Rubann Salon

\r I first went to the Rubann Salon in Westhampton Beach over the summer for a color correction. My hair had several different shades in it and I always needed haircuts because the ends were overprocessed. I was desperate to get it fixed before going on vacation. I had hoped that Ruben would do my hair but he wasn't there so Patricia took care of me. She was great. She spent a lot of time with me and really wanted to make me happy. I left with vacation ready hair - color evened out plus a few highlights, and the condition was much better. After 2 more visits with Patricia, my hair was fabulous. She made me a multitonal golden blonde. Wow! My new look lit up my face. I love it and get lots of complements. I have continued to see Patricia in the salon on 57th Street and will never go anywhere else. For the first time, my hair is sparkling, shiny and I have been able to let it grow because it is in much better condition. Both salons have always been very clean. Patricia is my life saver!!! Before going to Rubann to see Patricia I was given the absolute worst haircut of my life. Patricia was able to fix my hair and give it new life (Cut and Color). I was terrified to have anyone else touch it. She was gentle and absolutely the most talented and professional ""hair artist"" I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. I agree with the previous reviews..the receptionist is quite haughty and off-putting. It is ILLEGAL for the salon to ask customers to make out their checks to cash..it can be a way for the salon to avoid paying sales tax or business taxes, etc. Tell them you're making the checks out to the salon, period. They do nice color BUT that receptionist has got to go. She cannot add, overcharged me, is rude on the phone, and is completely clueless. She should also not tell clients to make checks out to ""cash"". Really, does Ruben know this? more

From the moment I called them I should have realized this place is a problem.... The receptionist is Rude!! The owners are arrogant and unprofessional the place is dirty and the Bill was ridiculous... My hair came out a nice shade of Green... Not only did I not like this place I Hated it.!!!... Annie is simply the best. She is a great colorist and a kind, sweet person. She always welcomes you and doesn't make you wait more than a few minutes to begin your appointment, even when she is busy. She doesn't pressure you into services you don't want or need as well. She is simply the best stylist/colorist in the shop. Do call her! So I tried to dye my hair blonde by myself one night and it turned into a disaster. My hair turned fluorescent orange/yellow like the color you would see on a cartoon character or something. I had to call out of work because there was no way I could go in looking the way I did I figured I?d find a salon and get it fixed the next day. Legitimately, I was so upset and thought it was hopeless and I was never going to look nice again. Thank god one of my roommates had read about Rubann online and told me maybe I should see if they could fix my hair. I went to Rubann and Annemarie help me so much with my hair and put so much dedication and concern into it; I felt like she really wanted to help me and she did. Not only is my hair fixed but seriously it?s the exact color I wanted originally. I am definitely sticking with her for my treatments in the future! more

As a life-long 'streaker', whose natural hair color has gone from light brown to almost black as the years went by, I consider myself a true veteran of Big Apple beauty salons. I have been over-processed, over-dryed, over-charged, and over-done at some of the best-known spots in Manhattan. I had been a regular at Pierre Michel (through several moves), and had pretty much gone through every self-proclaimed color expert in the salon. My hair was limp, brassy, and badly cut. A friend suggested I make an appointment with Annemarie at Rubann. That was truly the day that changed my life. I had met the first person who understood my hair, and knew which products to recommend. The color was immediately hugely improved, which was a great relief. After a few months, my color became the envy of my friends, and (I'm not making this up), a few women actually stopped me in the street to ask me where I had my hair done!\r \r The best part has been that I no longer dread those ""bad hair days"". With a great cut, and hair which is the healthiest it's ever been, and with the correct products, I can face rain, wind and humidity with dignity. Even if my hair falls straight, it looks healty, shiney, and great because of the cut Annemarie has given me.