foodie restaurant 4/21/2007

This is an excellent restaurant and a great value. It is high end gourmet French Japanese creatively and expertly excecuted. The ambiance looks like a former sushi bar, which this restaurant is not. The service is friendly and professional. It feels hip without being at all pretentious or trendy. The portions are relatively small because they are tapas but they are very rich, flavorful and interesting and it is great to be able to try a few. Especially amazing were the ahi sashimi, foie gras and beet dishes. One thing to know is that they do not take reservations and this is a very small restaurant. Pros: great value, awesome food Cons: very small and they don't take reservations more

Very Tasty. 3/7/2007

I read the reviews and knew to expect fairly small size portions. Everything we ordered was delicious. The combination of flavors was fun. It was not as expensive as I thought, two of us ate until we were somewhat full for around $80. more

Love it! 2/7/2007

I tried Orris on Sat and loved it!!! We ordered the seared ahi tuna sashimi (one of the best in town, thick cut and the sause was great), marinated black cod on basil mashed potato (great fusion!), berkshire pork medallion (the creamy sauce begged for bread to dip in but the bread is not provided unless asked for), the crisp veal sweetbread sauteed with shimeji/shitake mushroom was awesome. I was thinking of the ravioli but decided to save it for next time which will be real soon :-). This is serious eating for a reasonable price, imho. The staff was really friendly also. \r \r Pros: great food, friendly service, good pace Cons: no reservation more

Affordable Fine Dining 1/17/2007

The great thing about Orris is that you can actually afford the food! Each small plate is about $8 (the most expensive around $14) and per person, two plates will make a fine meal. Four of us went to dinner last night and we ordered 6 plates and were very well fed. This is NOT your typical American, huge servings place, so you will leave sated with wonderful flavors in your mouth, not feeling overstuffed and wanting a nap. If you add wine to the dinner it will bring the price up a bit, but the wine has been perfectly paired with the plates and is worth the upgrade. The service is excellent. Everyone was very friendly, the food arrived quickly and hot, and when we couldn't stay for desert the waiter brought us each a complimentary glass of muscat dessert wine. Orris is a true gem! Pros: Wonderful Food, Open Kitchen, Friendly Staff, Parking Cons: It's popular so make a reservation unless it's an ""off"" night (like a Tuesday) more

Don't go for the sushi... 1/15/2007

Because it's not a sushi restaurant, contrary to what it looks like. This place has excellent tapas and a great wine selection. I wouldn't recommend this place if you're famished but a great place to wine and dine. We had a bit of a wait so I might try reservations next time. I will also try the AHI TARTARE. We actually ended up ordering 3 of them, plus several other plates. As long as you know that tapas is another way to say ""small plates"", you'll enjoy it immensely. Pros: Parking in the rear Cons: Long wait, make a reservation and Noisy more

Amazing, unique dishes! 11/2/2006

I've never been dissapointed with anything I've ordered here. From their seafood to their meats, soups and desserts - it's all the kind of food that makes you pause the dinner conversation for a moment so you can just enjoy the flavor. Enjoy! more

So Impressed! 10/2/2006

My boyfriend and I had dinner here on Sunday night and it was the best meal I have had in a while - for so many reasons. They have a great menu - it was hard to narrow it down, but we decided on the filet mignon, the albacore lettuce cups, the shrimp mousse ravioli, and the seafood spring roll. I LOVED everything! The service was impeccable - the dishes came in the exact order that we ordered them, and they came out one after another without missing a beat. I hate going to tapas restaurants where they bring everything out at once and you're trying to eat everything before the food gets cold, so this was refreshing. For the food being as good as it was, the restaurant is not uppety or stuffy - the staff was so nice and the atmosphere is casual but chic. Perfect for a date! Pros: Food, Staff, Prices Cons: Outside tables were really casual more

Good deal for high quality meal 9/18/2006

This restaurant is a beacon in the row of Sawtelle eating establishments. All the dishes are served tapas style, with small portions that are more the size of appetizers. Therefore, feel free to order several dishes in order to satisfy one's appetite. Each dish is exquisitely made with unique and flavorful ingredients. I have eaten at this restaurant multiple times and have never been disappointed. The cold seafood crab salad and filet mignon are especially good. The restaurant has daily specials which have always been excellent. This is a fine culinary experience on par with that of Nobu Malibu, at half the price. more

