an impressive collection that reflects a wide range of prices and fibers (everything from high-end Noro yarns to Encore wool/acrylic blends), she won't charge you for a pattern to make a garter-stitch scarf (happened in Sayville) and she is a knitter HERSELF and can answer any of your questions without leading you astray.... more