\r \r The other great part of the Rubann experience is that it is like an oasis compared to the chaos which marks most of the top salons in the city these days. I don't know what I would do if Rubann did not exist. I have been having my hair colored and pampered by Ruben since my late teens. I presently get styled by Annie & Ruben. I feel very lucky. The salon is professional. Ruben is a hair guru. Annie is hip & a hair wonder-woman. Ann-Marie(Ruben's wife) is a pro. Whatever your hair problems are...this is the place to come to. Salons make me nervous. I don't know what I want - though it's my head, so I make some impulsive mistakes, and then I REALLY don't know how to fix things. So you go to the experts. I felt relaxed and in real hands at Rubann - no drama, just a calm, professional atmosphere. Yes, color correction seems to be their speciality - but bad cut correction is just as important - and a salon that cares about making you look more YOU, (but better!) - not just some impossible person from a magazine picture is the edge of a professional salon.\r I think I know my hair - after all, I fight with it all the time - but Steven seemed to know it better than I did! I wanted a dramatic change, so I had gone two shades too light - sort of a Renee Zellweger color switch of the month. Bad move (as my roots were dramatically indicating), and all my special shampoos for blondes didn't seem to be making any difference in fixing the strawy texture. \r Without drama, Steven managed to GENTLY convince me that a) my hair should match my real eyebrows (though he offered to tiny my eyebrows if I preferred), b) that he could take my color back to my actual (summer light) color and that we could alter the color over time to achieve a 'summer/winter' natural blonde look, and c) he fixed my AWFUL layering and re-cut a sleek, swingy look to fit my face better. He cut into a bangs fall, bcuz my forehead is rather high - and it looks much better than the hangy layers I came in with. The receptionist smiled approvingly when I went back for my stuff, and said ""nice cut!"" - so it's not just me, she must see lots of changearounds during a day's ins and outs.\r If you walk OUT of a salon more confident in your real looks than in what you tried to achieve with your own imagining, it's an encouraging experience - and it means they really LOOK at you, and don't just 'dye and goodbye'. Some of the greatest treasures lie behind hidden corridors and secret gateways?and behind a door between Park & Madison Avenue is where I discovered Rubann Salon. The first time that I visited Rubann Salon was in the summer of 2005. I came in with high hopes that someone would be able to repair the multiple mistakes I had made with my color choices and highlighting over the past few years?that had left my hair tri-colored, dry, and unhealthy looking. As I entered the third floor salon, the receptionist was warm and intriguing. She ushered me in with a smile, and asked if I had an appointment, I let her know that I am here as a walk in, and was hoping that anyone could take me on?as my hair was in a state on which great epic tragedies could be written. As I waited, a man walked over to me, and asked what I wanted to do. ?I just want my hair to look beautiful again, the way it did before I started experimenting with it.? He came back after a minute and told me that unfortunately all the hair colorist were booked. As I started to leave, he said, ?you know what?I?ll do it.? As time passed, I watched my hair turn from a horror story to a beautiful story tale. I could not believe my eyes. All the ugliness was removed, and what was left, was a most lovely brunette color running through my hair. It was shiny, healthy, and beautiful. I was amazed. I told him he was definitely a miracle wonder, and if I could have his name, so that I could recommend him to my friends and family. To that he smiled and said, ?I?m the owner. I?m Ruben.? As I walked over to the counter, one of the stylists turned to me and said, ?You are very lucky. Not many people get the chance to get their hair colored by Ruben, especially without an appointment.? She was right. His coloring and repair work were phenomenal. Ruben wished me well, and told me to return again soon, as their hair stylist were also amazing. I promised him that I would... And I did. Sometimes destiny plays a part when it comes to finding amazing people, and you just walk right into the perfect hands. Those perfect hands belonged to Tracy at Rubann Salon. This charismatic, talented hair cutter and stylist swept me and my hair away with his sculpting abilities. I have been to hundreds of different hair salons in my life time, and never felt satisfied or happy. In fact, most time, I felt anxious before I got here, nauseous as my hair was being cut, and quietly disillusioned and disappointed by the job that the stylist would do. Often times, they would just give any haircut, not paying mind to what would look good on me, and never really caring to listen to what I liked.