Best

My boyfriend and I have been coming here for years. It's where I first learned how to use chopsticks! They gave me ""training"" ones my first visit! LOL!

Worst

My husband and I went here b/c of the great reviews. We love sushi, but have not been able to find a good place since we moved here. We both ordered rolls, I ordered spicy tuna ...

Set the bar REALLY high! 10/14/2011

Best place ever! 2/20/2010

I have been going to Origami for over 2 years now, almost weekly. I am always more than satisfied with the service, the food and the atmosphere. When you eat at a traditional Japanese rest. you need to have patience. This is not fast food- if you want that- there is a McD's in the parking lot. If they are busy- be prepared to wait for your food like an adult- as it is all made fresh, by hand and in the order the tickets are submitted. Only an idiot would run into a real restaurant starving and expect to be served their food in 10 minutes. Some items take longer to prepare, and they bring items as they are ready, as is proper. The food is always delicious, and very fresh. I have eaten there over 100 times at this point, so obviously I think it is great. The prices are lower than most sushi and Japanese places in the Austin area, and I am so happy to say that when I order a vegetarian roll- it does not taste like fish. (Unfortunately I have been to many other sushi places that do not understand that cross-contamination is a bad thing. ) I have always enjoyed every bite at Origami! They keep the place very clean, and the staff does their very best to keep up with all of the tables. They are usually pretty busy, and always get everyone what they need as soon as possible. By far this is one of the top 5 restaurants I have eaten at in my life. Pros: great food, huge portions, always delicious more

Best Sushi in Austin Area 2/8/2010

I've been eating here for the last 6 years and the quality of the food has always been excellent. Whether it's from the kitchen or the sushi bar, it is regularly better than other sushi bars like Musashino and Uchi. I see other reviewers complaining about the serving size/price or an automatic tip. I've eaten at many sushi bars all over the Austin area as well as other states. The prices at Origami have always been quite reasonable, and the serving portions the same as just about every other place I've been to, larger than most in fact. With regard to the automatic tip poilcy. There may be one for large parties, but I'd say 99% of the places I've eaten say ""Automatic gratuity on parties of 6 or larger."" If that's the case here I wouldn't be shocked as some other people seem to be. In short, go there, tell em Jonny sent you and say hi if I'm there, It's a good bet I will be, it's just that good. Pros: Quality of the Fish, Price, Atmosphere Cons: It's not open 24/7. more

Best Sushi in Round Rock 10/24/2009

Dont let the strip mall location turn you off, this is one of the best sushi restaurants in the Austin area. I have eaten here many times over the last few years and rarely have I not been happy with the experience. The sushi is fresh and the decor is very warm. Seating at the bar, regular tables or on the floor if you want the traditional feel. Good selection of rolls if thats your thing. For those that want cheap, try going for lunch. Pros: Quality, Selection, Decor, Lunch Deals Cons: Price (where can you get good cheap sushi?, nowhere) more

this is the real thing, go here! 8/13/2008

recently told to check out this place in (of all places) round rock. this is THE BEST SUSHI outside of sticking your face in the ocean. i travel to japan frequently for business and can say this place must have smuggled back some talent. they have people who actually speak japanese and know the food! i found the prices were comparable to others in austin. the service was good and very friendly. went to another place last week called beluga just to see if this round rock thing was a fluke...goto origami. Pros: best sushi in austin area Cons: in round rock more

Go to Beluga instead 6/10/2008

Overpriced and the service is terrible! I've been twice and each time my husband got his food about 15 minutes before I got mine. The waitresses completely ignored us. They didn't even bring us water for about 5 minutes (we had to remind her 3 times). The sushi is just OK but not worth how long you have to wait for it. more

Hypocrisy at its finest 6/10/2008

It seems ironic to me that they they charge an automatic 15%-20% tip to every table. Pros: I hear the sushi is decent Cons: The owner and chef don't feel it is necessary to leave a good tip when they go out to eat, but when you eat at their restaurant you are forced to tip according the their standards. more

