I recently brought my friends here, WE HAD A BLAST !!!!\r BEST RESTAURANT ON SMITH STREET !\r more

Not so great food.....yuk! 6/3/2011

On June 3rd 2011, me, my wife and children along with my brothers, my sister and their families went to this restaurant to celebrate my mom's 80th birthday. First of all let me tell you.....HORRIBLE service!!!, 2 chipped dishes, had to ask for water and soda to the waiter(there was none on the table),wine smelled like tobacco. Then, when they brought the pasta bolognese it was horrible, the sauce looked and tasted like gravy!! Finally when they asked if we wanted cappuccino or coffee or tea, i asked for cappuccino, and it tasted like water and cocoa, it was absolutely horrible......well you get the idea. I would not go to this restaurant even if it was free! more

Best Italian Food in Brooklyn!!! 3/2/2011

This is response to a very poor review that I just read on this sight. We've been going to The Red Rose for many years, and never has any of this ever happened to us, how unfortunate. The owner is far from surly, the food is the best in the neighborhood, and I can say that because I'm Italian - and it's probably a good thing that you won't be going there again......you sound pretty arrogant yourself. The Romano's are wonderful and treat everyone like family. The wait staff goes out of their way whenever we're there, and have a great concept of what good customer service is all about. Yours is one of two bad reviews, and overall they have a 4 star rating, so I'd say that's a pretty good track record that speaks for itself. Too bad you didn't get to experience what everyone else does when they go there. Can't win 'em all....... more

horrible food and service - avoid this place 9/25/2010

- surly owner who gruffly took our order - penne bolognese was thrown so hard on the table that a pool of dark brown liquid, sprayed across us all. Pasta was over cooked (mush), bolognese was flavourless and watery - main course of chicken ptarmigan never arrived, when asked where our order was, the response came: ""your next"" again in a very angry tone - waiters appear to be a bunch of loud, spotty faced, arrogant teenagers who are more interested in shouting monosyllabic grunts at each other than any concept of service - we asked for the check at this point, deciding to forego our main courses (another 30 min wait had left my 2yr old daughter distraught with boredom - the owner arrived, tore the check up in our face. He said ""I've been here for 30 yes, I don't need this"" - he was right, he will never see us there again This restaurant serves pure slop in an arrogant and dated fashion. Avoid Red Rose like the plague more

Horrible Service 9/11/2010

Never have I experienced such horrible service. Went for a birthday celebration of a family member in which they recommended the place, you would expect that the treatment would be exceptional, yet the service was atrocious. Three waiters and including the owner did not come to our table not even once to ask how was everything, we asked 5 times for water, and at the end while my cousin was choking on her food was finally when they bought the pitcher without cups, then asking for the cup the waiter tells me I only have two hands. more

Big Servings of GREAT Food. 5/27/2008

My husband & I go to The Red Rose at least 3 times a month.\r The food is always good.\r The ""Specials"" are even better. They keep changing the menu and the specials but still keep the entree prices at about $20.00 - - YET, the servings are huge. Pros: Great Fresh Food, COLD Beer on Tap, value oriented wine list, REAL FOOD from Italy. Cons: Closed on Monday AND Tuesday - but we've gotten used to going on Wednesday & Sunday. more

Great Food + Great Prices + Easy to Get to = Red Rose 2/29/2008

I live in Bensonhurst, but I go to The Red Rose in Carroll Gardens for real Italian food.\r The Red Rose is a blast from the past. Perfect Pasta and Itailian Owners says it all. \r \r They've been in that same spot for like 25 years and have ALWAYS run the place like the family business that it is.\r - The Son is your Matre D', \r - The father is the Prep Chef who oversees EVERYTHING, \r - And the mom is your hostess. \r The 3 of them are there every night to greet me and my wife & now my kids.\r (A cousin is in the kitchen and I think a newphew or 2 work the dinning room)\r \r The Red Rose is a perfect place for my wife and I to eat alone or with another couple AND it's also a great place to bring the kids.\r Many times on a weeknight my wife drops the kids at her mom's and then meets me at the Red Rose.\r I take the ""F"" train right from work to Carroll Street and then I'm having Shrimp wrapped in proscuttio within 10 minutes & a perfectly grilled Pork Chop soon after!\r \r Before we drive home we stop RIGHT NEXT DOOR to the Wine Shop ""Vintage Cellars"" - - - It's been there for over 10 years and is owned by the Daughter-in-law of the Red Rose Owners. \r Great wine, great selection, great conversation & great fun. My wife & I figured that our 8 y/o son was conceived after a dinner at The Rose and a bottle of wine brought home from Vintage Cellars.\r \r I've been to the other Carroll Gardens ""Taste of Italy""places. And I don't care if they name their place after an Explorer, if you're not eating at the Red Rose then you're not getting GREAT Food at GREAT Prices!! Pros: Casual Dinning, great prices, large selection, fresh food, FANTASTIC Caramel Cheesecake!! Cons: Closed Monday. My wife & I used to like going on a Monday to watch football and have dinner at the bar. more

