Sum Terrific Dim Sum for Lunch 9/19/2006

If you like Dim Sum, or would like to try Dim Sum, I recommend lunch at The New Kowloon. You'll see the name on a big white building on Jackson St. just east of the I-5 freeway overpasses. For starters, there's a huge parking garage in their building and it's FREE. This makes it very easy to blast over there for lunch, park, stuff your face and blast back to work for a good nap. The dining room is nothing special, but the constant parade of carts past your table offer a vast selection of shrimp, pork, duck, beef, and vegetable dishes prepared in ways both familiar and exotic. Steamed, fried, boiled, baked, etc. Average price per dish is around $2-3.50 and everything tastes freshly prepared and scrumptious. (Have not been there for dinner so I don't know if these prices hold true in the evening.) Dim Sum is a Cantonese term, literally translated as dot heart or order heart, meaning order to one's heart's content. It consists of a wide spectrum of choices, from sweet to salty. It has combinations of meat, vegetables, seafood, and fruit. It is usually served in a small basket or on a small dish, depending on the type of dim sum. If you're looking for great dim sum... 12/25/2005

New Kowloon on 9th and Jackson is my absolute favorite. The selection is huge and everything is super fresh, plus most things are steamed so it's not too greasy. My favorites include the BBQ humbow, shrimp dumplings, and the fried sesame ball with red bean paste. Another big plus about New Kowloon is that it's super cheap! Only one warning--to get the best selection and service you need to go between 11-1:30. They serve dim sum from 10-3, but if you go too early not everything is ready, and if you're too late the staff is already eating their lunch so it's hard to get served. more

Amazing Dim Sum 9/25/2005

We have been systematically trying to find the best Dim Sum and we found a really good one today. This place had all of the standards plus some really interesting (not in a scary way) new things to try. There is an emphasis on seafood but there was a ton of choices. We love dim sum because, with a two year old, there is never a wait for your order. We got there a bit on the early side (10:00) and would probably go later next time since most of the best stuff comes once more people are there. I would shoot for 11:00. This place is HUGE so you won't have to wait AND there is parking a big garage so you don't have to deal with the International District's parking issues. more