Going Down Hill Fast... 5/23/2008

I used to love this place and the owners, but they seem to have forgotten that it is loyal customers who pay for them to be in business. Pros: The food is tasty Cons: Small Portions, Horrible Customer Service, Automated tipping policy set at an unreasonable rate and condition (4 adults or more) more

good food but poor service 5/22/2008

this place has Japanese owner and I am Japanese, I used to love the place until recently I went there and they wrote tip themself and another time, last time I go there, we were enjoying our conversation with friends who usually don't go out much, we had lot to talk about...and then they could say something but large group came in and they wanted to kick us out...so they brought check and service stopped and I could hear what they are saying and understanding since I am Japanese..owner looked at me like why are you here still...and that was really rude...and I had to say to my dear friends that they are trying to kick us out by looking at me and no more service...so I had it with that restaurant...I rather go to Tokyo Stake House as that matter...they have much well mannered people work there...!!!!!!!! Pros: good sushi Cons: poor service more

Excellent Sushi in Round Rock 2/28/2008

Great atmosphere, authentic Japanese hospitality, delicious food, reasonable prices. more

Best sushi in Austin area!! 12/7/2007

My husband (then boyfriends) took me to Origami for our first valentines day and my first sushi experience. I was in love with sushi from then on out, and though I have had tons of sushi elsewhere, we keep coming back to Origami for the best sushi either of us has ever had. Beautiful interior. more

Pricey, not worth it 10/1/2007

I have been wanting to try Origami for the longest time. The restaurant was nicely decorated and neat. Coming from San Francisco, I compared the food. The servings are small and it was very expensive. They even charge for miso soup. I would not go back even if I am craving for Japanese food. It is totally not worth it. Pros: great service, nice place Cons: food is TOO expensive and not a lot of servings more

Best sushi and japanese food in the us!!! 9/17/2007

I am Japanese. I moved here last year and have been looking for the good sushi that i ve eaten in Japan. Pros: Parking, with kids, Service, Zashiki style more

Overpriced ans small portions 7/5/2007

My husband and I went here b/c of the great reviews. We love sushi, but have not been able to find a good place since we moved here. We both ordered rolls, I ordered spicy tuna with rice around the outside. Usually just one roll is enough for me, but these were so small, about the size around of a quarter, I was so hungry afterwards! Price was very high for what we got. We will not be going back. more

BEST Sushi - we miss it now that we've moved!! 5/21/2007

We moved to Montana back in 2005, and one of the things we miss the most about Austin/Round Rock is Origami. We'll be coming back to town for a visit in June, and that's the one place we HAVE to eat!! There is no other Sushi restaurant in town that can compare for the food or the price. Keep up the great work so we always have a great place to eat when we come back to town! more

Excellent Sushi, great customer service! 11/10/2006

This place has a great variety of Sushi and Sashimi, excellent combo platters and wonderful service. Convenient location and nice atmosphere make this a frequent destination of mine. Pros: Delicious! Great variety. Cons: Just a tad on the pricey side but worth it. more

Great Japanese food taken straight from the country itself! 7/12/2006

Origami is top of the line when it comes to Japanese food. After spending four years in Yokosuka Japan, coming here brings back the wonderful culture and food of such a beautiful country! Besides their awesome sushi, they have a variety of other Japanese food that you should try because its just a great! Pros: Great Food & Great Staff Cons: N/A more

Favorite sushi place in the area 6/14/2006

This is my favorite sushi restaurant in the area. It is a great place for a date and even for large groups for birthdays. The service is great and the sushi even better!!! I cannot say enough good things about Origami. The food is great and it is reasonably priced compared to some other places in town. more

NOT recommended 5/23/2006

This was close to the worst sushi experience I have ever had. The sushi chef seemed overwhelmed with only three tables and me at the sushi bar. The chef had an extremely novice helper. Neither chef nor assistant were Japanese or even Asian, for that matter. The fish was average, but the sushi rice was well below average. I ordered the spicy tuna roll with rice on the outside, and it was prepared with the nori on the outside instead. The foot odor from the patrons seated at the table area permeated the entire restaurant - not an appetizing intrusion. Very disappointing, Origami. Pros: not crowded Cons: poor quality food, bad ambiance, poor chef knowledge more

really good sushi 3/13/2006

All we had was green tea, miso soup, and a big platter of sushi. It was all good. The sushi was fresh and delicious. The service was friendly. The place was quiet and pleasant. more