\r Tracy was different. He listen to my feelings, and knew what would look flattering, and he gave a haircut that would leave anyone feeling amazing, young and aspiring. It?s not the easiest thing to make long dark hair look flowing, alive, and exciting-- but Tracy does amazing feats with his talent! Tracy comes with a natural talent for fashion and style. Its part and parcel of who he is. Tracy always does such a beautiful job on my hair that I never flinch or worry as he cuts, creates and shapes a masterpiece with his talented hands, and his superb eye for perfection and vivacious vogue. And the cherry on top is that he is charming, personable and gifted all at once. I visited Tracy less than a week ago for a haircut, and since that moment, I have been receiving praise and positive comments from everyone I know. ?Wow, you really look great! Your hair looks hot. Where?d you go?? And I won?t lie--I sometimes don?t want to give it away. But hey-- everyone deserves to get the best! Tracy is a true master of his profession, and I highly recommend Tracy to anyone who wants to have that New York City flair, finesse, and absolute fabulousness! As Tracy always says, ?Work it, girl!? I am shocked by the comments this salon makes it response to its reviews. People are allowed to express their opinion in an honest forum, and I think it is unprofessional to assume that when a negative comment is made, it is done by the same reviewer. That could also be said for the glowing reviews this salon receives. As a long time male client, and a FIRST TIME reviewer, I can agree with most of the comments posted. Although Annie does not cut my hair, I don't see why the salon can't acknowledge praise for this stylist. People like her, and this is why Citysearch exists-so we can honestly evaluate services. Kudos for Annie and a job well done! more

Annie is the ultimate professional-she is young, hip, and knows her color. Moreover, Annie is discreet, easy to talk to, and fast. Another beautiful day ... because I've just come back from Rubann Salon with another beautiful head of hair. It sounds corny, but it's true. Every time I go, I feel like a million bucks because of Anne-Marie's amazing gift for highlighting my hair to a subtle golden glow (no one even knows I highlight at all!). And when she gets to the cutting and styling - she transforms my hair - giving me a casually sultry look. I love walking past all the mirrors as I leave and seeing the results from all angles. I practically skip out of there everytime. And the best part of it is, the cut lasts and lasts - morphing into a different style 8 weeks, even 12 weeks later. Even though I hadn't been there since well before Thanksgiving, today I went in saying to Anne-Marie - ""just do a little touch up on the highlight roots - and the slightest of slightest of trim - because I love the way it looks already"". And she did just that - exactly perfectly. I just wish I had some fabulous meeting (or dinner date!) to go to right now, I feel so confident - so sophisticated. Many many thanks to you, Anne-Marie. Annie is a genius. She's an extremely talented colorist AND stylist; she's also lovely and charming. I will continue to see her for my flawless highlights and style and have recommended her to a number of friends. The salon itself leaves somethings to be desired--it's often empty (though that makes it quiet!), the clientele is extremely aged, and the stylists--with the pronounced exception of Annie--tend to be frumpy and older. None of this really matters when I walk out of there with gorgeous hair but it's still an odd place to spend four hours at a time. \r \r One caution: the woman at the front desk tends to mistake a request for ""Annie"" as a request for ""Anna"". THEY DID NOT GIVE ME WHAT I WANTED WITH PICTURES & INSTRUCTIONS GIVEN TO THEM ON HOW MY HAIR WAS DESIRED, THEY GAVE ME WHAT THEY WANTED AND TOLD ME ON MY WEDDING DAY THEY WOULD TAKE CARE OF EVERYTHING AND I WOULD BE ON TIME FOR MY WEDDING AS WELL I WAS LATE AS MY 2 GIRLS! THEY LIED AS TO DISCUSSED PREVIOUSLY STYLES AND WERE NOT PREPARED, THEY GAVE ME A PLAIN FRENCH BRAID THAT I COULD HAVE DONE MYSELF AND MY 2 GIRLS COULD HAVE BLOWN OUT THERE OWN HAIR AND PUT IT UP THEMSELVES!!