Orris... 8/30/2006

Orris does a fine job presenting itself through the decor and their choice of hardware. The menu is described delectably and the service is rather exceptional. The dishes always have great presentation and the aroma of the restaurant is simply amazing. However, that's about the extent of the restaurant and the impression it made on me. The food is somewhat expensive and the portions aren't very big (if you're with a party of 5 like I was). Maybe I was just really hungry, but it wasn't as fulfilling as I thought it would be. The food tastes good but not for the price. You could find some of the same dishes if not better dishes at other restaurants that I'VE been to for a fraction of the cost. However, the restaurant gets it right when it comes to fusion cuisine. The smells, the flavors, the use of different herbs and spices really comes together in this restaurant. I would go to Orris every now and then :)\r \r Food: 8/10\r Presentation: 9/10\r Service: 9/10\r Seating Time: 9/10\r Overall: 8.7/10 Pros: Great Ambiance, Good Service, Good Food Cons: Parking, Price, Parking..... Inexpensive and Very Interesting French-Japanese Fusion Served Tapas-Style 8/23/2006

Enjoyed a lovely late-night dinner here. We ordered nine different tapas for our party of three, which was more than plenty foods to satisfy our hungry appetites. Several dishes were outstanding including the shrimp ravioli and the ahi tuna tatar. The service was excellent and we were pleasantly surprised on how inexpensive the meal was. The total tab including two glasses and wine and a large Orion Lager came to less than $100 -- what a steal for such tasty fare in a place like Los Angeles. I will definitely recommend it for individuals who enjoy interesting cuisine. If you are among those who expect to load up on Cheesecake Factory-size portions, this place is probably not for you.\r \r Pros: Cuisine, value, great service Cons: Ambience more

Wonderful! 7/31/2006

Impressed with the flavorful dishes. What a variety and great presentation. Loved the arugala salad, lamb chops, filet mignon, and the snapper. Would definitely go back. Great service too! Pros: Great service, flavor Cons: Not enough outdoor seating. more

French Asian Heaven 7/5/2006

Orris' small plates do not dissapoint, unlike many other small plate rest. in Los Angeles. The combination of French/Japanese is a delight to the palate. Try the filet in roqufort butter sauce or the shrimp dumplings in saffron sauce. They are delightful. The staff is super friendly. Arrive early, there's always a wait. There's a cute boutique next door. more

Orris the bestest 5/20/2006

I am almost reluctant to share my thought about this little gem of a restaurant. The food is always interesting, the service delightful, and the bill reasonable. The orange roughy tempura with a tomato tarragon sauce is incredible as is the trio of salmon croquettes. We have never had a bad dish here. I only wish the restaurant were a little more comfortable. We go early on a regular basis and have never had a problem being seated. Order slowly or the food might come a little quickly. Highly recommended. Pros: Fabulous food., Nice wine list., Great service Cons: Not very comfortable more

A Foodie's Paradise 5/4/2006

I love eating ""tapas"" style. It allows you to try a little bit of everything without filling up on one big entree. Chef Shiro's dishes are creative, and so different from any other place not only on Sawtelle, but in town. And for the gourmet quality of what he's putting out, the prices are reasonable. Mussels came in a huge bowl last week for around $9...I've paid $9 for only 5 or 6 mussels at AOC or Ciudad. Everyone talks about the ravioli which is outstanding...but try the Wonton dessert....wow! Pros: creative dishes more

Orris-couldn't get much better. 4/23/2006

Terrific food (especially crab salad in Avocado and Black Bass), at prices below what I would expect for food of this quality. Our server was friendly and knowledgable. For two people we had two beers a carafe of premium sake and about 6-7 plates for around $125 (including tip). I would have happily spent more. This is a tremendous value for the creative plates and service. Pros: Outstanding food, Friendly service Cons: Small dining room, Limited wine list, No hard alcohol more

A place to visit only once in a while 4/20/2006

My b/friend and I visited this restaurant during a weeknight. Our bill came out to $115. We had 3 glasses of wine and probably ordered 6 dishes. Portions are really small, food was a 7 out of 10. I wouldn't go back anytime soon but I was glad I tried it. Too pricy for me for the quality of food. Pros: good reisling wine, shrimp ravioli Cons: overpriced, quality more

Great food, but beware... 4/13/2006

Great food-- try the grilled romaine hearts, yum! -- but beware... the tapas-style portions are a bit small, so while the food is great, you'll definitely want to order more dishes... and that can add up. Even so, I rate this place very highly so enjoy!!! Pros: Great food, Good staff, Nice ambience Cons: Small portions, Can get pricey more
