We were not that thrilled with our Palomino visit. It started out great, with friendly bartenders and great Martini's however from there it went downhill. The food was average a...

Solid Downtown Performer 7/16/2003

This place has been downtown for a long time and is consistently good. Great for dinner before a show, they are very cognizant of getting you out on time if that is your preference. Excellent spit roasted meats and brick oven creations & fresh fish preparations are countered with a wine list of mostly well known labels but the vintage is not always accurate. Standard 150% markup applies to wine purchases but the are good about letting you bring in your own selections if you are nice about it. There are plenty of servers but not all are equally good so service can sometimes be a little uneven. However, the location and solid food offerings more than make up for any shortcomings in service. I recommend heartily. Pros: Validated parking, Great food, Kiddie activity boxes Cons: No outside seating, Schizophrenic service more

Entre pulled it off 3/15/2003

If the paella hadn't been so extremely good, with great big chunks of all sorts of seafood, I would have been disappointed with our visit. The calamari was warm to room temp, my salad was drenched in dressing (which I didn't expect from the menu description), and the 'chocolate tower' was just OK. The wine list is good and wine is served at the proper temperature (we had white). The setting is urban trendy . . . I didn't quite expect the music to be so upbeat but thought the decor and energy knit together well. Pros: validated parking, good choice of wines Cons: a bit noisy more

Trendy, Loud Urban Scene 3/15/2003

Well I hadn't been to Palomino in 5 years and either my memory was poor or the restaurant had become a little more trendy than I remembered. The decor was modern and fun but the music was too loud and the menu was too broad for my liking. We had mediocre fried calarmari and the romaine hearts salad with too much garlic and vinagrette dressing. The main course saved the day: excellent basted tiger prawns for me and paella with generous amounts of seafood for my fiance. My cosmopolitan was also very good. The disappointing chocolate mint tower dessert ended the evening- just not minty or rich enough to justify itself. Overall it was a fun scene just don't expect exceptional food or to hear any conversation. The folded paper menu, loud pulsing music, and goofy salt, pepper, toothpick and sugar dispenser seemed to undermine any elegance. Pros: validated parking, modern decor Cons: music too loud, overwhelming menu, disappointing sides more

What happened? 10/14/2002

I have never had a watress treat me worse than ours did on Fri. Oct. 11. My sister, mom & I went there after a day of power-shopping downtown Mpls. We were exhausted and ready for some good food and wine. We were seated promptly. Unfortunately, it took almost 20 minutes to even be greeted by a staff person. Another 20 minutes to get water...another 20 to get bread...you get the picture. I ordered some type of Spaghetti Carbonara and was rudely told by the waitress that ""it's SpaghettINI..not spaghetti"". So sorry! I'll bring my Italian phrasebook next time. I had to order wine twice before she brought it, my sister's vodka tonic was gin. She was rude and made us all uncomfortable. I don't care if the food there is somewhat tasty, I will never return. Pros: Food, Ambience, Location Cons: No customer service, No customer service, No customer service more

Superb Flavors! 9/18/2002

Nice atmosphere for an elegant dinner and loud enough to have a laugh or two. We went as a group and shared appetizers and desserts. The portabella mushrooms in the salad tasted like steak. My main course was the pan seared flounder with creamed pea and asparagus sauce. The flavor of that dish is one I will remember for a long time. The others tried it and we all had the same reaction-wonderful! I also tried rib-eye steak, it melted in my mouth. The prawns were beautifully presented and tasted great. The kids had cheese pizza and spagetti. The spagetti is garlicky. Kids can go here if they behave well. The desserts were very tasty and we found room for them. My husband thought it was the best orange scone (with toppings) that he has ever had. Service was excellent. We enjoyed the whole experience for a special night out. more

Great People Watching 9/12/2002

What a wonderful and grand place. This place makes you feel like someone special and you wouldn't be surprised to see a celebrity seated at the next table. Food was pricey but creative and good. The wait staff is superb. Perfect place to have dinner before going to the theatre. Pros: Beautiful space, Great Wait Staff Cons: Expensive more

Great place for couples 8/21/2002

Great food, great service, beautiful atmoshpere. Kinda spendy but worth the experience. Not a place for children. Romance and business. Great place for couples. more
