The Restaurant that Time Forgot 3/21/2008

Decent Mexican food is hard to come by in Honolulu. I've been to a great many Mexican restaurants in my quest to find comida sabrosa. Quintero's was by far the worst. It was the most bizarre and uncomfortable dining experience I've ever had. I'll explain. I've been in the restaurant business for over 10 years, so I understand it intimately. I'm very sympathetic to the plight of an establishment because I know all of the things that can go wrong, both in the front and back of house. However, I have no way of explaining how so very much could have gone so very wrong in this pitiful place. It was as if I'd stepped into The Twilight Zone. The menu invalidated any claim of authenticity as it was peppered with misspelled words, in English and Spanish (I'm fluent in both). The wait staff consisted of one incompetent and painfully slow server, who had only four other tables. The service was comically bad-- easily the worst I've ever experienced. The beverage I ordered never arrived. Almost 20 minutes passed before our food order was taken. The food took an inexcusably long time, so long in fact, that I had to assume it had been forgotten about. In total, we were there for two dragging hours. We should've gotten up and left, but our morbid curiosity urged us on. Even the music was unsettling. We heard the same bad Muzac rip-off of a Gipsy Kings song FIVE consecutive times. Somehow, it had gone unnoticed that the song was on repeat. Quintero's has an ambiance only David Lynch could appreciate. The food was atrocious. I ordered enchiladas. Oddly, the salad that came with it was encroaching on the enchiladas and had been so drenched with dressing that my bland enchiladas were literally swimming in Italian dressing. Revolting. I never asked for dressing nor do I like it. Qunitero's was so hilariously bad that my date and I had to laugh to convince ourselves that we were still sane. Quintero's is an insult to Mexican food and should be avoided completely. Pros: Makes for a hilarious story. No place can possibly be strange or terrible. Cons: Service, food, ambience, music more

Best Mexican food in Hawaii 11/8/2006

The service can be slow at times but it is well worth the wait. The food is fresh (not out of can) and authentic as you can get in Hawaii. I judge every Mexican restaurant by its rice and beans first and Quinteros passed with fying colors. The beans are hot and fresh and the rice is tasty and fluffy. The Ceviche, Guacamole, Chile Verde, Relleno, Enchiladas Carne Asada, are all excellent. Pros: Fresh and authentic Mexican food Cons: Service can be slow at times more

Good food. Nice cozy atmosphere. Wasn't real busy on the night I went (Sat around 7 p.m.). I had the Carne al Arriero, it was quite good. Pros: Quiet, prompt service Cons: Tough to find parking more

I had dinner there on a weekend and was I impressed. For starters we had some margaritas and they weren't that bad. Then we had ceviche and man was it good. I asked the waiter to order there best entree they had. He told me that he was going to order for me Carne al Arriero. I was impressed, there beans were fresh and it had a good taste in other words it did not taste like it came out of a can and the rice was dilicious. The steak had a very good chile sauce and it was a good portion for it's price and it you love mushrooms this is the entree for you. Over all we enjoyed dinner and I promise you would too. more

Quintero?s?Bad Service, Great Food 8/2/2003

My first visit, I?d been impressed with the service and tasty fare. However, upon returning, I suffered a rude awakening. Food was still good (great salsa and green sauce!), but service was terrible. On a weekday night there were two servers in the non-busy restaurant. Despite asking for water twice, once of each waiter, we watched as the first waiter continued to serve other customers while the other slowly cleared a table before bothering with our refill. It was our last refill until our plates were cleared?and once again our water glasses had been empty for quite some time. Upon asking for a doggy bag, they gave me a tiny hamburger-size container for my half a plate of food, and when I asked for an additional container, they stared at me as though I had insulted them! Warning?they charge you after the first basket of chips, too. more
