I’ve used the same movers for the last ten years but this time they were booked. I checked the ratings and called reliable. Before I scheduled the move, I asked about help packing since I am disabled. I also asked about getting boxes. I was told “no problem” to both.
On the day of the move, I was frantic trying to finish the packing myself. A friend came by to help and he quickly started packing the computer and the bathroom (all that was left to pack). When the movers arrived they canvassed the house and announced that I was unprepared and lectured me on my negligence. Then they took turns using my bathroom for their morning dump. The stench was deadly and packing the bathroom was put on hold. We ran out of boxes and asked the movers for boxes. They said, “We don’t supply boxes.”
When they had been at work for less than an hour I overheard them on the cell phone telling someone that the next job would be delayed because this one was going overtime. I said, “Hey is this going overtime?” He tells me “Oh no that’s not about you at all.” But it was about me. Less than an hour in and he knew he had a situation he could milk. Everything was in slow motion and everything required a great deal of discussion and another lecture on what horrible packing job I had done.
I thought the movers would load the heaviest furniture first and I was prepared for that. I also had all the heavy boxes of books and kitchen equipment packed, sealed and ready to be loaded. But they toured the house finding various sized boxes to carry out and sit on the lawn. Once outside they spent 30 to 45 minutes rearranging the boxes and loading them. The sofa, loveseat, desk and other heavy items went in last. When I asked why they said it was like a Rubik’s cube (too complex for me to understand). Every time I tried to ask a question there was another lecture on my failure to pack properly and yet another discussion of my incompetence with any available male.