A Smith Street MUST!! 5/24/2007

Wow - What a Restaurant! I'm 28 years old & I've lived in Carroll Gardens for about 3 years & always walked past the Red Rose. I thought it was an old restaurant for old people. But after getting sick for the 3rd and last time at the Union Smith Cafe, I figured I'd give this ""old place"" a shot. \r WOW - I wished I walked in the place 3 years ago when I 1st moved here from N.J.\r 1st - the food was better & fresher than anything else on Smith Street.\r 2nd - the beer was cold and served in a clean glass (instead of a dirty bottle or pre-used plastic cup you usually get along Smith St.)\r 3rd - They let me eat at the bar because I was alone that day & didn't want a table.\r They made me feel right at home. I knew the Owner Manger ""Santo"" for 15 minutes & it was like I'd found a long lost buddy. I found out that he's just a ""Nice Guy"" who makes all his customers feel comfortable. He introduced me to his parents who opened the red Rose 25 years ago.\r I've been there at least 10 times since March '07 and every single time I'm there I get a warm welcome & a great meal! When I go there with friends or my NEW girlfriend, Santo & his family make ME feel like family.\r If you want real food, real service & a real nice time then go to the Red Rose. Eat & drink at the bar or grap a quiet table. Either way you'll be glad you went.\r Pros: Great Hot Food - Very Cold TAP Beer Cons: They're all Giants Fans! more

Gem of a restaurant 2/14/2007

I have been going here for about 5 years and they have never failed me. Impeccable service, great food, reasonable prices, and a wine list that isn't priced through the roof. The waitstaff are always polite and attentive, even when it's busy and the host is fantastic. One of my favorites. Pros: Great food, great people Cons: None! more

One of the Best 12/2/2005

We have been eating there for at least 20 years, and it is still one of the best Italian restaurants in Brooklyn, in our opinion. The Romano family is very hands on with the father supervising the kitchen and Santo, the son, running the room with a high degree of personal attention. The dishes are all cooked to order and made from fresh food; and, in additon to the outstanding Italian offerings, there are always delicious fish and meat specials. Also, there is an excellent selection of inexpensive wines from many regions. Treat yourself and become a regular there. Pros: excellent food, reasonable prices, excellent service more

Red Rose is Better Than Ever 7/26/2005

I know Brooklyn & food from Italy. Go to the Red Rose! In the mid '80's - when I was young - we'd travel all the way from Bensonhurst - which was full of Italian Restaurants- and go to the Red Rose with my very Italian family. I remember I had a crush on the waitress (An Irish girl related to the owner thru marriage) As I got older, I continued to eat there with friends & family. In 2000, 2001 the food had become just OK. I didn't go back until the Winter of '02/03 O.M.G. - The food was great!! Now I go at least once a month!! Great Food - Great Wine - Great Place! Pros: Great/Fresh Food, Large Portions, Full Bar w/ Taps more

Yummy 5/1/2004

Great neighborhood restaurant! Very good menu & very creative specials! A real TREAT! Pros: Creative menu, friendly, good value more

Was great but what happened???? 11/1/2002

I have been going here for years but on my last two visits I couldn't believe the difference. The food was awful and the prices went up. I guess they are trying to catch up to the prices for the rest of the street (Smith St.). What a disappointment! more

Wonderful 9/27/2002

I have been to Red Rose several times over the past year and the food has been incredibly fresh and delicious every time. The service is great, very helpful. A better wine selection couldn't hurt, but this isn't that kind of place. more
